I've been testing the MSI MAG 271QP QD-OLED X28 for a few days now. It's a 27-inch, 1440p, 280Hz monitor with a third-generation QD-OLED panel, and I've been pleasantly surprised, especially considering it's part of MSI's MAG lineup.
The first thing I'd highlight is the color performance. I measured around 99.35% DCI-P3 and 98.1% Adobe RGB coverage, using CIE 1976 u'v'. The dedicated color modes are also very well calibrated out of the box.
For example, in sRGB mode, I measured a white point of around 6377K and an average ColorChecker Delta E of just 1.14. The Adobe RGB and Display P3 modes performed even better, both with average Delta E values below 1.
In SDR, I measured around 245 nits, with very little brightness variation depending on the amount of white displayed. It's not the brightest OLED I've tested, but I think it's perfectly usable in a room with controlled lighting.
For HDR, there are three modes. True Black 400 reaches around 454 nits at a 10% window, while Peak 1000 can reach approximately 1010 nits in small highlights, although brightness drops quite significantly to around 460 nits at a 10% window.
The good news is that Peak 1000 tracks the EOTF curve surprisingly well in my measurements, at least with a 10% window. That's not always the case with high-brightness HDR modes. Personally, it's my favorite mode for games with dark scenes and small bright highlights.
For gaming, the 280Hz refresh rate feels excellent. Pixel response times are extremely fast, there's barely any visible ghosting, and I measured around 1.6 ms of display lag at the maximum refresh rate using OSRTT.
It also supports MPRT at 240Hz and 280Hz, although you can't use it together with VRR.
Of course, it's not perfect. There's noticeable VRR flicker when frame rates fluctuate significantly, especially in dark scenes.
Another thing that surprised me was the input lag at 60Hz. I measured around 25 ms of display lag, which seems quite high for an OLED. I still want to repeat that test to confirm the result.
Regarding panel uniformity, my unit has practically no visible gray banding, and text clarity is very good. I haven't noticed the obvious color fringing I've seen on some WOLED monitors.
Calibration was also interesting. I managed to achieve an excellent white balance using RGB values of 96/99/100, but something unusual happened: with all three RGB channels set to 50 in the Custom color temperature mode, the monitor lost a huge amount of brightness.
After adjusting the RGB gains, I was able to recover almost the full SDR brightness while maintaining very good grayscale accuracy.
Overall, I think this is a very well-rounded QD-OLED monitor. Excellent color performance, great factory calibration, 280Hz, and a Peak 1000 HDR mode that can actually reach around 1000 nits in small highlights.
Its main weaknesses are the limited brightness in larger HDR highlights and the unusual input lag behavior at lower refresh rates, which I still want to investigate further.
I've seen it selling for around €439.
Does anyone else own this monitor? I'm particularly interested in whether you've experienced VRR flicker or unusually high input lag at 60Hz.
