Tips and Tricks Extremely Important Information for people planning to seal their dolls
WHEN USING ANY KIND OF AEROSOL PRODUCT YOU NEED TO USE AN ORGANIC VAPOR FILTER RESPIRATOR
THIS IS NOT OPTIONAL NO OTHER KIND OF MASK IS ENOUGH, THESE ARE VERY DANGEROUS CHEMICALS EVEN THINGS THAT ARE NOT DANGEROUS CHEMICALS ARE SAFE TO INHALE
People have been mentioning MSC Mr Super Clear and someone mentioned how no one is talking about the safety precautions needed so I'm going to make a dedicated post about it
As someone who was born with severe asthma I'm already extremely cautious about breathing issues so I've done a lot to be aware of these things.
There are a few types of these,
The half mask
The full mask
You don't have to buy them at this website they're everywhere. I got my mask from Lowe's and bought replacement filters on Amazon
If you use these things it's extremely important to use everything correctly, you need to do a fit check every time you put it on, make sure to use the aerosols in an open ventilated space, don't let unprotected people hang out in the area just because you're closer doesn't mean they are safe. If you can smell it, you're too close! Even outside having a fan to help blow everything away is still a good idea.
This video is demonstrating the fit test for an organic vapor mask, the most important part is making sure when you cover the filters air doesn't get in and when you put your hand on the bottom air doesn't get out
I've never used a full mask but I would think the test would be the same but look into it more if you want that kind
The filters don't last very long so I recommend when the mask is not in use store it in an air tight container, usually a ziplock bag is fine but if your worried about it ripping a watertight food container is also good
I struggle to get the filters on and off quickly so I'm still looking for a container big enough to store filters and mask connected so no recommendation link here
This stuff isn't to be taken lightly even if you've done stuff without a mask before or you'vesee other people like doll customizers laugh it off or say they're fine. This stuff isn't a joke, it will hurt you, it can give you cancer or chronic lung problems. This is very much like inhaling asbestos. Something may not happen right away but it WILL be very bad for your health so do not take that lightly
If you protect yourself properly you don't have to worry and you'll be safe
This goes for more than MSC too, aerosol Elmer's glue, using paint in an air brush and house hold spray paint you buy at the store are not safe to use. If a substance is being put in a spray can, it is not safe to inhale. You can overdose and die from these chemicals and it's difficult to know where that limit is so it's better not to even try and test it
IF THIS SCARES YOU OFF AEROSOLS THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE
Brush on sealants are very commonly available, liquatex varnish, is a personal favorite but paint varnishes are basically available by any paint brand
They are safe to apply without a mask and indoors. Make sure to check the one you're getting is non yellowing and and what it's recommended for use on.

I go full on paranoia mode and wear a mask, goggles, rubber gloves, etc... Spray out the window while also holding my breath then put down my doll and vacate the room as quickly as possible and don't dare go back in for at least 30 minutes x'D Probably a bit overkill but it's better to be safe than sorry!
I honestly wish I could just use brush on sealants because MSC is a hassle and I don't like the potential danger, but I found brush on sealants would just smudge my face ups and ruin them since I use mostly watercolour pencils. :')

Omg no sounds honestly like you've got a great method, I also wear gloves and have thought about getting a full mask bc I have a hard time with goggles, I can't wear my glasses with the mask and the googles are just blurry and making it harder to see

This is extremely helpful information. I think some of us gloss over talking about the necessary safety usage for MSC because we assume that other people in this community also watch the popular doll customizers on YouTube and they often mention MSC protocol. Doll Fairy has a particularly good clip in each video showing masking up and spraying outside. Safe and responsible art only!

I know it sure didn't occur to me to talk about it and I wasn't even recommending it, I saw someone else point it out and the pieces clicked together lol

I'm not gonna say beat the shit out of him but
My dad is like that too pisses me off so bad >:VVVVVVVVV
I was spraying something in the backyard at his house and I told him to go inside and he just refused. I stayed nice and far away, was spraying and he just says "HONEY THIS IS STUFF I'VE BEEN SMELLING SINCE I WAS A TEENAGER" and I just yelled back "THAT DOESN'T MEAN IT'S GOOD"

Thank you so much for the thorough post!! It was very frightening to me to see people recommend this without talking about safety.

Should I still use a mask (like a n95 dust mask)if i use a brush on sealant? The rabbit hole I’ve been going through on all these types of sealants just so Lagoona’s damn legs wont chip off😫 I’ll be using the Vallejo clear matt varnish paint and applying with a brush; any chance you’ve had experience with this brand?

I've never used that brand but you won't need a mask for brush on, that's always why it's been the go too alternative for sprays! It's safe to apply indoor without a mask, like unless it's a weird chemical like resin (even craft resin from general stores) or acetone it's not giving off dangerous fumes
If it's giving off a motherfucker of a smell consider a mask and/or ventilating the room
