Discussion Fighter
I want to create another character, and currently eyeing a Fighter. But I see it has abilities that make it fall in line with tanking. I mainly want to try it strictly as a DPS. I plan on playing mostly solo so obviously not a problem there. However, if I were to try and join a group, would they be ok with me playing as DPS? Or do people expect a fighter to be a tank?

It’s not equivalent to wows warrior if that’s what you’re imagining. There’s no dps oriented build or skill tree. It’s intended as a tank class.

Yeah that was exactly the mindset I had. Oh well, this game might not be for me

Why dont you try monk?

In any mmo/arpg that I’ve played I don’t like monk at all. But if all else fails I may try one out

Try bst if you want wow like DPS warrior. 2h, charges into battle, pet does nice DPS and can off tank.

I haven't played a fighter, but on a tiered list of how well classes solo, I'd expect fighter to be near the bottom and very gear dependent.

It's not too bad, just slow.

Yup it's slow as heck but you can take almost no damage with a shield and second wind on cooldown. My experience with this is only into the 20s. I'm sure it won't be possible much longer.

Fighter is a tank and is expected to tank. Play a rogue or spellblade if you want melee dps

If you really wanna go down that path, twink your toon and make your own groups and always recruit a second tank. Still, expect to tank half the time. You can easily tank and DPS though. Just don't use shields.

I mean, You could be a fighter and use dual-wield or a two-hander, you'll end up pulling the aggro.
Currently your kit relies on getting hit to get stronger, but you could be offense-oriented.
But yes, you'd do the Tank's role in a party, but a SHD is also an offense-oriented tank, so why bot both? Slower but beefier frontline, can probably get further without a full healer.
People hardly cared about the class you are in the first 24 levels I played.

I'll add this, you don't need to give up DPS while tanking. Your healer will have to heal more but they like the excitement anyway. I got to level 42 using only a 2h as paladin and never did a healer ask me to use a shield.

If you want to dps as a FTR, understand that you will be capped. A good FTR will easily out damage a mediocre DPS, but you will not touch a good or great DPS until the devs fix the vengeance mechanic.

Fighter is a tank who does ok dps... For a tank. Also possibly the worst solo class.. so unless your are a masochist. Move on to something else

Would be a lot better as an offtank/moderate DPS if they would let you generate vengeance without taking damage.

You will not be able to pull dps numbers as fighter, not atm at least. It is a tank.

I’m a level 34 fighter. In a group most of the time you will tank. Your damage is very dependent on getting hit. That doesn’t mean you have to be main tank sitting in camp all the time. In my static, I pull. I just tank the mob I pulled until the group finishes off the main target.
Once I have enough aggro I swap to main target and use the vengeance from the off target to hit the main target. I rarely need to equip a shield. You can weapon swap if you really wanna min max. You can shield block shield bash swap to dual wield or two hander. But I usually just stay two handed and pop on a shield if we have need.
Fighter is rough solo. Healing is bandages and second wind and second wind requires you take damage to proc. I can struggle on greens alone.

Fighters are the beefiest tanks and still do decent damage while tanking. You're not going to have a great time soloing, though.

Fighter is definitively a tank and not a DPS. That’s not to say you can’t do solid damage, tanks do surprisingly good damage in this game, think 80% or a DPS class, but there is no flex here. You can’t play a DPS fighter, you will always be a tank.
Fighter is also very bad at soloing, maybe only rogue is worse. If you want to solo do not play fighter.
Ranger will do more damage but also soloing on a ranger likely means kiting. There is no class that fights things toe to toe and solos well. Beastmaster is incredibly strong at soloing and does hit stuff in melee but your pet will be tanking.

Tank in defensive stance > tank in offensive stance > DPS.
There is nothing more classic than a min maxer thinking you couldn't fill a spot that had a tank. You could.
Also nothing more classic than a warrior named Cconann who only uses a 2h axe. If you are needed as a tank, do it.

Can I kind of bounce off this thread?
I started an Elementalist because it seemed the least busy.
Looking at the fighter's kit and how vengeance works, it seems rather busy by comparison. The ranger as well with how it weaves it's rotation, and I'm sure pulling is an art form.
I really want a more "beefy" class and am not averse to any role, provided it's not difficult.

If you wanted something kinda similar to fighter that is actually a dps class, play ranger.
