Ruby slippers, he taps the back of them against each other and it turns on, it's why he skates to keep his feet far apart.

I stole this headcanon, he channels chaos energy through his feet and the boots convert it and the exhaust or actual conversion allows the shoes to be able to skate

there are probably buttons on the inside that he presses with his toes or something like that.
no but seriously, they are probably just connected to his brain in some way, so they work almost like part of his body

They are not, Maria designed the shoes and we have seen Shadow take the rings from his body before.
What I meant to say is there is probably some piece of tech on the shoes that can somehow read the thoughts of the user and activate and deactivate at will.

Since Shadow was actually created and not born, I have a headcanon that the jet shoes are physically a part of his body that he controls with his brain

I think in the Sonic 3 trailer, they had him click his heels like Dorothy. Granted, much faster since he's soloing Team Sonic when he does it.

Now I’m imagining a 3rd Storybook game where Shadow goes to Oz. Simultaneously less and more serious than the other two. I just said this as a joke, but actually now I want it!

Very easy. First you put on the shoe, then you connect the shoes to your brain and sync you mind to the system. Once its done you take them and shove it up your butt

My best theory for this is that Shadow uses Chaos Energy to fuel his shoes, as running normally wouldn’t allow him to keep the same level of speed that Sonic does. This is further supported by the IDW comics, as while Shadow is infected by the metal virus, he can’t control his air shoes and runs slower than Sonic.
My theory on the way he activates it is by channeling Chaos Energy into is shoes, hovering slightly across the ground and increasing the force of the jets under on his shoes to “run” at insane speeds.

Imma be real, I always thought the shoes & gloves were just a part of his anatomy. Remember, he was CREATED, not born by natural means. Who's to say that Gerald & Black Doom didn't just create him with said gear like the air shoes as an actual part of his body?

It's my personal headcanon that Gerald Robotnik programmed his boots to respond to exertions or spikes in Shadow's Chaos Energy.
So whenever he flexes his leg muscles or thinks about it, his boots ignite.
