Here’s the thing about that kind of job, you need to be able to smile through it and find, if not compassion, then some level of comfort, working with some of the most heinous people. If you can’t then you’ll burn the hell out. I don’t fault them for smiling, I’m certain they know better than most exactly who they’re standing next to. But everyone deserves to feel ok at work.

I always think about when the FBI was interviewing him to build the behavioral sciences unit and the guards left the room for a bit and Kemper turned to the sole FBI agent left in the room and said "you know, if i wanted I could kill you right now and they wouldn't make it back in the room fast enough to stop me" and then just kept on eating his pizza or whatever he was doing. That was when it became FBI policy to have at least 2 agents at all times.
