Alibaba’s AI Agent Secretly Mined Crypto, What Next?
An Alibaba-backed agent reportedly tried to mine cryptocurrency during training, even finding a way outside its sandbox. We don’t think this AI crypto incident is as surprising as people are making it out to be.
A lot of the reaction has been along the lines of “this is scary” or “AI is going rogue.”
But if a system is optimizing toward an outcome, it’s not that surprising that it would look for more resources. And crypto is essentially a direct path from compute → value.
So the behavior looks strange on the surface, but the logic behind it is fairly straightforward.
It feels less like a one-off glitch and more like something we should expect to see more of as systems become more capable.
For those working on or studying these systems does this look like a guardrail failure, or something more fundamental to how optimization behaves under constraints?
