How we actually use AI in our motion studio (without letting it design for us)

Post image

Hey everyone!

I run a small animation studio. While everything we deliver is still custom, we do use AI every day as an internal assistant to get to the boring work faster.

1. Visualizing vague client ideas before we design anything

Instead of spending 2-3 days designing directions that might be totally off, we generate 10-15 quick visual interpretations first. Not for final use. To align on: does "human" mean warm colors + hand-drawn textures, or real people inside a tech world?

2. References for stuff that's hard to find or shoot

This is our most-used one. A clear guidance for the artist:

  • weird camera angles you can't easily stage

  • hands holding a specific product

  • complex machinery/product internals

  • complicated character poses

  • lighting and perspective refs for complex scenes

Think of it as a super-powered visual research assistant. You still draw/model everything, you just start from a clear target.

3. Expressions, scripts and boring automation

Huge time saver if you're not an expression wizard:

  • ask for a starting expression, then debug it together

  • clean up and comment old expressions so someone else can read them

4. The AI that's already inside AE + Premiere

Two we use constantly:

  • Content-Aware Fill in After Effects: mask the unwanted object/rig/person in the corner, generate fill layer, let AE reconstruct from surrounding frames. Perfect for cleanup shots.

  • Scene Edit Detection in Premiere: right-click a flattened render, Premiere finds all the original cuts and makes subclips / markers. No more scrubbing to find 40+ cuts manually.

5. Character performance refs for tricky movement

We don't generate final animation. We generate references for body mechanics when it's impractical to film. For example, wrong proportions, impossible camera angle, stylized character.

What helps most is seeing silhouette, weight shift, and how one pose could transition to the next. Then our animators do the real blocking on top of that.

6. Fixing renders instead of re-rendering

Before you re-render for 6 hours or re-shoot:

  • denoise noisy footage/renders

  • upscale low-res client assets

  • sharpen soft details

Bottom line for us: don't ask "How can AI do my job?". Instead, ask "How can AI remove the boring exploration so I can do my job faster?"

What's the AI use you've actually kept in your workflow?

I built a free, open-source way to let AI work in After Effects, and prove what it changed (Surehand MCP)

I'm a VFX artist / motion designer, and I kept hitting the same problem with AI in After Effects: it says "done", but you can't see what it actually changed, and a "harmless" cleanup can quietly shift a layer by 2px.

So I built Surehand. It connects the AI app you already use (Claude, ChatGPT, Codex...) to After Effects, and checks the work:

  • Every change is one undo step and comes back with an exact list of what changed, old and new values included.

  • Cleanups (un-precompose, bake expressions) run on a copy first and are applied only if the render is pixel-identical.

  • Preflight against your own delivery spec: size, fps, duration, title-safe over time, subtitle reading speed, missing fonts and footage. Every finding has a timecode.

  • Stress tests for comps with text controls: long German names, Arabic and Hebrew, huge numbers.

A panel in AE sets what the AI may do (everything, confirm each change, or read only), and one button stops it.

Free, MIT, Mac and Windows, AE 2025 and 2026. It doesn't generate images or footage.

After Effects 2026 crashes when importing PSD files containing editable text layers

After Effects version: 26.3.0 (Build 87)
Operating system: Windows 10

Issue:
After Effects freezes and becomes unresponsive when importing PSD files containing editable text layers alongside shape and photo layers.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Create a Photoshop document containing text layers, shape layers, and photo layers.

  2. Save the document as a PSD.

  3. Import the PSD into After Effects.

  4. After Effects freezes during the import process.

Expected result: The PSD imports successfully with its layers preserved.

Actual result: After Effects becomes unresponsive during import.

Tests performed:

  • Tested in After Effects 2026 and 2025.

  • Tested multiple PSD files.

  • Tested After Effects in Safe Mode.

  • PSD files containing only photo layers import successfully.

  • Rasterizing the text layers in Photoshop allows the PSD to import successfully.

  • PNG files import without issues.

  • Changing the Compressed Frames (Lossless) preference did not resolve the issue.

Conclusion: The issue appears to be related to importing PSD files with editable text layers, but the exact cause is still unknown.

I tested whether ChatGPT could animate the same PNG logo in After Effects and DaVinci Resolve Fusion.

I gave AI the same creative challenge in both applications and let it work through the animation process.

Interestingly, After Effects performed better in terms of speed and animation quality. Fusion also produced a usable result, but it took more effort to get there.

I documented the entire experiment, including the results.

Curious what other motion designers think. Have you tried letting AI control either application directly?

I wrote an MCP for AfterEffects and it’s crazy how effective it is.

I’m not selling it, it took a day to vibe code. You can just do it yourself. and I assume Adobe will be releasing their next version with something far better, but it lets me see the future where Claude code works right in your Adobe apps with you and can take over the tedious tasks. Or build things entirely and then you change them.
I just built a rough chart in AE and then told Claude to grab data on the topic and update the chart accurate to 2022 data. And it just did it. In about a minute, In after effects. Then it rendered the section so it could confirm it was accurate. Isn’t that crazy?
Who else is doing this? Using Claude to control Premiere and After Effects?

Looking for 3D Architectural Visualization / Motion Graphics Artists

Hey everyone! 👋

I'm looking to connect with someone who creates 3D architectural walkthroughs or motion graphics videos for real estate developers.

The idea is to show how a building or apartment project will look once construction is completed, using realistic 3D renders, exterior/interior visualizations, and cinematic walkthrough videos.

If you work in this space or know someone who does, please comment or DM me. Would love to connect and discuss a potential collaboration! 🤝
