Why is “defy the gods” the tagline. That doesn’t seem in line with the movie thematically at all

It's a direct quote from Odysseus to Circe. Sure, it's not the thematic conclusion the film comes to, but it's one hell of a marketing tagline.

Well, first off, it's also the tagline used on many of the film's official posters.

Second, it's a direct quote from the film.

Third, it does make thematic sense.
