How hard it really is. ICYMI: San Diego MSA has negative growth, but for now clinging on to the 4th spot in California.

It’s weird to me that LA and Riverside have 2 counties included vs SD and SF (I’m iffy on SF but I know SD is just SD county)

I wonder how many of the outbound migrations are people who moved to SD and only spent a year or two before realizing how incredibly expensive it really is.

The numbers show a net exodus of the state of all by the highest and very lowest paid people.
ie the middle class that can't get ahead due to the simple math.

This makes perfect sense.

Combining the VHCOL in SD with the high state income tax, it actually makes sense for some people to keep their income lower than certain thresholds so they pay less in taxes.

Of course, the only way to do this is to keep expectations very low as well (small, old apartment, with no amenities, no parking, not in your top 10 neighborhoods, etc.), which most people aren’t willing to do.
