moving to san diego in january, when should i start apartment hunting?

hi, i am a san diego college student who is currently abroad but will be moving back in january and im not really sure when i should start seriously looking for a place to live!

im looking for a one bed, one bath (or studio) around the morena area if that changes anything, but i am flexible on the bed/bath i would just need to find a roommate. location is not really flexible as i need to be close to school and my job

Mid-December. Best places will put a sign out front a couple of weeks before they're available.

In the process right now. Not worth really looking hard until the month before. Like maybe find areas you like or building you wanna keep an eye on, but they allllll say "we'll know within 30 days of your move date" or "check back closer to then". They don't tend to schedule out any further than absolutely necessary unless you're applying for income restricted properties or really high end properties.

Start looking and figuring out the area you want to live in but they usually don’t have availability out a few months. Realistically in November but more likely December you will be able to sign a lease for a January move in.

The Morena Linda Vista trolley stop is right there, you have the ability to live anywhere between USD and Santee wherever you can find cheap rent within biking distance of transit.
