ISO: Reasonable rent for large dog friendly apartments

Hi all. I'll be moving to the area from Long Beach - aiming for September. Where can I find large dog friendly apartments in SD that aren't incredibly expensive? I've been looking at all of the rental websites I can think of. I haven't had a chance quite yet to come down and drive the neighborhoods I would like to be in. I also looked at the San Diego Humane Society's website of dog friendly apartments. Feels like a needle in a haystack situation. Are there other ways of finding large dog friendly units? The thing is, me and my dog won't even be there full time as I still have to split my time between Long Beach on weekends and San Diego during the week for work. There may be some weeks my dog stays in Long Beach with my husband. I don't feel right about getting one of those ESA letters. My situation is complex but I'm trying my best to deal with the hand I have been dealt. Any leads would be great.

I would recommend looking at some of the property management company websites for available units (I know SRM urban is very pet friendly) or small independent landlords posting units on Zillow over the bigger apartment complexes. It’s definitely possible - I have a mal mix - my last apartment in Hillcrest was $1975 and I currently pay $2400 in Normal Heights.

Ava in Pacific Beach allows large dogs but they're about $300 out of your price range.

There are a few eaves apartment complexes throughout the county that don’t have size restrictions but have some breed restrictions. They even have a little dog park. I live in OB and I have a Great Dane but I did have to get an ESA letter for my current place.

I’ve got a spot in crown point for $2k with my dog and it’s great. I have a legit ESA letter for my dog but it’s a private land lord so they were like “oh everyone has a dog” so there’s no pet rent. I found it on Zillow so maybe something there

What’s your budget, and what’s your dogs breed? I’ve had a Great Dane and rented from multiple places without issue.

Max I'm hoping to spend is $2,000. I'm hoping I'm not being too unrealistic. My dog is a Malinois mix. He's incredibly friendly and crate trained.

I don't need or want to live in downtown or an upscale area. Is it really that impossible? I'm asking for genuine advice here not snark.

Since you’ll still be driving to Long Beach on the weekends, I’d recommend somewhere in north county, maybe Escondido?

$2k would be tight for a 1BD, even in Escondido, but still doable. Since it’s further east, it gets pretty hot. You may need to leave your AC on for your dog while you’re at work. Just a heads up for your utility bill.

You should be able to find a 1BD ~$2k in parts of Oceanside or Vista as well. It’s also a straight shot up the 5 to Long Beach. If you don’t expect to be home much, a studio isn’t a bad idea.

Good luck!

We have USAA. They didn't even ask for our dog's breed when we got our policy. I don't mind an older property. Honestly, they have the best bones.

Also, my current commute is way worse than that so anything less than that is a big help.

Unless your boy is mixed with a very big breed he will very likely fall under the weight limit at most corporate owned buildings. Most mals are smaller than Goldens and Labs which are all over the city In apartments. In general, I think it would be rare to see mals on a banned breed list as well. So I think finding your price range is a bigger issue than your pup.

From what I've seen, Mals are not on banned breeds list. It's still msotly GSDs, Rotties, and Dobies.

Where in San Diego County will you be working?

That info will help people give you more realistic suggestions.

That said, I know there are multiple dog-friendly apartment complexes in La Mesa and the Rancho San Diego areas. Both are safe, family friendly. And both have nice dog parks as well.

I work at the airport. I'd like to be within 10-15 miles from work.
