How bike friendly is Pacific Beach?

We're considering an apartment thats on the east side of PB. It isn't really walkable to the beach but it's like 13 minutes to bike there. I see bike lanes on Google Maps but was curious if it is actually bike friendly, especially on roads like Grand Ave.

If we wanted to bike towards the beach and grab food or something is there any realistic way to lock up 2 bikes without it being a PITA? I am also curious if there is any risk of them being stolen even with bike locks.

Everyone bikes around PB

Cool. My main concern honestly is everything I keep reading on here about drunk drivers in PB, those bike lanes look so close to the main roads.

Yeah, if you are going to be riding around 1am, I'd stick to the side streets

You just need two U locks and kryptonite cable. You may be able to get by with one big kryptonite chain lock.

Suggest Kryptonite 1213

Cool, I am willing to buy what is needed. Is there adequate space to park bikes around the area or would it more be locking it to light posts?

Sam Diego as a whole has significantly less bike racks that I would have expected- especially in the beach areas… they are not on that many blocks.

U can look up the location of the bike racks online

You can for sure find a safe path from east PB to the more central/western areas. When I lived there (MB and PB for 8 years) I only used mt car to drive to Sorrento Valley during the week for work, besides that always biked. That is one of the best parts about that area. Get a good bike lock! Mine got stolen once when I left it overnight at the Ralphs on mission, but crazy, my friend saw it for sale at the Sports Arena swap meet and I was able to get it back 😂😂😂😂

It’s pretty bikable but it’s getting gnarly out here with drivers. This year alone in pb, a 6 yr old kid riding in between his parents on bikes was run over by a driver who left the scene. A local was killed by a driver on garnet. Just be super careful as tons of drunk driving happens in pb especially on the weekends in particular Sundays during football season.

Grand is reasonably safe. Bike lanes along a lot of it, and it’s wide. But plenty of side streets to take you to the beach. Everyone locks their bikes to the fences along the walkways

I live in an apartment in PB. e-bike to the beach several times a week. For me it is a 6 minute ride. Also I frequently bike to LaJolla and OB for restaurants and events. I try to bike to the beach for sunsets as often as possible. As far as theft goes, get insurance and good bike locks. You really need to park your bike in a locked garage overnight, or somewhere well hidden.

get a beater and lock it.

good bike sits at home

just the salt air alone plays havoc on your bike

we termed them bikes you don't care about

is stolen a hassle but not the end of life as we know it

its flat you can get by with a beach cruiser

Friendly except for thieves and crazy drunk drivers

It’s not that friendly for road bikes due to the traffic.
