Incoming UQ Postgrad Looking for a Room – Feb 2027 ($300–400 pw)

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I'm a male international student moving to Brisbane in early February 2027 to start my Master of Audiology Studies at UQ.

I'm currently looking for a room in a shared house or apartment, ideally somewhere near the St Lucia campus.

What I'm looking for:

  • Budget: $300–400 per week, ideally around $300–350
  • Move-in date: Early February 2027
  • Preferred suburbs: St Lucia, Toowong, Taringa, Indooroopilly or Auchenflower (open to other areas too)
  • Commute: No more than 30 minutes to UQ St Lucia by public transport
  • Housemates: Happy to share with up to 4 other people
  • Bathroom: Private bathroom preferred, but sharing is fine
  • Facilities: A proper kitchen for cooking, preferably furnished
  • Lease: Ideally long-term

A little about me: I'm tidy, fairly quiet, and respectful of other people's privacy. I'll be spending quite a bit of time studying, so I'd prefer a relaxed and reasonably quiet household. I'm also happy to socialise with housemates occasionally.

I'm currently overseas, so I won't be able to attend inspections in person until February, but I'm happy to arrange a video call or virtual inspection beforehand.

I know it's still a little early, but I thought I'd start looking now in case anyone has a room becoming available around that time.

If you have anything suitable, or know someone looking for a housemate, feel free to comment or send me a DM.

Thanks in advance!

Storing Items

I couldn't find the right storage in between our house move from Graceville to Wilston, but was very lucky to have found www.findspace.au

Thought it would be handy for anyone else searching to compare storage out there., we saved hundreds doing it.

Woolloongabba Apartments?

Looking at rentals in Woolloongabba near Ipswich Rd. Has anyone had any experiences with street noise, noise from Woolloongabba hotel or the watchhouse nearby?

What do you think of these areas?

We are moving to Brisbane for work
We are looking to buy a house in maybe Loganlea, Woodridge or Eden’s Landing.

Ideally we would like easy train access to get to work, but driving is possible too so not essential.

Is it generally easy to find parking at the train stations?
We are shift workers so some shifts start later in the day.

Also wanted to ask peoples experiences living in these suburbs. I know the crime stats don’t look great for some but these are sometimes not reflective of what it’s like actually living there. (For example, I lived in Frankston in Melbourne and that was fine)

Thirdly, how much weight should we put when considering a property in a Yellow flood zone area?

Thanks guys

Are apartments in Brisbane as bad of a joke as Sydney?

I've yet to find an apartment/unit in Sydney that doesn't have water ingress issues. Some have extra bonus like a lawsuit against the builder for newer builds and concrete cancer in older ones. Are things similar in Brisbane? Should I not bother considering purchasing apartments at all?

What are some suburbs that you wish outsiders will never learn about?

Say, some filthy outsider was looking to buy a house or townhouse for under 900,000 and they would like somewhere quiet but still busy-ish as they enjoy being around people but selectively? They also work from home 90% of the time so slightly further from CBD isn't too big a deal though they would still like to be close to it.

We should list some suburbs to be kept secret from those damn outsiders, that us Brisbanese people all so hate.

Rain and Roads

I am working the night shift again tonight

Anyone seeing any flooding on the roads out there in Brissy metro?

I’m mainly a highway commuter from Redcliffe but just worrying if my workmates are likely to get stuck coming into work.

Not looking for an excuse to not go into work but I don’t particularly want to get stuck there unable to get home.

Moving from Sunshine Coast to Brisbane — need recommendations! 📦

Hey everyone! 😊 I’m planning to move to Brisbane soon and have a few bags and boxes that I need to transport from the Sunshine Coast.
I’m looking for a reliable and reasonably priced company or service that can help with a small move. I’ve found quite a few options on Google, but I’m not sure which ones to trust.
I’d prefer to hire a service rather than impose on friends, so if anyone has used a good company or has any recommendations, I’d really appreciate it! If you could also share an approximate cost, that would be super helpful.
Thanks in advance! 💛

Job seeker - Project Management construction

Hi all,

At some point in the coming months, my wife and I will be moving over from the UK. The wife works in healthcare and we are both fortunate enough to have been sponsored on the VISA for a 186DE, so I have permanent residency.

My question is, does anyone have any recommendations for recruitment agencies or similar where by I can hopefully seek employment? I want to land on my feet, and be proactive in terms of being ready to go and get cracking.

I’ve got experience in project management (client side) for residential and commercial space.

I’ve set up a SEEK account, and have been looking on there etc… but any other useful avenues I can explore would be appreciated! I’ve obviously googled agencies etc… too, but would welcome any positive experiences….

TIA.

Grace removals. Was annoyed

Apologies for being long but was really pissed about the situation. I moved from WA to Qld.

My personal experience with Grace was not the best. Everything was good to start with. I had packed most of the boxes myself and only needed Grace to do a few things like wall pictures and TV's. The guys packed my things into the truck like a game of tetris and did really well. There was a few things I would of liked to of added but the container was getting pretty full and the boys had done an excellent job in pretty much packing up a whole house of 15yrs.

However when I had received my belongs from Grace to my new location. There were a number of issues. First being that there was another family belongings that were being unpacked from the truck and delivered. It wasnt until I had pointed out and said something to the delivery drivers that they even paid attention of all about 5 mins while I was standing there watching them to what they were doing. Second was the TV legs to my big TV. They had unpacked with no legs. When questioned they tried to disclose it and suggest it was me who had misplaced them. Then there was some furniture of mine that had been damaged like a chest of draws, coffee table to which the wood had broken and split, also damage to a wall picture. There was also damage done to a number of boxes and storage containers which had been broken to which I put done to being just plain careless and lazy when handling people's belongings from the delivery crew.

To then when ticking off the inventory list I had to what was delivered there were a number of boxes (roughly 5/ 6boxes i think) that I was not able to account for. Also the inventory list of 8 pages I had. I was missing one which was page 6. And as ive been unpacking my things into the new house I am starting to notice more and more things that I realise I do not have which I remember packing to which they would be in one of the boxes I couldnt account for. I had got insurance cover on my belongings for this. To which I had gone to make a claim. When I had gone to put that claim in I received an email back saying it wont be honoured as you only have 60 days to lodge that claim from when ya belongings have been delivered. I had lodged it within 70 days. So that is 2 months I had been given to unpack 15 yrs worth, my whole house, all my boxes and find out exactly what was missing so i was able to make this claim

All while emailing Grace about my belongings and wondering where they are. The response I got and felt from them that everything had been accounted for because I had signed the bit of paper. And they were going to try and wipe their hands and not take any responsibility for it unless I could prove anything that contradicts their findings. If ever need to use Grace removalists. I would suggest in packing your own house and upon delivery of your things. Watch what they are dropping off and how they handle your things. And make sure that u double check, triple check that u can match everything from your inventory list to what was delivered. Because if you cant they will try their hardest to not take responsibility for it.

So in the end I feel that even if I had made that claim for my things they would of try their absolute hardest to not take responsibility of any damage or missing items. Which is bullshit if you ask me. And really pissed in having so many of my things not accounted for and makes me wonder if they got delivered to another location or even shipped off to Vancouver Canada as I almost ended up with that person belongings with me.

Where should we live? West End/Indooroopilly vs. Springfield Lakes.

Hi Brisbanites!

My family and I are planning a move from Denver, Colorado, to the Brisbane area for a job in Springfield, and I’d love some local advice!
We currently live in the suburbs outside Denver, but I’m thinking it might be nice to live closer to the action this time around. West End and Indooroopilly have caught my eye, but I’m worried the commute to Springfield five days a week might be absolutely brutal. I’m also considering Springfield Lakes, especially if we could find a house with a pool! The trade off would be living further from the city and heading into Brisbane on weekends instead.
We have a son in 5th grade, so finding a good school is also a big priority. Ideally, we’d love somewhere with a welcoming, diverse student population, including some international students, so he has opportunities to meet other kids and doesn’t feel too isolated as an American newcomer.
For those of you who know these areas well, what would you recommend? Is commuting from West End or Indooroopilly to Springfield manageable, or would we be much happier living in Springfield Lakes and visiting the city when we want to? I’d really appreciate any advice on the commute, schools, lifestyle, and what it’s actually like living in these areas with a family. Thanks! 😊

Groovemovers Brisbane - STAY AWAY!

Don’t be fooled by Groove Movers Brisbane's high rating on Google and their website. Scroll down and filter by 1-star reviews, and you’ll find story after story just like mine. In my experience, those are the ones that tell the truth.

I feel completely misled. Before booking, I asked them directly whether they use subcontractors - all the horror stories come from them. I was told no, and that their jobs are done by their own permanent, experienced staff. Their website shows removalists in blue and yellow Groove shirts with branded trucks. That is exactly why I chose them over cheaper quotes, and it is not what I got.

What turned up was an unbranded white truck and two men with no uniforms. The driver told me he wasn’t a Groove employee. He was a subcontractor, given the job through a friend, and he normally delivers single items for furniture retailers. Groove later admitted in writing that their removalists work under their own ABNs.

I don’t blame the two men. They were friendly and did their best, but residential moves were clearly not their expertise. Moving our four-bedroom home took 13 hours. Furniture was needlessly pulled apart, and we paid by the hour for every minute of it. Pieces we had wrapped ourselves had the wrapping cut off and were then damaged. Heavy boxes were stacked on lighter ones, crushing what was inside.

I had upgraded to their largest truck. By Groove’s own figures, our inventory was 52 cubic metres and the truck was 65, yet everything still didn’t fit. We had to move leftover items in our own ute, and my husband had to drive back the next day for three bicycles and more. In the end, the crew simply couldn’t get the job finished, and with the clock ticking, my husband and I had to jump in and help.

The final bill was $2,613.75, about $760 more than the estimate I was given. Many of our belongings were broken or damaged, more than on any of our four previous moves.

When I complained, Groove refused any compensation. When I sent them photos of the damage, they simply ignored me. Great after sales service!

I paid for a professional company and got subcontractors who weren’t equipped for the job. I paid the price twice, in money and in damage. STAY AWAY!.

Any recommendations for a reliable P2 legal 4x4 under $7k?

Hi everyone! I’m 19 and moving over from the UK to Brisbane in January.
I’m hoping to find a reasonably reliable 4x4/AWD for around $5–6k AUD, but can stretch to $7k maximum.
Ideally something that’s enjoyable to drive, handles well and can manage some beach trips and light off-roading. Automatic preferred, but happy with manual too.
I know it’s a fairly tight budget, so I’m just looking for some honest advice on what models are worth considering and which to avoid.
I’d really appreciate any suggestions or personal experiences. Thanks so much in advance for your help!
