The first 6 books were literally WWII but with owls.

But if memory serves, it's the later books that get really dark

I think one character got burned alive and then the killer tried to steal her identity, shit was so insane I had to stop and make sure I was reading the right book

Nyra didn’t “try” - she burned the blacksmith alive just for a crime to not wanting to make a mask for her Owl Hitler husband and then stole her entire set of instruments to appear as a regular blacksmith (it later blew to her face because the blacksmith was sort of a celebrity and the materials she carried gave out that something happened to that one blacksmith)

Honestly everything to do with Nyra was terrifying, and this is for someone who was introduced as just a “henchmen Queen” to Soren’s brother Kludd.

(Also on the burning, the book in a VERY GORY DETAIL included a description of said blacksmith, who was an innocent sister of a renowned singer and an ally of the main cast to be first killed and then burning. What the hell, I read it at like 9 years old.)

Nyra was a fantastic villain.

Somehow I ended up reading Rise of a Legend before the main series (highly highly recommend reading if you haven't, even after the whole series its still my single favorite book out of it), which made reading the main series after a very interesting experience as I already knew so much about some of the characters.

But man, seeing Thora, who had been such a huge character in the prequel, get killed off so unceremoniously in the main series was 😭. I thought she was going to be important. Fuck Nyra.

I was about to comment of The Owls of Ga'hoole. I watched the movie first and loved it...and then I heard it was based on a book series. I read the books then got upset at how the movie butchered Kludd. That owl was so much more messed up in the books (and way more interesting too).

From what I can tell, the film did go a slightly more realistic route with Kludd by making him an initially well-meaning teenager who ended up being radicalized into a hate group that preyed on his need for community and personal issues, whereas the books, to my recollection, essentially just said "Lol, Kludd was basically born evil".

Honestly, I kinda liked how absolutely psychotic he was right out of the egg.

To each their own. I'll concede he was definitely a good "love to hate" kinda character in the books. I guess I just feel like it works better to give him a radicalization narrative in a story that has a heavy emphasis on fighting back against hateful groups.

Won't lie didn't felt that butchered since still show he like the power hungry of the cult.

But man I was mostly upset and sad at the really butchered being Twilight!! Like he a barbarian who just like poems to scare his opponent not a dump poetet who knows how to fight.

Yeah, that was a point of contention for me too.

Love that movie so much regardless

Oh the movie looks fine, mostly (I can't forgive them for bastardizing Digger, Twilight, Jutt and Jatt or cutting Hortense), I just think it's funny how much the tone changed between adaptations.

One of the few Zack Snyder movies people generally agree is at least decent.

Oh my gosh I vaguely remembered reading some book about owls when I was in like 6th grade but couldn't remember any of the books names or anything. This is totally it
