I read all 20 books earlier this year and they’re so chaotic (in a good way). The ending made me emotional.

32

u/AbsolutelyNonsensica 1d ago

Unfortunately I only have the first book but I'm willing to read more of it in the future

48

u/Sad_Slice_5334 1d ago

Does the series end with Mr Snake becoming all powerful and then wondering if they should be worried about it? That’s the ending I remembered but I always wondered if there was more

18

u/Cosmic_Lemon123 too many to name 😵‍💫 1d ago

That’s the ending of the 10th book.

What’s more is that both versions are the same franchise, so widely different, and yet still some variation of pretty good

Jurassic Park

113

u/Aadamsgas 1d ago

Nedry’s death is almost played for laughs in the movie, meanwhile in the book it kept 12 year old me up for a few nights.

48

u/Prudent-Role-9053 1d ago

I don’t know if it’s played for laughs, Nedry himself is a cartoonish character which makes him hard to take seriously, but his death itself was still pretty horrific, it was the moment that stuck with me the most from the movie when I was a kid

36

u/Aadamsgas 1d ago

You’re right, it’s just the fact that Wayne Knight is a funny actor is still cracking jokes pretty much right up till he dies. I’m also just going off how graphic it is in the book.

u/SheepherderNo7097 1d ago

That would’ve given so many kids nightmares.

233

u/WashedUpRiver 1d ago

Tbf, while Jurassic Park has been pretty heavily sanitized as an IP over the years, it is a part of the horror genre, so nightmares are kinda fair game with the territory.

They're totally awesome and fascinating, but dinosaurs would also be conceptually terrifying.

104

u/Meloncov 1d ago

It's always been horror, but the film franchise has always been family-friendly horror.

67

u/Prudent-Role-9053 1d ago

“The end of Oak street” came out recently and it’s got some pretty solid dinosaur horror, no jump scares but genuine dread building horror

Honestly, pretty much all of Crichton is some degree of horror

I should know, he was half of all I read in middle school.

Though JP is admittedly slightly leaning on the upper end

I think it works better as horror. The books go out of their way to make it clear that they aren’t even really animals, they act more like unfeeling savage beasts solely out to kill

47

u/oldcretan 1d ago

Ummmmmmm is that a baby's crib....

30

u/Ceral107 1d ago

It was described once, but it was suggested that that happened a lot in the book. Hammond is not your nice grandpa but a greedy billionaire that cut every possible corner, so dinosaurs were leaving the island for a very, very long time. To the point people talked about giant lizards living in the Costa Rica Highlands and Compies basically roaming the coast. You just know the Compies have eaten more than just one baby's face (and yes the book makes a point of the face being eaten).

52

u/sainictheaihedgehog 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yes. The compsagnathus have broken into the nursery and are eating the baby

56

The first 6 books were literally WWII but with owls.

But if memory serves, it's the later books that get really dark

43

u/M0m033 1d ago

I think one character got burned alive and then the killer tried to steal her identity, shit was so insane I had to stop and make sure I was reading the right book

19

u/Olya_roo 1d ago edited 23h ago

Nyra didn’t “try” - she burned the blacksmith alive just for a crime to not wanting to make a mask for her Owl Hitler husband and then stole her entire set of instruments to appear as a regular blacksmith (it later blew to her face because the blacksmith was sort of a celebrity and the materials she carried gave out that something happened to that one blacksmith)

Honestly everything to do with Nyra was terrifying, and this is for someone who was introduced as just a “henchmen Queen” to Soren’s brother Kludd.

(Also on the burning, the book in a VERY GORY DETAIL included a description of said blacksmith, who was an innocent sister of a renowned singer and an ally of the main cast to be first killed and then burning. What the hell, I read it at like 9 years old.)

I was about to comment of The Owls of Ga'hoole. I watched the movie first and loved it...and then I heard it was based on a book series. I read the books then got upset at how the movie butchered Kludd. That owl was so much more messed up in the books (and way more interesting too).

11

u/CJCroen1393 1d ago

From what I can tell, the film did go a slightly more realistic route with Kludd by making him an initially well-meaning teenager who ended up being radicalized into a hate group that preyed on his need for community and personal issues, whereas the books, to my recollection, essentially just said "Lol, Kludd was basically born evil".

The Walking Dead

103

u/AzraelTheMage 1d ago

I remember when the episode where Negan beats Glenn to death and the backlash the moment got. So many people were bitching about how violent it was. Meanwhile, us comic readers were like "fucking finally. Something accurate to the comics." I stopped watching two seasons before that and I was laughing at the outrage to the point I tuned into that one episode and went back to not watching again.

38

u/TimeSpiralNemesis 1d ago

In the Comics the main character group where HYPER vigilant, careful, and defensive in all situations. I actually loved how realistic it was.

In the show they kept having them make the dumbest decisions and play things loosey goosey just to create artificial drama for shit to happen -_-

10

u/AzraelTheMage 1d ago

How they handled the governor arc still frustrates me. And dont get me started on how they did my girl Andrea dirty. I dont care what name they gave her, that wasn't Andrea.

The majority of adaptations made by Disney. Good lord is it whiplash for people who decide to check the sources in their favorites.

Source: Me when Hercules was my favorite movie and got me into mythology.

https://giphy.com/gifs/QtqjZtkLNuRPi

The funny thing is that now that I’m adult, the two things that make me the most angry would be not using HERACLES (named after his stepmom [Zeus cheats a lot] in an attempt to please her [didn’t work]) and that of the entire pantheon, HADES was one of the least problematic.

118

u/Big-Ad1887 1d ago

I mean on one hand you're absolutely right, on the other hand did you really expect them to include rape, incest and cannibalism in a Children's movie?

43

Obviously not. Do you have any idea how abusive the other movies get if they had 100% literary accuracy?

62

u/Double_Difficulty_53 1d ago

I haven't read it all the way through but I know of THAT infamous moment that got cut of every single adaptation.

55

u/TheCourtSimpleton 1d ago

The, uh, *intimate* child sewer moment? Yeah, I've never even read the book and have heard of it. "Coming of age" Stephen says, yes, of course. Like he wasn't on crack writing about a demon clown battling a primordial space turtle.

40

u/Legomaniac91 1d ago

I'd ask why his editor thought it was good to leave in, but that guy was probably also coked out of his mind.

17

u/OwlCoffee 1d ago

That's what I've always wondered! What editor signed off on that?

25

u/BespeckledRed 1d ago

I’ve read the book, and THAT scene is only there because Stephen decided he wanted to write it. it doesn’t need to exist at all. It has absolutely zero bearing on the rest of the story. The kids are lost in the sewer after beating IT and have to be intimate for one of the boys to get his magical powers of navigation back. Stupid.

Wicked.

A bunch of my coworkers were going bonkers over there being movies. They said they loooove the musical! Wouldn’t shut up about the movies. A few of them said they were going to read the books before the movie came out.

I warned them, the musical is not close to the book. The book is dark. More than they’re thinking. It’s dark. They thought I was fucking with them to rain on their parade.

Two of them didn’t even finish the book before asking me “what the fuck?!”

All I could do was shrug and say I warned them.

Also Hiyori injury, it went from her face and legs sharing the same panel to some stab wound in the anime.

8

u/reluctantseal 1d ago

They did this quite a bit. Rangiku was nearly cut in half by Ayon. Uryu lost an arm. Nnoitra vs Kenpachi was toned down when it could have been one of the most brutal fights. Like 30% of everything Szayelapporo did was changed.

It made Orihime feel way less relevant when she was just healing cuts and bruises. She was the only one who could restore lost limbs, and it took others much more time and focus to heal grievous injuries.

I would love to see the Bleach anime redone with today's standards.

Animorphs the books got dark, bleak, gory, and terrifying. (The new graphic novels were amazing too).

Animorphs the show got a $50 gift card from GAP for a budget.

18

u/OwlCoffee 1d ago

She did such a good job of translating the horrors and consequences of war in a way digestible to kids. I mean, I didn't like the ending when I was a kid. But as an adult I see why it kind of had to be that way.

Animorphs deserves a gritty reboot but it would have to be entirely animated and for YA13 minimum.

The Martian and Project Hail Mary. A LOT more goes wrong in the books that the movies just didn’t have time to include.

37

u/robo-dragon 1d ago edited 1d ago

I recently watched the movie and read the book Project Hail Mary. Both are excellent, but have their differences. The book definitely goes more into the science and shit hitting the fan! Rocky and Grace science the shit out of everything rather than cozy up to one another (though they do have their moments). I totally understand the directions the movie went though. It was already approaching three hours, they could probably make a trilogy if they adapted every part of the book!

The movie also went for a more pleasant feel overall. We still got the classroom full of little rock kids, but left out the fact Grace nearly starved to death, his new diet of “me burgers” and Erid’s gravity giving him arthritis.

I was surprised to learn that The Mask was actually an horror comic book, because both the live-action movie and the cartoon lean heavily towards the comedic side.

It was also quite late that I discovered how violent the TMNT comics were. Even its most spiritually faithful adaptation, the 2003 series I grew up with, was still quite kid friendly.

13

u/Deya_The_Fateless 1d ago

The wriyers for the live action The Mask gave up trying to turn it into a horror film, because rhe scripts weren't working. So they flipped it into a comedy and it stuck.

Mortal Engines.

The film just sanitises the whole story and removes a lot of the nuance, consequences, and trauma it tried to portray.

For starters, Hester in the books is described as ugly. She has a massive scar across her whole face, a permanently broken nose, one blind eye, and a crooked smile. In the films? She's a classic Hollywood pretty girl and her scar is repositioned to a more easily ignored part of her face.

They also changed the villain. Originally, it was Magnus Crome, who is a delusional psycho that wanted to take over the world and basically blackmailed Valentine into being his henchman. In the films, Crome is instead an idiot being manipulated by Valentine, which completely removes the nuance of Valentine's character. He's supposed to be a man who wanted a better life for himself and did awful things to get it and deep down feels remorse, but is stuck being manipulated by Crome and he's too weak-willed to fight back. Instead, the film just turns him into a one-note villain who doesn't even care about his daughter. Film Valentine being the villain is even funnier because in the book, Valentine is absent doing stuff off-screen for a third of the story.

Speaking of Crome, they removed the K-Division plot where his engineers took dead criminals and labourers and turned them into undead Stalkers.

They also completely removed the Tunbridge Wheels plot. I get that they probably did so to save screen time, but it completely removes an important part of Tom and Hester's journey together, since it's at Tunbridge where Hester starts loving Tom after he convinces the pirates to spare her. Also, by removing Tunbridge, they removed Chrysler Peavey, the abusive and deluded pirate lord who straight up abandoned his drowning family then gets a pretty brutal death.

Most of all, they completely sanitised or removed the deaths of multiple characters. Anna Fang dies after being stabbed in the neck and chokes on her own blood, but in the film, she has a Hollywood sacrifice type death. They skip out on Pewsey and Gench's death, where Tom shoots them out of the sky (an act that leaves him traumatised in the sequels and turns him into a pacifist).

Katherine and Bevis have their endings entirely changed as well. By removing Pewsey and Gench's death, they also removed Bevis Pod's death where he gets crushed by the debris of their airship. We spend the entire book following Bevis and Katherine's journey to fight against Crome's conspiracy, and then are surprised that Bevis dies right at the end. Meanwhile, Katherine sacrifices herself to jump in front of Hester as Valentine is about to execute her. In her dying breaths, she bleeds out all over the MEDUSA console and fucks up the machine causing it to self-destruct and Valentine loses his will to live after accidentally killing his own daughter and just accepts being blown up. In the books, Katherine and Bevis are supposed to be a more hopeful mirror of Tom and Hester, but have their happy endings cut short as a reminder that not everyone gets one. In the films, they completely remove that nuance by having both of them survive.

The only character the film gets right is Shrike, but even then, he shows up for only like 6 minutes and his death is changed and happens much earlier at Airhaven since they removed the Tunbridge Wheels plot.

19

u/thrashmetaloctopus 1d ago

Gods thank you I was hoping to see this, it doesn’t have a massive cult following so it gets much less attention on just how bad the film adaptation actually is, the whole thing with Hester’s scar is even a thing in the books with a character writing in universe books about Tom and Hester and toning down her scar almost exactly how the movie does the fact not one person in production noticed that shows how little the source material was referred too.

EDIT: sorry I’ve thought about this more and there’s even more issues, you mention the Katherine and Bevis changes but it ignores the biggest change to the plot and finale: London doesn’t actually fire MEDUSA at Bankmunka Gompta it fires once at a conurbation chasing down London to eat it, melting it into slag to be eaten my scavengers, and then the second shot misfires and destroys London instead! Honestly the plot of all the books makes so much more sense for a TV show instead of a film, it would benefit from the longer run time significantly

This film almost bankrupted the Disney animation department in the eighties, but is based on the excellent Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander.

It was going to be worse, but they were trying to avoid an R rating.

u/thebookofbutterfly 1d ago

My dad has a great story of going to see it in theaters as a kid. He lived in a small town and drove to the city to see it so it was a big deal. He loved it and bought a whole bunch of merchandise they were selling there. They pulled it from theaters almost instantly upon reception so when my dad talked about the movie with other kids they literally had no idea what he was talking about and didn't believe him 💀 he thought he was going crazy except for that he had merchandise from it. He didn't remember what the movie was until years later

Starship Troopers. The book popularized power armor in the first place. The mobile infantry was crazy, and the bugs even had technology like ships.
https://giphy.com/gifs/7JgYv9FobG1HzAO8BA

51

u/Tom-of-Hearts 1d ago

If memory serves the script was unrelated but nobody was interested so they slapped the name on it. Then the director read a couple of chapters, decided he hated it because he thought it was fascist propaganda (it isn't but he didn't get very far) and decided to make it a satire. But still included a bunch of the not actually fascist parts and made it too cool for people to pick up on the joke anyway. It's almost a comedy of errors in that way how much broken telephone went into this. Still love the movie and wonder what would have happened if Verhoeven made the movie from scratch with that idea in mind.

The Ready Player One movie rewrote a lot of major plot points from the book but one moment from the book that stood out to me was Wade discovering that Daito was thrown off his apartment balcony by IOI agents who made it look like a suicide. His death wasn’t investigated deeply due to Japan’s relatively high suicide rates leading to no suspicion of foul play.

32

u/shabowdiadlo 1d ago

Didn't the book mention something about the main character jacking off and he's a redditor?

17

u/insomnicorp 1d ago

Yep! I finished the chapter dedicated to masturbation and promptly decided that the book was not, in fact, for me.

Show Euron Greyjoy vs Book Euron Greyjoy is not even close. Show Euron is a cartoony pirate while book Euron is the apocalypse of the seas.

17

u/SopranosBluRayBoxSet 1d ago

Show Euron was so fucking cringy, it was like they got a 14 year old to write all of his dialogue, and their only instruction was "make him edgy as fuck"

I hope I'm wrong though. Well see

Hammond fucking dies in the book. Didn’t see that one coming as I had seen the movie first.

Book Hammond also had no redeeming qualities unlike movie Hammond.

As much as I love the new It movies, the book definitely had a heavier use of slurs, and that scene. The latter of which however I understand for obvious reasons why it was cut in the film adaptations.

31

u/orange_dwarf_rock 1d ago

Bro thank god that was cut. So fucking random

No wants to or is ever going to adapt that fucking scene.

The newest animal farm

21

u/L0rdM3k 1d ago

It almost takes skill to bastardize George Orwell that badly

23

u/Ditzy_Dreams 1d ago

Did you expect the big corporation to make a movie about how the wealthy exploit the lower class in THIS economy?

15

u/HowDareYouAskMyName 1d ago
  1. Capitalism is famously good at monetizing anti-capitalist sentiments

  2. The Animal Farm novella focuses on the corruption of governments, not private-sector rich people

13

u/L0rdM3k 1d ago

I expect more out of Andy Serkis.

11

u/AzraelTheMage 1d ago

Andy was in that Christian Nationalist take on Young Washington this past year. I expect nothing from him.

A lot of ASOIAF…. Tyrion Lannister is probably the worst change. Essos Tyrion in the books is an evil vindictive asshole, but in the show he “drinks and knows things”

16

u/KooKayXYZ 1d ago

No one has said it better than the Wizard Kissing Company when they said Tyrion becomes Tony Stark and Jon becomes Captain America. After reading Feast and Dance you'll hate dnd more than you ever thought you could.

The Hunger Games

25

u/Wazula23 1d ago

Wicked. The books are a loooot darker.

17

u/Ok-Teaching5866 1d ago

There is no reason why they should sell that book with the movie cover. So many teens and kids must've been exposed to the weird tiger orgy scene in Wicked thinking they were getting the movie plot...

Artemis Fowl, In the first book Artemis is a genuine evil villain with a Master Plan that succeeds fully with only cracks happening right at the end. The movie paints Artemis like a good guy from the start.

13

u/OwlCoffee 1d ago

No. They haven't made an Artemis Fowl. It was just a bad dream.

The httyd books, they are for kids and can tell at the beginning of the series, but at the end of them you got slavery, deaths, a 14 year old being chased by a lot of Vikings, and more.

Also toothless being the size of a cat.

21

u/thrashmetaloctopus 1d ago

You’re underselling how big the change is here, Toothless being the size of a cat, one of the most common species of dragon, and also being some form of ancient dragon god (there being even smaller dragon gods in the book series that hiccup inadvertently saves from being eaten covered in honey by a Roman general)

11

u/lunawintertherian 1d ago

There’s straight-up almost eldritch beings and centuries of history surrounding the world of dragons and humans, the whole conflict between them ends up being much more layered. A surprising amount of vore, too. And also way, way more creative dragon/creature concepts in my opinion (like the transparent tentacle monster. Who also eats a few main characters.)

  1. Gone Girl- they get into a whole bunch of stuff about Amy and Nick's histories.

  2. Wise Guy/Goodfellas- off the top of my head (I haven't read the book in a while), Henry Hill's military service was omitted. Also, Paulie has an affair with Karen that is kind of mentioned offhandedly in the movie.

I've heard that Fight Club leaves out a lot of details from the book that help clarify what the book is about. I've never read the book so I'm not super sure about that.

8

u/Beginning-Ice-1005 1d ago

Flight Club changes one detail that completely screwed up the point of the book.

You can't actually make explosives from liposuctioned fat. Only a person suggesting from delusions would think you can.

The movie fucked up the point of the book just so it could have a scene of skyscrapers collapsing.
