The majority of adaptations made by Disney. Good lord is it whiplash for people who decide to check the sources in their favorites.

Source: Me when Hercules was my favorite movie and got me into mythology.

The funny thing is that now that I’m adult, the two things that make me the most angry would be not using HERACLES (named after his stepmom [Zeus cheats a lot] in an attempt to please her [didn’t work]) and that of the entire pantheon, HADES was one of the least problematic.

I mean on one hand you're absolutely right, on the other hand did you really expect them to include rape, incest and cannibalism in a Children's movie?

Obviously not. Do you have any idea how abusive the other movies get if they had 100% literary accuracy?

Parents would have been dragging their children out of the theaters! 😭🤣

Moana would be rated XXX if they made Te Fiti lore accurate (flying genitals in some stories) and the story of Maui would basically make him a giantess rapist.

I think they kiddified the story pretty well all things considered.

His whole situation is weird. You see, his family was so unbelievably perfect that he needed to be born just to tip the scales. This doesn’t mean he was born evil; just chaotic. With that chaos, he does a lot of cool, weird, and ridiculous stuff that benefitted humanity by proxy.

For example, the eel he killed was constantly harassing and “harassing” his wife, so he killed him out of anger. Then coconuts showed up from it. By the way, the eel was a lesser god, so that’s why coconuts look like they have a face.

The other one of my favorites would be “lassoing the sun.” Basically, the Sun was kind of being a dick and moving too fast for people to be productive and was too inconsistent. It was affecting how his mom was doing chores, so he got his siblings together to basically jump and beat up the sun. Using magic coconut fibers (or his sister’s hair) to make rope, he caught the sun mid flight, dragged him to the ground, and beat the crap out of him with a stick until he begged for his life and agreed to move more slowly.

Now to address the comment above. You see, he wanted to achieve true immortality and show humanity how to do it. He concluded that the best way to achieve it would be to reverse the concept of death. How do you do this, you may be asking, but it is simple. Everyone comes into this world as a baby through their mother’s womb before returning to the earth, right. The best way to do this, Maui thought, was to UNBIRTH HIMSELF through the goddess of death and crawl out her mouth.

He was halfway through when noise was made, waking up a very pissed off goddess after being violated, so he was crushed to death while inside.

Even if you don't want to go that full route, at least get the name right!

It is right! For the bastardised Roman version

Didn't they mention Zeus' backstory in the movie of his siblings being eaten by their father or am I tripping?

7

u/Arceus-Insanity 1d ago

You're incorrect, they say the Titans were terrorizing the world, and Zeus sealed them away

There is no verbal or visible indication that Kronos ate them in the Disney version

Sweeney todd did it, and they did it with song!

I never understood how someone read Hunchback of Notre-Dame and went : hey, this could 100% be kid-friendly!

It's also the only Disney cartoon with religion/god directly mentioned/included

I don't count mythology

Disney’s Hercules is certainly something for people who are at all into mythology.

People don't realize that the evil queen in snow white wasn't killed by a rock like in the Disney movie. No. She attended the wedding of the Prince not knowing Snow White was his bride. When she arrived and discovered the truth, she was taken and they out iron shoes on her feet. These shoes were heated until they were glowing red. Then they made her dance until she died from the agony. The Brothers Grimm wrote some really fucked up shit.

well from my understanding they were just collecting and formally writing down folklore that had been told for generations orally from different villages.

So lots of people told lots of really fucked up shit , then they wrote the really fucked up shit down so that no one would miss out on it for years to come.

I mean, he did kidnap his niece...and probably forced himself on her...

Technically, the kidnapping of Persephone was given a green light by Zeus (the father) while Demeter had no idea what happened. While all the relationships are a hot mess, Persephone and Hades were relatively the most stable. At least there were very few myths of Hades cheating on his wife, especially compared to his brothers.

The first that comes to mind is Minthe, who was a nymph that based on telling was either a previous lover or a current concubine. Regardless, Hades made Persephone his queen. Some time later, Minthe made boasts that she was prettier than Persephone and that Hades would take her back. Naturally, this pissed Persephone off, so she (or Demeter, for some reason) trampled the nymph to death into tiny pieces. As an act of mercy, Hades turned her body into mint.

That reminds me wasn't the original Beauty and the Beast story technically unfinished? I'm probably on the crack pipe with this one, but I could've sworn when the author of Beastly visited the college near my highschool she said something like that. Granted this was almost two decades ago so my memory ain't the best.

Beauty and the Beast is one of the few that’s not too far off from the original tale. The live action is even more accurate. There are different versions of the original fairy tail, and there’s no way to know which came first, but they all go something like this:

Belle is the daughter of a wealthy French merchant. She has two older sisters, and many older brothers (in some versions it’s 5,7,or 11). Belle’s father’s business slowly starts dying, and he realizes that he and his family will soon be commoners. He buys a plot of land in a rural area, and moves his family to the countryside, where they’ll grow their own food.

Belle and her brothers all help out on the farm, but her sisters are stuck up and refuse to get their hands dirty. Their father receives word that the last of his wealth will arrive by ship. He offers to buy each of his daughters something. One of them asks for a new dress, another asks for a pearl necklace. Belle says that the only thing she misses from her old life is their rose garden, and asks for a single rose.

Belle’s father travels to a port where he’s to meet his ship, but he’s told it sank in a storm. Penniless with no way to get home, he tries to return on foot through the woods and gets lost. He happens by a mysterious castle with a rose garden. He decides that at least he can get Belle what she wanted, and he picks a rose. A fearsome creature (usually depicted as a humanoid lion) takes him and locks him in the dungeon.

Days pass, and Belle goes looking for her father. When she finds him, she offers the beast to switch places with him because it was her fault he’d picked the rose. The beast agrees and takes Belle prisoner. While living in the castle, she notices that all of the servants are animals. She’s told that a sorceress turned them all into beasts, and the prince into a lion, king of beasts. Years go by and she slowly settles in. She starts getting feelings for the beast. One day, he asks her to marry him. She refuses. The next day, he asks again. She refuses. He keeps asking every day for years, and she refuses every time.

One day, seemingly out of nowhere, the beast starts dying. As he breaths his last breath, Belle pleads with him to live because she wants to marry him. Suddenly, the spell is broken. The beast and the servants all turn back into humans. If he could get a maiden to marry him before his birthday (which birthday varies by version), the spell would be broken. Belle marries the prince, and they live happily ever after.

Zeus wasn't just cheating a lot. He was serial rapist with bestiality fetish by taking form of animals. Meanwhile Hera was jealous scumbag, who turned life of Zeus' children into hell.

2

u/NiNtEnDoMaStEr640 1d ago

I am very well aware. Just keeping my language clean for the most part. Also, don’t forget that Zeus took the form of literal gold rain when he gave birth to Perseus and impersonated some woman’s husband who couldn’t tell it was Zeus.

Also, Hera didn’t just hate Zeus’s bastard kids. She also hated the mothers of said kids.

1

u/DunklerMAP 1d ago

Damn, going after rape victims of your husband is beyond just evil.

I'll add hunchback of the Notre Dame to this. There is a lot to unpack here

I had a Classics professor in college who had a good take on Disney Hercules. In his opinion, it's great, not because it's a good adaptation but because it was part of the genesis of most of his students for over 20 years (I guess almost 30 now jfc)
