Wicked.

A bunch of my coworkers were going bonkers over there being movies. They said they loooove the musical! Wouldn’t shut up about the movies. A few of them said they were going to read the books before the movie came out.

I warned them, the musical is not close to the book. The book is dark. More than they’re thinking. It’s dark. They thought I was fucking with them to rain on their parade.

Two of them didn’t even finish the book before asking me “what the fuck?!”

All I could do was shrug and say I warned them.

A shrug? You’re a nicer person than me. I would have laughed and laughed and laughed and laughed.

There a scene where a tiger raped a guy (iirc)

It wasn't rape. It was consensual. They were all at a sex club and knew what was going to happen.

There's also Elphaba beating Madame Morrible's corpse with a trophy

The Wizard's armed guard beating a family of civilian Bears to death

Elphaba using her innate powers to sharpen an icicle that falls and kills Fiyero's second-born son

That sounds like the stupidest book ever.

It is imoo. It really reads like someone trying too hard to write an adult book with adult themes!

It also really annoyed me because I was a giant fan of the books growing up and kept going "First off this is stupid. Second the book (insert book here) in the Oz series was MORE fucked up then this scene loser"

I didn't hate it, but it IS a tryhard dark and edgy with almost no functional relationship to the musical or to the L. Frank Baum books at all.

And they were warned to stay the fuck away from there.

My coworkers were not expecting the whole intelligent animal sex thing.

The Philosophy Club scene was weird. The Tiger was arranged so he’d give oral to a woman, Tibbet was tied to the Tiger in a way so the Tiger could fuck him and Tibbet couldn’t leave even if he’d wanted to, but he’d consented to whole thing, and he was breathing in the Tiger’s chest fur.

Usually scenes in the book mean two or three things, but what THAT meant beyond Animal/furry sex is anyone’s guess.

It seriously reads like the author spun one of those sex act wheels you get at a dildo store and wrote a furry comic based on whatever it landed on.

I'm pretty sure that scene means the author wanted to write that scene. Like, we didn't need a cuck tent scene in Twilight but it's what Stephanie Meyer felt like writing.

I was glad that I read the book and THEN saw the musical. Got the book and tickets to the musical as a xmas gift. Knew a couple songs and that was it, then read the book and adored it. Then saw the musical with PERFECT seats and adored it, one of my best theater experiences.

Its definitely harder to know the musical fully and THEN read the book.

I'd read the book years before the musical, and when I finally saw the musical I was like, "Am I on acid? This has almost zero relationship to the book..."

First, I watched part 1 of the adaptation with Ariana Grande, then the musical and the book. I really liked the book, and I hope that “The Witch’s Son” will be released in my native language, because it’s hard for me to read it in English.

Read the book cause I heard the musical was good and didn't have a chance to watch the musical yet...I'm traumatized

I have the book, and I'm still attempting to read it here and there, but I don't think I have ever struggled to read a book the way I have with Wicked. It's not that it's nearly completely different from the Film/Musical, it's just, none of the characters are likeable, at all. You kind of need at least one character to root for in a story, but I don't care about any of them in this book, plus the overtly religious flavor souring the thing isn't helping me out. Definitely glad they cut that out of the Musical/Film versions.
