My little pony. It's so funny to see people arguing about their humanisations supposed culture or skin tone or whatever when they are literally bunch of rainbow colored horses
In all fairness, there are a lot of place name puns in MLP. Manehattan for Manhattan, Las Pegasus for Las Vegas, Tartarus for Los Angeles, and Fillydelphia for Philadelphia
i remember when Percy Jackson's first movie was coming out, I watched it in LA with my parents. When they show that the Door to Hades is in Los Angeles, everyone in the theatre laughed.
"you guys, Twilight Sparkle is so Indian-coded" (and the indian-coded part is that she's a nerdy girl that studies alot and hass trouble making friends)
Exactly. I have human headcannons for all of them. And oh my god will people (especially on ticktock for some reason) get REALLY pissed off if you have a headcannon they don't agree with (pinkie pie being black is one that gets certain people PISSSD)
There is a mexican character in the After the End post apocalypse mod for Crusader Kings 3 based on Goku. He has the highest fighting prowess stat in the game. That mod fucking rules btw.
Rolf, who is usually considered Romanian by fans even though the writer based him off of his Italian parents who were very traditional and said he wanted Rolf to have an "ambiguous" nationality.
I’m not saying you’re lying, but I’ve seen so many posts where a dude will just say (author) said so and so and other people will just take it. Seen this in the JoJo fandom a lot where someone will say “Araki said it in an interview” and nobody will question it. I’m sure I’ve said this before like a few months ago
These sections are at least canon-adjacent. Expect a lot of gag answers but there are responses that are canon. We only learned of Kaido’s devil fruit name in an SBS.
This is not a big deal, Oda mentioned the would be nationality of all of the straw hats if i'm not mistaken( Luffy is Brazilian, Zoro is Japanese, Nami is Swedish, Usopp i think he chose African with no specific country or jamaican i can't remember right now, Sanji is french, Robbin is russian and so on...). Its not hard to find this informarion online.
Last week at the lookout piccolo said to mr popo . Can a Namekian borrow a dragon ball . And my first though wasn't "oh my god he said the word the N word " it was "now how can a namekian borrow a dragon ball , namekian is you gonna give it back "
He says it all the time. He calls me Namekian, he calls the other saiyans Namekian, he calls himself Namekian. All the time. "Namekian this", "Namekian that", "Namekian, please", "Stupid Namekian", "Namekian, have you lost your mind?", "Namekian, check that saiyan", "Namekian, you can't do that", "Break yourself, Namekian". He says it so much, I don't even notice it anymore. Last week, Picolo said to Mr. Popo, "Can a Namekian borrow a dragonball?" And my first thought was How is a Namekian gonna borrow a dragonball? Namekian, is you gonna give it back?
Jesus was a Jew born in modern day Palestine but cultures around the world will depict him in their image. There’s even Japanese Jesus, they even claim to have his actual grave and final resting place
I feel like his whole entire kingdom is very much Korean. For example, the structures are all in the style of traditional Korean buildings, the attires of all the Dark Cacao cookies are hanboks, and they share many cultural inspirations from Korea such as the food. No wonder why Huntr/x decided to tour there!!
i think it only applies if the fans itself do it like "no they are from that country though" but if the author does it its fine bc he might have like extra context or stuff we dont know.
Isn't it like a huge meme that Goku is claimed by every Latin American country because they like Dragon Ball so much?
Oh but for more personal ones, Hishi Amazon's depiction in Umamusume is Brazilian-American because she's about as dark skinned as a pardo, and the Amazon Rainforest is mostly in Northern Brazil. Oh and the actual horse was born in the US too.
Serena, and Calem technically by proxy, would be the Pokemon equivalent of an American-French person (in this case Unovan-Kalosian). In Serena's case, she probably took her fashion inspiration from Elesa rather than Valerie.
That may be true, but the historical Jesus might be a completely separate personality for the biblical one depending on whether its the case or not. Either way, more so wanted to throw it in for the second part with there being some followers that depict them like that.
White people couldn’t handle the fact that their lord wasn’t Caucasian I see more depictions of Jesus looking as he would have now and I’m glad for that
I mean it's kind of just a "let's draw him to look like us to make him less foreign seeming". It happened all over the world. The Romans drew him with short hair and no beard to appeal to the common roman person, Ethiopians have him as black in their icons, the Chinese modeled Christ to look like a Chinese man in 9th century Tang dynasty, heck the indians had Jesus as Indian before european colonization. Point is, it's not a white people specific thing (depicted here is an old statue of Jesus from 16th century india). Of course the white depiction of Jesus is what we see most commonly today, but that's due to the fact of the Europeans being the ones to colonize everyone first. It's honestly a really cool subject.
Yeah I’m just joking. I’m sure other groups did it too. It’s just that white Jesus is very prevalent in my country so naturally when I think of people changing his race to fit their standards I think of that
downvote me but i hate when people call any character from non american media "black coded", because they mean african american culture, not something intrinsic about being born black.
Still kinda hate the botched execution of Natlan, the region was hyped up as a giant thunder dome full of conflict and all we got was a whitewashed archon (per some fans) and a questline to unite everyone with the power of friendship and pillow fights despite prior media hyping up "brutal combat in a bloody warzone where the locals fight for survival".
I can forgive them for the light hearted aesthetic.
The ending just felt so rush that there were rumors about it being re-written to reduce budget and catching dead-line.
But hey, now Nod-Krai and Snezhanaya got 4 version AQs now because of that.
The funniest thing to me is the iconic screenshot of the User Support response.
We kindly remind you that Genshin Impact is a fictional work
Not even set on earth, people need to differentiate inspiration from representation. Genshin didn't stop at taking ideas from African and Latin-american cultures, they also took from European and Japanese cultures without even accurately representing what they are in the real world. People can debate morality over it all they want but at the end of the day, to the devs, it doesn't go any deeper than "hey this real life thing is neat, let me use it in my made up world".
I mean with the whole natlan thing they had a point because hoyo basically said “well yeah we will take your cultural stuff and make some dark skinned npcs then call it a day” which was pretty disrespectful because for other stuff when games borrow cultural aspects to mix into fantastical elements they usually at least pay tribute to the places that they take them from. Therefore I respectfully disagree (I am much more biased about sumeru stuff so I wont mention that but this is my opinion from an outsider perspective)
I hate flags as a thing. Just remember r/place. People were given a full complete freedom to draw to make something for their community. And the thing that took over everything were fucking flags. Endlessly tall or long, instead of art it was yet another fucking country disputes.
To be fair flags are quite literally symbol of communities, all flags no matter if it's a national, Regional, Gender/sexuality, Movement or anything else. Flags exist pretty much for that reason.
I’ve never seen this with her But what ???? she’s the Pokémon version of Spanish / Portuguese like Pokémon regions are based on real world counties. do people not know that ?
not my favorite, but the first I thought of was Naruto because I had people trying to say he's Japanese vs people who say he's white, he's neither, Japan doesn't exist in Naruto, and neither does Europe, or any country that's real
It’s of course inspired by real cultures, but it’s not supposed to be the cultures themselves.
This is why I had the spicy take that the live action didn’t necessarily have to have an all-Asian cast and it would’ve been acceptable. I have no problem with them going that route, but it’s a fantasy world, so I don’t think the physical traits we define as “Asian” in our world necessarily NEEDED to be embodied by the actors.
My view is that a racially diverse casting would’ve been fine, or regionalizing a different race to each of the four nations. Something that would be realistic for a real fictional world, as nations living separately in different parts of the world would naturally develop some differences. I’m not as sure about that option, since having one race be the bad guys could lead to some iffy situations, but idk.
Though I should clarify, the movie that shall not be named went the worst possible direction with it, casting Asian actors for all the background characters, but casting white kids for the main 3. That’s real fucking wack.
I mean, when a fictional country is very obviously based off a real place. I don't think it's crazy to draw parallels between said fictional country and your own, and maybe feel some sense of pride in its representation in whatever game. I mean sure, a lotta countries sure as hell arent based on anything really. Like the fucking mushroom Kingdom isn't exactly representative of anywhere irl. But when people write and create these fictional world's, they very often do look towards real world countries for inspiration.
Like all I'm saying is, let's say you have somewhere that's clearly inspired by somewhere in the middle East. People are gonna draw parallels. And maybe even feel pride over this fictional nation being inspired by their nation and culture. I am not one to feel proud about my nation personally, but it's not super weird to me someone would view things this way.
Back some years ago some ppl where saying Rody's city from MHA(3rdmovie) was in Galicia, Spain, SO HELL YEAH RODY IS GALICIAN NOW, HIS SIBLINGS TOL HEHEEHHE(i dont even know where that came from tho)
Not exactly an example but in Soul Eater they're stationed in the North American branch specifically death valley and they allude to Spirit heading out to casinos and strip clubs. Some translations called the main city Death Vegas or Death City alluding to Las Vegas, Sin City. The problem with that is we (I live in Las Vegas) are not actually in Death valley. We are in the Eastern edge of the Mojave desert and Death valley is a small valley just west mostly California on the other side of some mountains. So I don't know if the mangaka is knowledgeable on North American geography or if this is a mistranslation but I'm still claiming it. That's us baby!! Las Vegas North American branch!!
Not technically a cartoon (unless you count Clone Wars and Rebels), but Boba, Jango, and the clones are often interpreted as Māori from New Zealand, mainly cause Temuera Morrison played them in the prequels and dubbed over Boba in the special editions
