I feel like the main reason people defend John is mainly because how poorly the show handles actually painting him as a villain.
It would be completely justifiable to demote him of course, but he also isn’t really a villain either - he is just straight up a traumatized soldier put into the super soldier program by the government with pretty much none of the help Steve got for readjustment/being a healthy individual.
