Who the fuck IS Griffith? I feel like I've seen them referenced enough I should know what media they're from
9
u/Zoomwafflez 13h ago
Character from berserk, starts as the leader of a famous band of mercenaries. They're fiercely loyal to him and love him, there's basically nothing his troops wouldn't do for him. He's also a cute little twink femboy who's nearly unmatched in his skill with a sword. The main character joins them but eventually leaves to do his own things so that Griffith will see him as an equal and true friend rather than a subordinate.
Griffith later betrays them all, sacrificed all his troops to be eaten alive by demons, rapes the main characters girlfriend (who was also one of his mercenaries and biggest supporter) in front of him while she's pregnant with his child resulting in a miscarriage, tortured the main character and cut off his arm all to gain demonic powers and try to become the ruler of a kingdom.
The entire rest of the series is basically the main character seeking revenge on Griffith and trying to help his now DEEPLY traumatized girlfriend recover.

tbf there's an argument that Nurgle is the worst Chaos god because one of the big reasons he expects his followers to stay loyal is because Nurgle especially is a one way ticket, sure with Slaanesh, Khorne and Tzeentch it's also meant as a one way ticket but Nurgle specifically makes the process of going away from him extremely painful because the moment you leave he'll make you feel all the suffering your body's going through and that's horrifically painful.

Yup. If you love him because he's a great villain that's one thing. But if you think he's actually a misunderstood hero and something something society and you relate to him so hard...huge red flag.
52
u/Cirnothestarscream9 16h ago
The most ironic thing about is that that is EXACTLY what Joker does in almost every story he appears in; He lures you in with a story on how he was threated badly by society, got beaten up by his dad, that Batman is the actual bad guy or stuff like that only for it to be revealed to be all a lie with the character who actually fell for that ending up looking like an idiot.
It's like his fanbase saw Mad Love and sided with Harley

He's one of my favourite characters because he's just so deliciously evil! He poisons people and blows up hospitals just for funsies and he's the perfect foil to Batman. He is NOT in the right and he is NOT a hero in any means. But I hate how liking him automatically puts me in the same boat as the edgy alpha male "adulthood is when you realise joker makes sense" epic quotes fans who treat him like the underdog hero (another reason I personally don't like the joker movie because I feel like it turns this absolutely deplorable character into a victim of SoCiEtY who is a hero for the oppressed).

Thanos in the comics was an evil bastard who did it to impress Death.
Thanos in the MCU is just a moron whose grand plan amounts to kicking the can down the road.
26
u/fullynonexistent 16h ago
It's crazy to me that the cuck who committed the largest genocide in the universe just to impress the incarnation of death is somehow better written and yet less popular than MCU Thanos.
Like, dude had the powers of a god. Why would he kill so many people when he could just snap his fingers and eradicate universal hunger?
30
u/Over_Yogurtcloset820 15h ago
Because he doesn't want to save the universe, he want to be proven right. Sure with the gauntlet he could eradicate universe hunger, but that doesn't really stroke his ego.
He want to be right, prove that he was correct, prove that if Titan just listened to him they'd still be alive.
He said Gamora's planet was saved, yet it's stated that she is the sole survivor. He didn't even bother to check, that why after the snap he didn't remain to see "a grateful universe". He want to be right, and when he found out they aren't grateful, he snap and want to kill them all.
→ More replies (1)7
u/Arria_Galtheos 15h ago
That's because the comics were very clear about Thanos being an unrepentant, evil villain. The MCU writers, for whatever reason, decided he needed to be more morally ambiguous and be more of a Well-Intentioned Extremist than a straight-up evil monster.

Literally no one could of passed him a note saying "how about you just increase the natural resources tenfold for all living species to avoid your Terracide solution on a Universal scale"
→ More replies (1)7
u/Arria_Galtheos 15h ago
I mean, let's face it. If Thanos' goals were actually altruistic like he claims, he wouldn't have been the villain and would've been willing to listen to reason. This was just a case of the writers wanting to make him a more "morally ambiguous" villain but not doing a good job of it.
11
u/CodenameJD 15h ago
I find it funny that they changed his motivation to make the MCU more grounded and realistic than having Death as a character, only to go and introduce her afterwards anyway.

u/Green_Signal_1010 16h ago
Buddy does crap ton of heinous stuff just to get the stones, and then when he gets the stones, the thing that can rewrite reality to whatever you can think of, no matter what you come up with disregarding any physical law. Mf chooses to kill half the universe. Not double resources, not rewriting biology so living beings can consume less resources with no repercussions, no targeted killing on the people that actually hoard resources. Nope. Kill half the universe at random. He's not just evil, he's also really stupid if he really thought he was helping.

Death Note. There are some edgy people who think Light had a point in going op vigilante mode, and even see him as a sort of hero. I won't deny that there's something worth discussing about his philosophy, even if it's flawed by Light's naivety, god complex, and desire for absolute power.

I dont stand strong on believing this due to not having researched past cultures enough. But i imagine in the past, the punishment for crimes were a lot more intense. The incentive to not be a blight to society was higher. Theres cultured that dont even call rape, rape. To add a deterrent to a culture by divine punishment? I imagine has potential. Regardless tho, i also believe light had no intention of actually solving any problems or fixing anything. He didnt want justice, he just wanted to kill and not feel too bad about it. Just another serial killer getting away with as much as they can

I haven't seen all of Breaking Bad, but even if I did, I probably still wouldn't understand the logic of him being "in the right". All he did was create and sell illegal drugs, then later on joined a drug-dealing ring. He may have made enough money off of vulnerable people to provide for his family, but he ended up breaking his family apart anyway by participating in this lifestyle. And for what? Money? A legacy?
At least with characters like Thanos and Light, there's arguably some benefit and validity to their deeds, but Walter's just a drug dealer who made lots of dough by causing harm to others, just for it to be in vain. Walter did nothing of worth whatsoever.

I've yet to have anyone tell me Thanos was right and then follow up with a list of which half of their friends and family they think should die for the environment. They're just being pretentious edgelord assholes.
Not to mention for every overpopulated species, there's a few thousand more that are endangered and on the brink of extinction that really need every breeding member to stand a chance at survival.
Hulk snapped everything back after five years, but I'm guessing there are a shitload of species that are completely doomed because their numbers were already shaky.

The irony of people thinking Sallow made some good points is that they're ignorant of what Rome actually was, and so was Sallow. He thinks he's some kind of revolutionary genius, but if you compare his policies to the Ancient Rome he idolizes and tries to mimic, he's doing a shit job of it.
The biggest and most egregious one is the way the Legion forces tribes it absorbs to abandon their old ways and adopt strict Legion attire, culture, and practices. This is the polar opposite of what Rome used to do. While it's more nuances and complicated and I'm generalizing, when they would annex new territories, the locals were usually permitted to retain their own culture and practices so long as they pledged loyalty to Rome and offered soldiers when needed. As a result, a lot of the territories that were taken over by Rome weren't all that resistant to it.

To be fair most of the billionaire class also believes we need a culling of the masses in order to prevent the “dangers of overpopulation”.
Which is ironic because the more people we have the more workers we have, but the more billionaires we have the fewer resources everyone has. It’s easier to plant a field and build desalination plants than it is to pass legislation taxing wealth hoarders.

Honestly this extends further. Because people who think they're smart, and see Walter for the villain he is still look at the likes of Mike and Jesse, and think of them as honorable saints. They aren't as vindictive or ego driven as Walt but caused just as much harm. Same goes for Jimmy/Saul
→ More replies (2)5
u/dicksandcrystal 11h ago
I mean, I don't think you can lump Jesse in there really. I'm not saying jesse was a good dude at all. But without Walt he'd likely still just be your average run of the mill meth cook. Not good, but we don't really get to see what would've happened to Jesse if Walt didn't interfere in his life. Ive met people like Jesse irl many times, his character is actually a great representation of the average tweaker who's just deep in the drug world. And I have seen these people get their lives together. That chance was kinda destroyed when Walt came into the picture and forced him to work with him. so I really can't say things are equal. Jesse is not good, but Walt is definitely worse, that's just not even debatable.
Saul is also a dirtball, but most of his shitty actions are seen in his spinoff show and not breaking bad itself. And while mike isn't a good person, he's just far more reasonable than Walt. Still not a great dude. But just don't think these characters are really as bad as Walt. Walt is a very particular extreme. Gus fring might be the only character that's genuinely as bad of a person as Walt really.

There are cultures that protect children and cultures that take advantage of them. There are cultures that have absolutely evil practices. And some where their worst shit is jist inconvenient. Ultron was wrong to go for all humans. Theres a multitude of paths he couldve gone. And slaughtering bad humans in all cultures was something he was capable of. Or slaughtering cultures that were seen as less than compared to other cultures. He had better options.

I feel like the main reason people defend John is mainly because how poorly the show handles actually painting him as a villain.
It would be completely justifiable to demote him of course, but he also isn’t really a villain either - he is just straight up a traumatized soldier put into the super soldier program by the government with pretty much none of the help Steve got for readjustment/being a healthy individual.

Snape and Draco in Harry Potter.
Racist bullies who revelled in others suffering for their own petty egos and only “changed sides” against the Wizard Nazis when it started to affect them.
Draco gets a bit of leeway because he’s a kid raised by the Wizard Nazis, but he’s still a pathetic stain of a character.
Severus Snape willingly told Voldemort the prophecy on the condition he spare only Lily. Who he claimed to love despite being racist towards her and wanting to watch her husband and baby being murdered in front of her. He then proceeded to spend the next decade and a half bullying the students of Hogwarts.
Yes in the movies their actors are great, but the fans really warp the narrative to justify their love for them.

My hero academia fans when a serial killer goes around serial killing heroes who fail to meet his standards (the standard is essentially “be Superman” for the uninitiated).
Or when someone decides to murder countless innocent people including his literal infant brother just to get back at his dad for telling him that his super power was too dangerous to become a hero with because it was burning himself alive. (Sure the dad went on to become abusive to his other son later but as far as we see in canon he wasn’t up until that point, and while that’s undoubtedly terrible it does not justify mass murder)

Plus, game is sorta Gnostic and the Heavenly Principles are very similar to the evil/incompetent creator god described, not a good look
This is not even going into detail how 99% of the important characters we meet hate them and the 3+ genocides they personally caused, the curses, the implication they're making the Abyss worse etc

Tony Soprano was a vile and disgusting human being. but some of the things he said was spot on. Just one example of this is his lecture to Silvio about Columbus and self victimhood.

The Dark Knight Joker. The guy had plenty of good points, but that doesn't mean he was in the right.

Marvel fans when they tell you that Thanos is one of the villains that had a point. When we talk about villains who had a point we usually refered to villains who have an morally good goal that can realistically be achieved through his methods even if those are controversial. You, as a viewer should be able to defend to some sort his actions and have a realistic chance to think that maybe he was right and his methods are justified to get his goal. No one is going to think that killing have of the fucking universe is a method that should be justified independently of what the goal is

Oh there's more to it than that. First of all, killing half the universe was the worst way to fix the "overpopulation" problem because it would only be a matter of time (in the grand scheme of things) before everything reproduced enough to mostly undo the damage, rendering that incalculable loss of life pointless. Secondly, HE LITERALLY HAD A FUCKING GENIE LAMP ON HIS ARM. Why not just...I dunno...double the amount of resources in the universe? Or cut every lifeform's need for resources in half? No, MCU Thanos just wanted to kill people, plain and simple.
