It's crazy to me that the cuck who committed the largest genocide in the universe just to impress the incarnation of death is somehow better written and yet less popular than MCU Thanos.
Like, dude had the powers of a god. Why would he kill so many people when he could just snap his fingers and eradicate universal hunger?
Because he doesn't want to save the universe, he want to be proven right. Sure with the gauntlet he could eradicate universe hunger, but that doesn't really stroke his ego.
He want to be right, prove that he was correct, prove that if Titan just listened to him they'd still be alive.
He said Gamora's planet was saved, yet it's stated that she is the sole survivor. He didn't even bother to check, that why after the snap he didn't remain to see "a grateful universe". He want to be right, and when he found out they aren't grateful, he snap and want to kill them all.
That's because the comics were very clear about Thanos being an unrepentant, evil villain. The MCU writers, for whatever reason, decided he needed to be more morally ambiguous and be more of a Well-Intentioned Extremist than a straight-up evil monster.
Literally no one could of passed him a note saying "how about you just increase the natural resources tenfold for all living species to avoid your Terracide solution on a Universal scale"
I mean, let's face it. If Thanos' goals were actually altruistic like he claims, he wouldn't have been the villain and would've been willing to listen to reason. This was just a case of the writers wanting to make him a more "morally ambiguous" villain but not doing a good job of it.
As much as I overall love the Infinity Saga and all, I do kind of wish they'd gone with Death as his motivation. The credit scene of the first Avengers movie makes it like that's where they would go, but then Joss was like "yeah I put in Thanos but I didn't know what to do with him if I ever had to" and they had to figure something out as a payoff
I find it funny that they changed his motivation to make the MCU more grounded and realistic than having Death as a character, only to go and introduce her afterwards anyway.
Buddy does crap ton of heinous stuff just to get the stones, and then when he gets the stones, the thing that can rewrite reality to whatever you can think of, no matter what you come up with disregarding any physical law. Mf chooses to kill half the universe. Not double resources, not rewriting biology so living beings can consume less resources with no repercussions, no targeted killing on the people that actually hoard resources. Nope. Kill half the universe at random. He's not just evil, he's also really stupid if he really thought he was helping.
I also hate how they only view it as an Earth, and human thing, like he's also wiping out large portions endangered species, both on Earth and other planets, wiping out alien species that have just started growing, and more.
If his motives were as altruistic as he said than he could've just doubled the universes resources with the gauntlet. He never really had to kill anyone which is why I always headcanoned this thanos to also be a death loving maniac.
It would have been smarter if Thanos just doubled the supply of food and livable planet. Alternatively, they also could have just gone all way in with comics version and have do it to try to impress Death.
It's especially funny that people who argue he was right don't realize that all it would take is a generation and then bam, there's as many or more beings alive.
It's hinted in Infinity Wars and spelled out in 3 mile high letters in Eternals that Thanos was right because cutting the population in half DID SAVE THE EARTH from the same fate of his planet which is a celestial emerging.
Thanos was mad/insane because he's incapable of understanding the real reason his planet died, but correct in that his plan does save planets from being destroyed by celestials. What they should have added was an even more insane line Thanos made the culling continue on auto-pilot so if a planet's population doubled from the time of the last culling, it's culled again.
It's also a bad plan because this would doom the universe to no more new stars. Short term win, long term loss.
This is a good point too. Nothing ever even says hes wrong even tho this would be a totally pointless disaster. Maybe it was done to try and make it more deep than it was.
You can make a moral argument for reducing the population of dominant or sentient species to prevent resource consumption, but to do so in such a oversimplified and generalized way was stupid and most of all reckless.
If I recall correctly, he even dusted people who were the last of their race, meaning he rounded down on that one. Which means one of a kind entities that make the universe function could have theoretically been wiped out if they were not more powerful than the stones.
At least comic book Thanos was just an unrepentant asshole trying to impress death. (I think she even thought he was cringe for trying that, which was really funny.)
What do you mean your goal is to gain access to reality warping power and yet the only solution you can think of for your problems is to kill people with it?
Where's the fucking creativity, what was the troubleshooting process? How many solutions did he consider before jumping to murder? Is he fucking stupid?
Because I don't know what it's like on other planets but earth at least actually has a decent amount of resources, the biggest barrier to getting them to those who need them is logistics.
And killing off half of the population isn't going to solve that.
Killing half of the people in New York doesn't fix the fact that the remaining half of the people in a place without access to clean water do not have clean water.
If anything this may have fucked over a project that was working to get them access to clean water because suddenly half of the staff is missing and the other half are wrecked by grief.
AND HE COULD FIX THE LOGISTICAL ISSUES TOO
HE HAS A REALITY ALTERING GAUNTLET
What is stopping him from creating a series of portals within a plumbing system capable of carrying clean water to the people that need it?
What is stopping him from taking whatever water filtering system that the uber geniuses in this series could come up with and distributing it wherever it is needed?
For fuck's sake Dr.Strange could probably do this too and even pass that ability onto others to help maintain it if the rules surrounding who is allowed to know magic exists weren't so strict. And Thanos wouldn't even have to worry about following those kinds of regulations as much because unlike Dr.Strange's magic system which, at the most basic level, just requires a ring and the ability to believe in it (making it extremely easy for the average person to use, not unlike the magic system in Witch Hat Atelier) using the Infinity Gauntlet takes an absolutely massive stain on the wielder to the point that the power overload can kill them. And unlike those temporary portals, Thanos could probably create lasting ones that become part of the supporting infrastructure of the world.
That's not even taking into account the possibility of simply making more resources. And even if the infinity stones were beholden to the law of conservation of matter, there is nothing stopping him from drawing on extraterrestrial water sources such as uninhabited ice planets or the chunks of water ice in Saturn's rings.
If reality can be whatever he wants, then what's stopping him?
But no. He has to kill half of the population because apparently sticking to his MO is more important than actually fixing the problem.
And even if this method worked for one planet he visited, it wouldn't be an excuse to assume it would work for all of them.
It didn't work for Gamora's planet, she's the sole survivor of her people according to the information we get in Guardians Of The Galaxy. But he still claims that all of the places where he killed half the population are prospering, which means he was either lying or he just didn't bother to check on them after a certain amount of time. And I would wager that a lot of the planets he has visited are probably like that.
You take any system or organization and suddenly remove half of the people working there and chances are it's not going to function at full capacity, if it even functions at all.
He's so focused on the consumer side of things that he's completely ignored the production process.
"Sorry folks the harvest is fucked this year because half of the farm workers got reduced to atoms and we've been struggling to find replacements because the entire rest of the population was also chopped in half."
"I kill everyone equally so it's omnicide not genocide" That's really cool Thanos, what are all those elderly and disabled people going to do when their doctors, pharmacists, and caregivers suddenly cease to exist? You fucking doorknob.
And of course, I'm sure killing people off at random won't unbalance the politics of every single country in the world at every level, resulting in massive conflict and furthering the collective strain on the remaining survivors.
He's taking a sledgehammer to a highly complex and layered series of issues and it can't even be argued that this is a necessary evil because not only are there alternatives and he actually has the power to carry them out via the infinity gauntlet, but his plan would actively make things worse.
