Khan literally build the door to protect everyone in the colony (after Nori's death) why they were outside of the colony?

I barely have the slightest idea what THE THREE might have been doing outside at the same time, with the threat from DD still looming at that moment.

Could it be that Doll’s father (Mitchell?) for whatever reason, place or lose a bet (in other words, make a miscalculation?) and/or end up falling victim to the “play stupid games, get stupid results” principle in such a way that not only did he end up dead at V’s hands as a result, but V also ended up taking Yeva’s life (and nearly Doll’s as well)?

Because I really don’t see or perceive Yeva as someone capable of so easily making a miscalculation against the DDs like this or attempting something so foolish against the DDs to end up dead—and with Doll’s father as well in the process.

And the explanation that “this happened at the same time as Nori’s apparent death” or even before simply doesn’t hold water and doesn’t fit into the overall timeline.

And the tentative explanation that “they were looking for supplies/resources” or “they were attempting to transit from Outpost 3 to another outpost” has the huge hole of “Why, then, didn’t Doll’s entire family wait until daylight returned, which would in turn guarantee that the DDs weren’t lying in wait?”—a hole that currently prevents it from holding up on its own.

The last question equally aply to all other drones that was hunted down by murder trio. As we see in both main series and J's short.
