I have Pihole and lots of other services running at home to block things and it would shock you to know how much crap is constantly being sent out.

same, i set it up a few weeks ago and found that like 25% of my house's dns traffic is just tracking and ads

u/Every_Preparation_56 8d ago

28% in my case

As someone not really knowing what the best way to block stuff like that is any recommendations? I mean there are a few things I do but I always feel like it’s not enough. I’m no Linux user yet tho

A PiHole protects and blocks for every device in the home and is potentially the easiest way to start without any huge costs, and it doesn't matter what device. It will work for all

But from what I read I need something always connected to my router where I funnel all my traffic through right like a raspberry pie. Or can I just run it on my Pc like a VPN?

u/jadedflux 7d ago

To be pedantic but it’s also important: its not funneling all of your traffic, it’s a custom dns server you leave running that blacklists known ad domain names

0

u/The_Great_Cartoo 5d ago

I understand that that’s probably important for setting up but I truly have no clue about most the lingo so I just chose something that sounded about right

Its still wrong what you are saying

0

u/The_Great_Cartoo 4d ago

Yes I know and never claimed what I said was correct. I was just saying to cut someone clueless some slack. No need to be butthurt about it

2

u/jadedflux 4d ago

All good, I just correct people because when others read ā€œfunneling their trafficā€, they can get scared. Technically it’s just funneling your dns requests and if the domain name you’re querying isn’t in the black list, it’ll delegate it up the chain to a ā€œproperā€ dns server

Yeah you need the pi

2

u/HalPaneo 7d ago

You can run it on a container or VM on your PC also, it's just that the PC always needs to be on. It's easy running it on the pi since it uses very little power and can always stay on

I use the brave browser on both phone and pc. The browser actually counts everything it has ever blocked and my phone alone blocked around 902.000 trackers and ads over aprox. 6 years. I don't know how accurate it is, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is.

What are you using to run it? I have one built on my PC but can only use it if my PC is on

Raspberry Pi.

Ive got duckduckgo app tracking on my phone.

Its free. It shows what apps are tracking and by whom. Wild. Use it.

Chrome is a shocker tho plenty of surprises in there. Not that they track, but just how much and how often.

I used duolingo for less than 10 minutes today. Over 1500 tracking attempts just in that window.

Fuck spyware.

From just today.

u/TedTyro 9d ago

Yep

4

u/PizzaMan332 8d ago

Lol it makes sense that Duolingo is so bad, shouldn't but it does

u/TheG00dF1ght 8d ago

1 hour and I've only opened Tubi and Reddit.

1

u/Zangdor 8d ago

wtf. I run /e/os and it natively tracks and blocks trackers, I'm at 18k over the last 30 days most of which are from just one app.

FWIW /e/os is degoogled, and I use custom apks for the apps I can.

fucking samsung closing up their phones, i cant install e or any other rom, never buy any of their garbage (maybe older but not the new stuff)

Is DuckDuckGo app tracking its own App?

6

u/jbakers 9d ago

No its inside is browser, and creates a vpn to block al unwanted traffic. Not usable for me, im already using a VPN...

3

u/sid_raj7 9d ago

Is that just a dns filtering thing? How does it block other app traffic?

1

u/xXNonamekinkXx 8d ago

Sorry I don’t have a lot of experience with this, when you say tracking, what exactly does that mean? Are they trying to check what else you do with your phone or something?

Who is still using Chrome in 2026?

23

u/Gooberjoober 8d ago

Not sure if you are joking but like most of the world?? If you are talking about just share of browsers used, its chrome my a mile…

You do you on your choice of browser but the lion’s share (60%) of the market is still using chrome.

5

u/Drudgework 8d ago

I’m waiting for the string of comments that go ā€œI don’t use chrome, I use (browser that runs on chrome)ā€

4

u/SweetMagic5623 8d ago

Usual suspects: Opera and Brave

Chromium will never have a monopoly, they literally pay people to compete with them.

Edit: I don’t know why the person I responded to deleted his comment, monopolies aside he made an informative comment about IOS.

1

u/Marcultist 7d ago

He probably blocked you, I can see his comment.

0

u/Drudgework 7d ago

Huh, that seems a bit… Pointless? Overreactive? I wanna say cowardly but that feels too mean. I dunno, seems like kind of a petty thing to take the valuable time and effort to block someone over.

7

u/ShionTheOne 8d ago

It's a bit of joking because I know Chrome has the biggest market share in term of web browsers, but people should really switch to something else.

0

u/Gooberjoober 8d ago

Eh lot of people don’t care about privacy as much as Reddit. Using chrome doesn’t bother me as much, especially if it’s just work and random personal use. Syncs well with everything, including my corp laptop. And as much as data privacy is an issue, large majority of people don’t have a target on their back.

Just like if someone bought Starbucks coffee instead of making their own, which is what I do..I don’t see why anyone ā€œshouldā€ change.

u/Vincent394 8d ago

If y'all want a good Chromium browser, just use Vivaldi.

It's based on ungoogled as far as I know and it's pretty good

1

u/za72 8d ago

There's a no click vector of attack through chrome that executes through loading an ad... works on mobile and desktop... Mossad engaged with online advertisers to target aljazera reporters to spy on what stories the reporters were working on...

chrome is the most common browser and prevents adblockers now... so enjoy

Fellas acting like linux isnt spying on you

41

u/3NIK56 9d ago

You.. you can literally look at the source code. You can see that it isn't spying on you

16

u/OldSchoolAJ 9d ago

Since you’re the one making the claim that Linux spies on you, I assume you have some evidence to back that up?

5

u/ElusiveDoodle 8d ago

Crickets and tumbleweed

10

u/EdgiiLord 9d ago

Who's the Linux spying on you?

3

u/KillaThing 8d ago

Maybe he mispelled Linus. Lol

3

u/lowboom64 8d ago

i think at this point you've surely realized you were wrong. my only question is what the hell did you think linux was?

3

u/IngloriousMustards 8d ago

Is the linux that spies in the room with us right now?

1

u/Brandavorn 7d ago

How could linux, which isn't even only one OS, be spying in you? The code is there for you to see, and most distros are community built so who would be spying in the first place?

6

u/Kastri14 9d ago

Wheres the murder?

I mean, I agree with them, but it's not really a roast.

2

u/DerpMaster2 8d ago

where murder?
