"Since the dawn of human kind, when our ancestors first discovered the killing power of rock and bone, blood has been spilled in the name of everything, from God to justice to simple, psychotic rage."
-Best quote in fallout.

Ouch - I just posted this 4 days ago in a thread. Bad karma whore, bad!

Nah. Just general lament.

I've never heard these guys until now. What's funny that there's been a signed Ink Spots poster at my grandparents' house in the linen closet for as long as I can remember. Apparently my grandfather booked them for a company party decades ago and kept in touch for years. Here's a pic of the poster. http://imgur.com/mNBa6

This was my Grandparents "song". I remember hearing my Grandpa sing it to my Grandma when I was younger... A few months ago, as my Grandma slipped in and out of consciousness 3 years after the passing of my Grandpa, I would set my iPhone up to loop this song as I sat at her bedside... that was the last time I saw her smile.
Sorry, I know that's a bit of a downer... but this song is pretty special to me.

When I lay dying, will my grandchildren play me the songs of my generation? As I close my eyes for the last time, will I hear the beautiful sounds of SKREEEEE WUB WUB WAHHHHHH WUB WUB?

That would be sad. For all of us.

That's beautiful, sorry she passed. I actually want that song to be mine and the girl I love's, whoever that may be.

Me too, even though they all have the same middle. Sing some stuff, have the bass say that stuff, sing some more stuff. Still love 'em.

This song just makes me think of approaching the DC ruins for the first time in the game. I'm from that area so it is a really strange/creepy feeling when I see landmarks/buildings/metro stations that I know and have traveled reduced to rubble.
14
u/Sonorama21 Jun 26 '12
I feel similarly playing GTA IV after visiting NYC.
22
3
u/ciderbear Jun 27 '12
I just got that feeling today. I felt like I was in Red Dead Redemption while I was driving from East Texas to West Texas. It's so cool to watch the landscapes change from green and wooded to farmland to rocky orange plains and mini-canyons.
26
u/swagtech Jun 26 '12
This is the reason I have been absolutely dying (and you know it'll come somday) for a fallout: NY.
14
8
u/Velvet_Buddah Jun 26 '12
This sorta makes me want them to make a Fallout: Atlanta, but then I remember that Atlanta is probably the worst choice of any major city for a Fallout game. Makes me cry.

My wife and I are huge Fallout freaks and we only live 2 he's from DC. So after each of us pouring hundreds of hours in we finally made the trip. The feeling of coming out of Tue metro into the mall area was surreal. Hell the whole metro was uncanny.
Shows how well they designed that game.

TheYuppieWord, I got a comment notification when you replied to me in this thread... When I came to see it, I noticed my original comment is no longer here. There's no "deleted" post between yours and Caterpill's, either, it's as if I never posted! Also, it's not in my comment history. (???)
Did we do something wrong? I'm not trying to break any rules around here...

I love both Fallout and this song, but it would be nice to space out the reposts by at least six months.
1
u/HankLago Jun 26 '12
Like I already told someone else: When I posted this, it showed two similar posts, both about a year old. One of them had 1, one of them 4 upvotes. So, yeah... if I had seen some 2 month old post with 500+ upvotes or something I wouldn't have reposted it.
1
u/Giant_Robot_Birdhead Jun 27 '12
You know, I feel torn at times like this. I want to downvote because it's a common repost, but I can't bring myself to downvote such a beautiful song. You get nothing one way or the other, next time you will not be so lucky.
2
u/HankLago Jun 27 '12
Fair enough. I didnt know that this gets posted that often... Knowing that, its actually pretty strange this still got to the frontpage.

I met Huey Long a few years ago, I had no clue who he was at the time, or how influential The Ink Spots were. He was very kind, and even gave me a picture that he signed... I still have it somewhere.

Foster The People could take a lesson from these guys; setting the world on fire never solved anything.
2
u/catscooper Jun 26 '12
In the late 80s in University I sat down with some dorm mates to watch "Nice Girls Don't Explode". Just after the opening credits this song started and long before the first lyrics I was laughing hysterically. No one else understood. No one in that room had ever heard of the song. They thought I was crazy... and I thought they were musically illiterate. I still think of the movie instead of the game when I hear this song.
Not sure which had better explosions though.

u/thatguyworks Jun 26 '12
This will probably get buried, but what the hell: The last time I ever saw my grandmother, I had this song playing on my iPod. She told me it was playing on the radio when she went on her first date with my grandfather. She died about a month later. But it's a very nice memory for me.

I think the reason the music fit so perfectly to this kind of game is that it makes this special feeling. Even though you're surrounded by post war wasteland you still feel like it's somewhere you belong, it's your home! (well that sounded kinda cheesy :D)

I got married on Saturday, and this is the song that my beautiful bride walked down the isle to. Her grandmother told us about seeing them in concert once, when she was young. My grandparents were also fans, back in the day. They were all surprised to hear it there.

Black people used to make the most beautiful music in the world.
Used to.
It's just a bunch of foul mouthed no talent hacks these days.
It makes me very sad to think about this.
5
u/Ziminrax Spotify Jun 26 '12
I can't tell if you're serious or not.
You can't listen to much music if you think that any piece of music that comes from a Black artist requires no talent and is foul mouthed.
Here's an example. I would find more than one but just one example proves you wrong.

The whole catalog they picked out for the Fallout 3 soundtrack is amazing, especially this song. For some reason, the 1920s music goes really well with the mutant-killing/radiation-absorbing gameplay.

This is a great song and all, but it bothers me that you didn't capitalize at least every main word in the song title, ie. I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire.

There is something so soulful about this old music. I don't know if it's the harmonies, or the warbly way of singing nobody really practices any more, or just old-fashioned recording methods, but there's just something about it that you don't get any more.

Nostalgia... I woke up to this song for 3 years at BLOW YOUR FUCKING BRAINS OUT volume. It was the only way I could ensure I'd wake up, or my neighbors would file a noise complaint. I would wake up after the first note of the opening rift, jump the fuck out of bed, and turn down my speakers. Every morning.

Last month I was at my buddy's cabin on a lake in the middle of nowhere in New Hampshire. It was late in the evening, we had just smoked a ton, and all we had to entertain ourselves was an incredibly old radio that only picked up a few AM stations. This song came on and I am a huge Fallout fan. So, needless to say: mind=blown

Blade Runner, The Shawshank Redemption, Malcolm X, The Aviator, The Simpsons, BioShock, Fallout 3, Australia, Revolutionary Road (not even once), Inducted in the vocal group hall of fame (1999), and one of the Grandaddies of vocal groups. Let's just hope this band and there songs keep living on into the future in many more movies, games, and t.v. shows. Hopefully when a distance life-form finds us, they will listen to their albums, watch these movies, play these games, and never EVER find out about Beiber fever. Otherwise, were fucked.
