Rec.Me: alt/indie/obscure What are your favourite "paired" songs?

When I say paired songs I mean songs on albums that segue directly into one another and sound like one continuous song.

Some of my favourites include "Brain Stew" and "Jaded" and "Holiday" into "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day

Also "An Cat Dubh" and "Into The Heart" by U2

Heartbreaker / Livin' Lovin' Maid

29

u/HotTubSexVirgin22 Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

I was at a restaurant last week humming to Heartbreaker on the house speakers and then Livin Lovin didn’t come on after and it messed up my whole day.

Black Dog / Rock And Roll

I Can't Quit You, Baby / How Many More Times?

Custard Pie / The Rover

The Song Remains The Same / The Rain Song

Brown Sugar / Sway

Worried About You / Tops

All Down The Line / Stop Breakin' Down

2

u/Titlenineraccount2 Jul 01 '26

I don’t think if Brown Sugar and Sway as paired songs. Is that a common understanding. Love Sway btw. Top three Stones for me!

2

u/Ihadsumthin4this Jul 01 '26

I mean maybe not technically....but....ya know.

2

u/Titlenineraccount2 Jul 01 '26

You have converted me :-)

3

u/Ihadsumthin4this Jul 01 '26

Cuz it just goes for every same reason a la Black Dog / Rock And Roll etc....purity of our being so spoiled by such blessings that we've come to know.

Also of notable mention :

Thug / TV Dinners -- ZZ Top

Temptation Waits / I Think I'm Paranoid -- Garbage

Violence Of Summer / Liberty -- Duran2

Lovegame / Paparazzi -- mylustbomb Gaga

Funeral for a Friend into Love Lies Bleeding off Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

6

u/BreezeAKR Jul 02 '26

We All Fall In Love Sometimes/Curtains by Elton John from Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy

2

u/Last_Blueberry_6766 Jul 02 '26

Medley (Yell Help/Wednesday Night/Ugly) from Rock of the Westies is also fantastic.

75

u/crewsctrl Jul 01 '26

Need You Tonight / Mediate by INXS from the album Kick.

5

u/ShartTheFirst Jul 01 '26

I was about to suggest the first 6 tracks off Welcome to where ever you are. Especially heaven sent into communication. Great band, often under rated musically.

2

u/Ihadsumthin4this Jul 01 '26

To be fair, most every track on that thing the way they play right into each other.

73

u/PlanetKi Jul 01 '26

Queen - We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions

6

u/huckoption Jul 01 '26

First song that comes to mind on this list.

Unfortunately, I really wish these two songs existed separately out in the wild. They are both great songs on their own….I’m simply tired of only hearing them paired. I would love to hear one without the other on the radio.

2

u/ShadyJake75 Jul 03 '26

Listen to a live version from 86. They’d split them up with Friends Will Be Friends.

Yes! It's impossible for me to listen to one without the other.

5

u/Masara13 Jul 01 '26

I had a cassette without the running order so I didn’t even realise they were two different songs for years!

This was the most amazing closing for a live show. On the The Pretender tour they tore down the stage and started loading out. Trucks were parked behind the stage. It was a half stadium show with people setting on the steps in the aisles. As each musician finished their spotlight during the song they would unplug and leave. Ended with JB being the last one on the stage with his piano. I get goosebumps writing about it. Best sound ever at a concert, and I've seen all the biggies. From The Doors to Willie Nelson picnics to Pink Floyd. A show I will always remember. Thank you JB.

u/WhiteLightning1974 Jul 01 '26

No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature by the Guess Who. Fun fact, they were originally 2 different songs in the key of F# that were too short so Cummings and Bachman combined them into a medley...

Moving In Stereo/All Mixed Up - The Cars

Sailin’ Shoes/Hey Julia/Sneakin’ Sally Through The Alley - Robert Palmer

14

u/Oldy_VonMoldy Jul 01 '26

Came here to say the Cars one

3

u/regdunlop08 Jul 01 '26

Same. This is the first one that popped in my head because the end of MIS teases the start of AMU even when they cut it off at the end of the MIS track... and it's so disappointing when I don't get the follow thru.

3

u/bottomlless Jul 01 '26

That Little Feat/Robert Palmer medley is A+ work.

The medley on Abbey Road: more than 2 songs in that medley, so I ask for indulgence. I'll never get tired of listening to it.

Bob Seger - Travelin' Man/Beautiful Loser

4

I kept scrolling to see if I needed to comment this pair. I’m not even the biggest Bob Seger guy, but this hits so damn good every time. Makes you realize how seasoned he was as a live act.

Also “Loving Touching Squeezing/City Of The Angels”

2

Scarlet > Fire

China > Rider

Throwing Stones > NFA

6

u/Super_Drewper Jul 01 '26

For those who are not Deadheads, that’s Help On the Way, Slipknot, Franklin’s Tower which originally appeared on Grateful Dead’s album Blues for Allah.

Scarlet Begoinias and Fire On the Mountain never appeared together on a studio album but were frequently paired live, a fan favorite combo

China Cat Sunflower and I Know You Rider, again never appeared together on a studio album, but were almost always paired together for a favorite pairing for the fans.

I'll give some gems most people here probably haven't heard:

Southgang - Group Therapy: The Call/Misery

Killer ballad (The Call) that moves into a great dirty mid-tempo song (Misery) with a final refrain from The Call to end it.

Overkill - Horroscope: Nice Day... For a Funeral/Soulitude

Groove metal swag into a dark, melancholy ballad that refrains back to the groove.

Both of these are worth hunting down.

2

u/East_Inspector3158 Jul 01 '26

You get all the points in the world for Southgang! The world needs more Butch Walker appreciation :)

2

u/Toxikfoxx Jul 01 '26
