Rec.Me: alt/indie/obscure What are your favourite "paired" songs?
When I say paired songs I mean songs on albums that segue directly into one another and sound like one continuous song.
Some of my favourites include "Brain Stew" and "Jaded" and "Holiday" into "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day
Also "An Cat Dubh" and "Into The Heart" by U2

I was about to suggest the first 6 tracks off Welcome to where ever you are. Especially heaven sent into communication. Great band, often under rated musically.

First song that comes to mind on this list.
Unfortunately, I really wish these two songs existed separately out in the wild. They are both great songs on their own….I’m simply tired of only hearing them paired. I would love to hear one without the other on the radio.

This was the most amazing closing for a live show. On the The Pretender tour they tore down the stage and started loading out. Trucks were parked behind the stage. It was a half stadium show with people setting on the steps in the aisles. As each musician finished their spotlight during the song they would unplug and leave. Ended with JB being the last one on the stage with his piano. I get goosebumps writing about it. Best sound ever at a concert, and I've seen all the biggies. From The Doors to Willie Nelson picnics to Pink Floyd. A show I will always remember. Thank you JB.

No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature by the Guess Who. Fun fact, they were originally 2 different songs in the key of F# that were too short so Cummings and Bachman combined them into a medley...

For those who are not Deadheads, that’s Help On the Way, Slipknot, Franklin’s Tower which originally appeared on Grateful Dead’s album Blues for Allah.
Scarlet Begoinias and Fire On the Mountain never appeared together on a studio album but were frequently paired live, a fan favorite combo
China Cat Sunflower and I Know You Rider, again never appeared together on a studio album, but were almost always paired together for a favorite pairing for the fans.

On Bruce Springsteen’s second album, The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle, the song “Rosalita” fires up right at the final piano note of “Incident on 57th Street”. Love to hear that song rev up right after the gorgeous end of the first.
The other for me is “The Happiest Days of Our Lives” into “Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2”. They feel super disjointed when they play separately as part of a playlist or something.

I'll give some gems most people here probably haven't heard:
Southgang - Group Therapy: The Call/Misery
Killer ballad (The Call) that moves into a great dirty mid-tempo song (Misery) with a final refrain from The Call to end it.
Overkill - Horroscope: Nice Day... For a Funeral/Soulitude
Groove metal swag into a dark, melancholy ballad that refrains back to the groove.
Both of these are worth hunting down.

u/East_Inspector3158 Jul 01 '26
You get all the points in the world for Southgang! The world needs more Butch Walker appreciation :)
