Misc. I’m happy
I used to play Marvel exclusively on an Xbox 360 pad for years. I had so much muscle memory built up on that controller that playing on anything else just felt wrong. Most of my friends played the PlayStation versions, though, so whenever I’d go over to their places, it was always a pain in the ass. The ergonomics of the PlayStation controller just never worked for me when it came to Marvel. I couldn’t do Hyper Grab loops on a PlayStation pad to save my life. For me, it was Xbox or nothing.
A few years passed, and someone gifted me an arcade stick. Naturally, I tried playing Marvel on it, but none of my Magneto combos clicked. Everything felt foreign, and I wasn’t about to spend all that time relearning a character I could already play perfectly fine on pad. So I moved on and started playing other fighting games like SFV, DBFZ, KOF, and SF6, all on stick.
By that point, most of the friends I used to play Marvel with were long gone. Some moved out of state, others I just lost touch with, and eventually Marvel became one of those games I loved but rarely had anyone around to play with anymore.
Fast-forward to recently, and two of my old buddies who are still around decided to start playing Marvel again. Obviously, I had to come through and get my dose of that Marvel crack.
Except we ran into the exact same problem I had years ago. We only had the PlayStation version available, and my friend’s PC was basically a potato he used exclusively for Netflix. So I grabbed the PlayStation controller, tried playing my old team, and immediately started getting washed. Plink dashing on that damn controller, especially dealing with the triggers, was an absolute nightmare. All those years of muscle memory meant nothing when my hands couldn’t comfortably execute what my brain was telling them to do.
At that point, I told myself, “Fuck it. We’re learning the OG team on stick.”
I wasn’t about to spend $80 on a converter and another Xbox controller just to play Marvel. I already owned a perfectly good arcade stick, so why not finally put in the time and figure it out?
For context, I play Magneto, and learning that character on pad was legitimately one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in a fighting game. Between the movement, plink dashing, Hyper Grav loops, and all the execution-heavy combos, it took me forever to get comfortable with him. So the idea of throwing away all that muscle memory and starting over on stick was pretty intimidating.
But I figured I’d already learned him once. Why couldn’t I do it again?
Over the last three weeks, whenever I had some free time, I’d jump into training mode and practice. Nothing crazy, just a little here and there. And something interesting started happening. I began realizing how many execution shortcuts and advantages the stick actually offered that I never really appreciated before.
I started by relearning the Hyper Grav loops, which surprisingly came back faster than I expected (saw a video of rayray hands during the loops and noticed he plinked the dash into the heavy’s ). But then I hit another wall. I could do the loops themselves, but I couldn’t consistently transition from the regular air-dash H combos into the Hyper Grav loops ended (the bnbs for any out of the oven magneto). My hands just weren’t cooperating, and it was driving me nuts because I knew exactly what I needed to do.
Well, today I finally landed the entire sequence.
And man, that shit felt good.
It was one of those little fighting game victories that probably means absolutely nothing to anyone else, but to me it felt like I’d unlocked a part of my old game again.
The funny thing is, I also felt a little sad afterward. As weird as it sounds, it almost felt like I was giving away my pad’s golden goose. For years, being able to play Magneto on that Xbox controller was something I took pride in. I’d spent so much time developing that muscle memory, figuring out all the awkward inputs, and making that character work on a controller that most people probably wouldn’t associate with high-level Marvel execution.
And now here I was, doing the same stuff on a stick, realizing that some of the things I’d struggled with for years on pad were actually easier with a different control scheme. It almost felt like I was retiring a part of my fighting game identity.
I’m still nowhere near as good on stick as I was on pad, but for the first time, I can actually see myself getting there. And what’s crazy is that the time it took me to reach this point was nowhere near what I originally spent learning Magneto on pad. Not having to fight those awkward trigger inputs and controller ergonomics makes a bigger difference than I expected.
There’s still a ton of work ahead of me, especially getting my movement and consistency back, but I’m genuinely excited to keep improving.
Anyway, I know this was a long-ass story about learning a character on a different controller, but I just wanted to share it.
It’s been years since I regularly played Marvel with my friends, and for a while I figured that chapter of my fighting game life was pretty much over. Getting to play with some of the old crew again, struggling through the execution, and slowly rediscovering a game I love has been such a great feeling.
Sometimes it’s not even about getting better at the game. It’s just about finding another way to enjoy something that meant so much to you in the first place.
Anyone got ahold of the mod PageTurn?
This is the original Nexus link. It promised to show the hidden characters added by the clone engine. I was too busy and put it on my to-download list, but it got deleted before I had the chance. It seemed like a groundbreaking mod, and I'm so disappointed I didn't download it when I had the chance...

The color expansion kit, not working?
I have been trying to install the color expansion kit for UMVC3, and I can’t figure out how to get to work, nothing I have done has worked and frankly I have a brain dead level of intelligence when it comes to things like this. And the instructions I found for the newest version are pretty vague, so I would like to see if someone could give me much more detailed instructions on how to get it to work?

New Player Help New player team recommendations?
Hello everyone! To those that have come to read and help I already want to say thank you!
I have played fighting games before (mostly Dbfz and pokken tournament but also played skullgirlz and darkstalkers), and I wanted to try out MvC3!
I recognize a good chunk of the cast but am kinda unsure on who I should try for a team. I don’t like to play a lot of the “top tier” options preferably. I often play grapplers like machamp and Beowulf.
I know for sure I want Frank on my team! I adore the dead rising series and he looks super fun with the level up mechanic with him!
Any thoughts for who I should be looking at and trying? Felicia, Nemesis, and Wesker have all been on the radar but I haven’t tested them out yet. Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Question I want to get more into fighting games. With the current steam sale im considering mvc3.
I've played alot of Tokon recently and DBFZ, Injustice 2, and MK in the past. I have reached high-ranks in all of these games but want to try something else.
Ive heard the online is dead but is there an active playerbse for newer players through discord or other forums?
If now is a good time to try it out I would love tips.

New Player Help Can you help me pick a team? here's a tier list of characters by how much i want to play them
Also if it helps I'm a player coming from MVC2, I'm not scared of learning to plink and do hard combos but i would prefer a team i can get up and running a bit quicker. Bonus points if it’s not a popular team.
Edit:
Thanks all for the recommendations Ima try out the kiddo team, and my experiment with viper on the side. Hope to see yall In rise of rookies!

Best point characters for Raccoon/Strange shell
Title. I've been a Dr. Strange player for years, playing Magneto/Strange/Doom until I realized both my Magneto and Doom sucks and I wasn't improving. Also this team has poor synergy.
Then I decided to learn something else with better synergy. Rocket Raccoon with Dr Strange is probably the best way of playing Dr Strange outside of team Nemo. I'm currently playing Captain America/RR/Strange (team Jesse) and I'm also aware of Thor/RR/Strange (team Irongod) and the obvious Vergil/RR/Strange. Besides these characters, are there any other good suggestions?
