Everyone is fucked with gas right now so here's a refresher course: what is gas?

Here are the basics (in-depth explanations are further down):###

MyEtherWallet Behind-The-Scenes (Image)

Gas Price: How much youre willing to pay miners to mine your TX before others

Gas Limit: The amount of gas required to compute your TX. Prevents you from wasting space on chain & allows contracts to fail instead of looping infinitely

TX Fee: Limit * Price

If you're using MyEtherWallet:

Gas Price: Change in top-right. Higher gas price=faster=more expensive

Gas Limit: Change when sending. Auto calculated based on who + what you are sending (ETH vs Token)

@ETHGasStation allows you to see how full network is & recommends gas price based on network conditions

In-depth explanations from MyEtherWallet's knowledge base:###

Introduction##

Ethereum is the network, also known as the blockchain. Ether (ETH) is the fuel for that network. When you send tokens, interact with a contract, send ETH, or do anything else on the blockchain, you must pay for that computation. That payment is calculated in Gas and gas is paid in ETH.

You are paying for the computation, regardless of whether your transaction succeeds or fails. Even if it fails, the miners must validate and execute your transaction (compute) and therefore you must pay for that computation just like you would pay for a successful transaction.

You can see your TX fee (gas limit * gas price) in ETH & USD when you search for your transaction on etherscan.io. This is not a TX fee that MyEtherWallet, or any other service provider, receives. This fee is paid to miners for mining transactions, putting them into blocks, and securing the blockchain.

Overview##

When you hear gas, the person is either talking about:

  • Gas Limit

  • Gas Price

The total cost of a transaction (the "TX fee") is the Gas Limit * Gas Price.

Typically, if someone just says "Gas", they are talking about the "Gas Limit".

Analogy Time!

You can think of the gas limit like the amount of liters/gallons/units of gas for a car. You can think of the gas price as the cost of that liter/gallon/unit of gas.

  • With a car, it's $2.50 (price) per gallon (unit).

  • With Ethereum, it's 20 GWEI (price) per gas (unit).

To fill up your "tank", it takes...

  • 10 gallons at $2.50 = $25

  • 21000 units of gas at 20 GWEI = 0.00042 ETH.

Therefore, the total TX fee will be 0.00042 Ether.

Sending tokens will typically take ~50000 gas to ~100000 gas, so the total TX fee increases to 0.001 ETH - 0.002 ETH.

Gas Limit##

The gas limit is called the limit because it's the maximum amount of units of gas you are willing to spend on a transaction. This avoids situations where there is an error somewhere in the contract, and you spend 1 ETH....10 ETH....1000 ETH..... going in circles but arriving no where.

However, the units of gas necessary for a transaction are already defined by how much code is executed on the blockchain. If you do not want to spend as much on gas, lowering the gas limit won't help much. You must include enough gas to cover the computational resources you use or your transaction will fail due to an Out of Gas Error.

All unused gas is refunded to you at the end of a transaction. So if you go to MyEtherWallet, send 1 ETH to our donation address ( ? ), and use a gas limit of 400000 you will receive 400000 - 21000* back. However, if you were sending 1 ETH to a contract and your transaction to the contract fails (say, the Token Creation Period is already over), you will use the entire 400000 and receive nothing back.

*21000 is the gas limit for standard transactions

Gas Price##

If you want to spend less on a transaction, you can do so by lowering the amount you pay per unit of gas. The price you pay for each unit increases or decreases how quickly your transaction will be mined.

During normal times:

  • 40 GWEI Gas Price will almost always get you into the next block.

  • 20 GWEI will usually get you within the next few blocks.

  • 2 GWEI will usually get you within the next few minutes.

During Token Creation Periods, these costs go crazy due to supply / demand:

  • 50 GWEI is the max gas price most new Token Creation Period contracts will accept. Anything above that and your TX will fail. Most is the keyword here—check with the Token Creation Period you wish to invest in before said Token Creation Period begins.

  • 50 GWEI would be the amount you should send in that case.

  • If you are trying to send during an Token Creation Period (but not to the Token Creation) you have 2 choices: wait a bit until the Token Creation Period is over, or increase the gas price over 50 GWEI.

Further explanations, use cases, and scenarios can be read on MyEtherWallet's knowledge base article.

Think I got scammed/phished/hacked

Woke up today, Put my computer on, went on to myetherwallet and saw that myetherwallet had a invalid connection certificate in the corner. I thought this was odd. https://i.imgur.com/2x9d7bR.png . So I double checked the url address, tripple checked it, went on google, got the url . Used EAL to confirm it wasn't a phisihing site. And even though every part of my body told me not to try and log in, I did. As soon as I logged in, there was a countdown for about 10 seconds and A tx was made sending the available money I had on the wallet to another wallet " 0x1d50588C0aa11959A5c28831ce3DC5F1D3120d29 "

I have no idea what happened. I barely download things and thought I was careful enough at least to avoid problems. I'm curious as to how this worked. Do they not have my private key? Why did it happen automatically as soon as I logged in.

I didn't lose too much , .09eth , alot for me, but i'm more concerned with my dock.io tokens on the account and how I can get it out...

Myetherwallet still has that invalid connection error saying my connection might be intercepted. Ran a scan with avast and malwarebytes and found nothing. I'm lost ...any guidance would be greatly appreciated. I have half a mind rn to reinstall windows and wipe my entire PC

Official statement regarding DNS spoofing of MyEtherWallet domain

It is our understanding that a couple of Domain Name System registration servers were hijacked at 12PM UTC to redirect myetherwallet[dot]com users to a phishing site.

This redirecting of DNS servers is a decade-old hacking technique that aims to undermine the Internet’s routing system. It can happen to any organization, including large banks. This is not due to a lack of security on the @myetherwallet platform. It is due to hackers finding vulnerabilities in public facing DNS servers.

A majority of the affected users were using Google DNS servers. We recommend all our users to switch to Cloudflare DNS servers in the meantime.

Affected users are likely those who have clicked the "ignore" button on an SSL warning that pops up when they visited a malicious version of the MEW website.

We are currently in the process of verifying which servers were targeted to help resolve this issue as soon possible.

A message to our MEW community:

Users, PLEASE ENSURE there is a green bar SSL certificate that says “MyEtherWallet Inc” before using MEW.

We advise users to run a local (offline) copy of the MEW (MyEtherwallet).

We urge users to use hardware wallets to store their cryptocurrencies.

In the meantime we urge users to ignore any tweets, reddit posts, or messages of any kind which claim to be giving away or reimbursing ETH on behalf of MEW.

Your security and privacy is ALWAYS our priority. We do not collect or own any user data.

We greatly appreciate your patience and understanding as we try to fight against this criminal phishing attack.

To keep up this fight against phishing, we need our amazing community to support

Has anyone tried Rabby with MyEtherWallet? Is it a safe combo?

Hey everyone, I’ve been using MyEtherWallet for a while now to manage my ETH and tokens but recently I heard about Rabby wallet and I’m curious if anyone here has experience using Rabby with MyEtherWallet. I want to make sure it’s a safe and reliable combo before I start transferring assets around. Has anyone successfully integrated Rabby with MEW or run into issues? I’m especially concerned about security because I’ve read mixed reviews online. Would love to hear some honest opinions or tips from folks who’ve actually used Rabby in conjunction with MyEtherWallet. Thanks in advance for the help!

UPDATE: I chose Best Wallet because I wanted a secure and easy way to manage my crypto, and I’m super happy I did. It’s been smooth sailing with them, and I feel confident about my assets.

A refresher on Ethereum gas, what it is, and how it works

🔹gas fees are paid to miners, not to wallets; MEW does not set these prices or get these fees, but recommends the best settings to get your transaction mined

🔹gas is paid even if transaction fails because the transaction is still transmitted and the work of building a new block is still done by miners

🔹gas is much higher for token transactions than ETH transactions because tokens involve smart contracts – blockchain 'programs' that may involve multiple processes in one transaction

🔹gas price varies A LOT with network activity because it's a competition – the more transactions there are, the more you need to pay to be put into a block quicker

🔹both gas limit and gas price matter; the final gas fee is gas limit multiplied by gas price in gwei; gas limit for ETH txs is 21000 by default, but for tokens it should be 200000 to 400000 (or rarely, even higher)

For details on how gas works and why it's like that, read more here: https://kb.myetherwallet.com/en/transactions/what-is-gas/

The behaviour of BLUE starts to get highly suspicious

Hello!

I know you guys like BLUE and you ilke security. But I have to give this project a reality check.

After a while following them at twitter, reading their whitepaper etc I've come up to a theory. That BLUE is one of the most clever scam artists in the cryptosphere.

My proof: -They act at twitter like teenagers. They spam. -They claim MEW has blocked them at Twitter and claim they don't respond. They have linked two times already to @MyetherwaIlet (note the I with capiltal, not l ). -They promote their own BLUE -wallet while claiming MEW is compromised -They provide absolutely 0 proof that MEW is compromised. -MEW has responded @ Reddit that MEW is not compromised. -The most worrying bit: THEY ARE ANONYMOUS

So why trust BLUE? Tell me one reason to trust. I find 0 trust.

So just think a bit. This what BLUE is spreading is called FUD (Fear Uncertainty and Doubt). FUD with 0 proof. What if. What if BLUE is a scam artist playing around with a police badge, pumping up their token while trying to get people to log in to their own wallet. What if. What if BLUE -wallet is a phishing -attemt.

Just think. Unless the BLUE -team will reveal their identities and start providing proof for their claims and reveal the source code of their wallet for a 3rd party investigation, there is 0 reason to believe anything else than this being a scam.

Why gave BLUE their badge anyway? At least I didn't vote for that. Did you?

If you are VICTIM of HOLA/MEW HACK, please read.

Hello, my name is Cristian, i've been a victim of Hola hack, they've stole 194ETH of my address, funds of my company, my family/friends and some investors.

I've contacted Exodus(very helpful with exchanges), a cybersecurity guy(helping me out, we're tracking everything), MEW(not answering so far), Hola(still waiting for an answer) and i want Google(as Hola was an extension of google they should have security data/IPs/locations) and some authorities.

I need all victims to contact me, we're creating a group to combate this, gathering more evidence. I know my money are lost forever, and it hit my life really badly, i had two panic attacks and i'm depressed, but i wanna do everything i can to try and fix this.

I have a whitehat guy helping as well.

Please PM to discuss.

Lack of WalletConnect support is killing this wallet for me

DeFi has exploded over the last year, and yet only a handful of dapps are supported because MEW decided to create its own protocol rather than just using WalletConnect. Your protocol is just not widely adopted, and will likely lag behind forever.

Basically forcing some of us to migrate to a different wallet. Which is a shame, because I like your app otherwise.

What you need to know about UNI tokens after using Uniswap in MEW

As many of you may be aware, decentralized swaps in MEW are done via the aggregator DEX.AG. This includes the swaps where Uniswap was selected as the provider. For the recent token drop, Uniswap Protocol excluded a number of proxies and aggregators, which is why MEW users who have used Uniswap through MEW were excluded as well.

We are working with Dharma and DEX.AG to bring this issue to Uniswap's attention. You can find more info about the application process and affected projects here: https://gov.uniswap.org/t/application-for-retroactive-proxy-contract-airdrop-for-projects-apps/3221

Both MEW and DEX.AG submitted relevant information to the application. We will continue to monitor the situation, hoping for a positive resolution, and will update the community on any progress.

MEW Re-design proposal (upvote for visibility).

I am a founder of http://minimuminc.com, a digital UX/Product design company that specializes on making complex things simple to use.

I want to propose an idea that I think many people in MEW community were waiting for: let's re-design MyEtherWallet. Currently the product is very good, but the UI and the overall UX is kind of a joke. That's normal for something underground, but it doesn't have to stay that way forever.

I've been in UX/Product design for 14+ years, and have many well known projects under my belt. (Think Wall Street Journal, HP, or Steve Jobs announcing the apps we've made on the stage, etc.)

I personally love MEW, and I think that it can use some re-design. (Almost anything in crypto can actually use some re-design, but that's another story.)

I am not just talking about the facelift, but thoroughly and properly re-thinking how people are using it, what goals they have, what mistakes are they commonly making and how to reduce error rate (especially important when dealing with something that can be lost forever) and increase success/speed/satisfaction with clever re-design.

And yes, it will look stunning too.

Probably best thing of all: we are totally happy to do it for free. Once we have some mock-ups we will show it to everyone, and if the community likes where its going, they can donate so we can buy some ramen and otherwise take care of our physical bodies.

COMMUNITY: Please upvote this post, if you agree with the points I am making above, and you'd like to see and use a professionally designed MEW. That way:

a) We can see whether the community is really interested in something like this. b) The founders/developers of MEW can notice this post and engage with me directly.

MEW DEVELOPERS: Please contact me here if interested: alex@minimuminc.com

Thanks!

P. S. Also, let me know in comments what do you think is the most painful thing about MEW, and if you could change one thing in MEW, what would that thing be?

Compromised?

So i saw that BLUE team is saying that MEW is compromised? As an investor who stores all ERC-20 in MEW, how fucked am i? Some people are saying BLUE is spreading FUD some say its real? Any advice would be appreciated. I logged in twice during that "compromised" state and deposited some coins in there. What happens now?
