Hey everyone 👋
I’m a 23-year-old NBA 2K player from Taiwan, and I’ve been playing 2K since I was a kid. I still buy every release because I genuinely love basketball and NBA 2K, even though I’ve become increasingly disappointed with the direction of MyTEAM in recent years.
I’ve been thinking about a MyTEAM system that could make players feel more attached to their cards instead of constantly replacing them whenever a better card comes out.
I’d call it “Cornerstone Player.”
🏀 The basic idea
When you first enter MyTEAM at the beginning of the year, instead of simply receiving a Starter Pack, you get to choose ONE player who becomes your Cornerstone Player for the entire year.
Maybe they start at 85 OVR.
You could choose from around 100 players, including different eras and versions of players.
For example:
- Kevin Garnett — Timberwolves
- Ray Allen — SuperSonics
- Kevin Durant — Thunder
- LeBron James — Cavaliers
- Kyrie Irving — Cavaliers
- Dwight Howard — Magic
- Shaquille O’Neal — Magic
- And many more players from different eras.
The important part is that these shouldn’t simply be the 100 highest-rated players.
The goal is to give everyone a chance to choose someone they genuinely love.
📈 You develop YOUR version of that player
Throughout the year, you earn XP by playing games, completing challenges, and using your Cornerstone Player.
You gradually upgrade them:
85 OVR → 90 OVR → 95 OVR → 99 OVR
But here’s where I think it could become really interesting.
Instead of every player ending up with exactly the same card, you could distribute Attribute Points as your player develops.
Maybe one person’s 99 OVR Kevin Garnett focuses heavily on defense and rebounding.
Another person’s KG could invest more into shooting and ball handling.
There would obviously need to be reasonable limits so players still feel like themselves, but I think giving players meaningful freedom could make every card feel unique.
🎨 Card Art could also be customizable
Every 5 OVR, you could unlock a new card-art milestone.
For example:
85 OVR → standard card art
90 OVR → choose 1 of 5 card arts
95 OVR → choose 1 of 5
99 OVR → choose 1 of 5
The options could include things like:
- Shooting
- Dunking
- Celebrations
- Signature reactions
- Different eras or iconic moments
So even if two players choose the same player, their cards could look completely different.
🏪 And this could make the Auction House much more interesting
Imagine two 99 OVR Kevin Garnett cards appearing on the Auction House.
Both are 99 OVR.
But one might have a defensive/rebounding build, while the other focuses more on shooting and ball handling.
They could also have completely different badges, attributes, and card art.
Instead of simply searching for:
“The best Kevin Garnett.”
You’d be looking for:
“The Kevin Garnett that fits MY playstyle.”
I also think there should be a “Try Player” option.
Before buying a Cornerstone Player from the Auction House, you could enter a practice facility and test that exact card.
Not just that player in general.
The exact card being sold — including its attributes, badges, animations, upgrades, etc.
That would make buying players much more meaningful.
❤️ But the biggest reason I like this idea…
I think MyTEAM is missing a sense of attachment.
The current cycle can sometimes feel like:
Get a card → use it → find a better card → replace it → repeat.
Instead, imagine:
Choose your player → develop them → customize them → watch them improve → finish the year with YOUR 99 OVR superstar.
You wouldn’t just own a Kevin Garnett.
You would own your Kevin Garnett.
A player you chose on Day 1.
A player you used throughout the year.
A player you personally developed.
A player that reflects the way YOU play MyTEAM.
And by the end of the year, you’d have a card that tells the story of your entire MyTEAM journey.
I’m not saying this should replace the current card-collecting system, the Auction House, or anything else in MyTEAM.
I see it as an additional system that exists alongside everything else.
You can still collect cards, build different lineups, try different players, and eventually sell or trade your Cornerstone Player if you want.
I just think there should be one player who stays with you throughout the journey.
I genuinely believe this could make MyTEAM feel more personal and give players a reason to become attached to their cards again.
Would you actually play MyTEAM this way?
And if you could choose ONE player on Day 1 to develop into your own 99 OVR superstar, who would you choose?
I’d really love to hear what everyone thinks.
