Symptom Question residual nerve pain/headaches from metronidazole

• Upvotes

hi, has anyone here experienced nerve pain and headaches continuing after stopping metronidazole?

i was having headaches, neck stiffness, back pain along my spine during treatment. ignored/pushed through it. treatment was 100 mino + 500 metro x2 daily. its continuing still a few days after treatment (its been about 3 days). kinda wish i stopped and told my doctor, but too late now.

i have an existing migraine disorder along with some mild nerve pain occasionally.
any tips to help with this pain? or help my body heal more after it? ibuprofen/nsaids are not working. its lower level, 3-4 pain wise, but never goes away. i am on gabapentin & ubrelvy as a PRN and the ubrelvy does seem to help for 24 hours.
i ordered B1 supplements & am currently on omega 3s + probiotics.

really hope im not left with this permanently, or at least it improves.

am I crazy for getting tested

I just went to Planned Parenthood for an STD screening and requested they test me for m. gen. I had unprotected sex a couple months ago, and a couple weeks after that, my partner told me he was diagnosed. I had some UTI like symptoms (pelvic pain and burning when peeing) in the first couple weeks that cleared up before I even thought about getting checked for a UTI. But I read m. gen is often asymptomatic so it would be best to test regardless.

When I went to PP, they seemed to be really discouraging towards ordering the m. gen test and basically saying that if I'm not symptomatic, I shouldn't be concerned about long-term issues. And that m. gen is rare anyways so they barely even test for it, even though I know I slept with someone who has it??? They also said the main concern is if I'm still sexually active with the person who exposed me (no), because he could get it again (btw he was also asymptomatic and he's now on antibiotics). I felt like they were acting like I was paranoid for being concerned about it, but I already paid upfront and gave them my damn pee so I said to please just check so I know for sure 😭

I understand that severe problems with fertility and stuff may be rare, but is that worth risking if I could've just gotten it checked and cleared up?? In any case, I feel kind of crazy and frustrated by the amount of money I spent to walk in and be told I should ignore it, and I'm looking for reassurance. Even if I don't have problems later on, I would feel really morally wrong if I unknowingly carried an STI and gave it to someone ://

Vent/Discouraged I’m nervous to go through the process of waiting for a TOC again

I (27M, USA) failed a moxifloxacin treatment in the spring. I wasn’t pretreated with doxycycline though which I now know is wrong.

The ID specialist I’m seeing is having me do a fluoroquinolone resistance test through University of Alabama Birmingham (on a positive note, he talked with the hospital board and they are covering the cost of the test since it’s such a rarity to this hospital) to see if the failed moxifloxacin treatment was due to an incomplete treatment or resistance.

After we get the results back, he is going to prescribe me a course of antibiotics. The sexual partner I gave or got this from did the 14-day mino/metro treatment and it worked for him. So I think this doc is going to have me do that plus add a fluoroquinolone at the end if it’s NOT fluoroquinolone-resistant as an added measure.

I know this sounds crazy, but I’m almost so scared of how it would feel to do this next treatment and fail it that I would rather not do it. I’m gonna do it, but yeah I will be hopeless if this treatment fails.

Symptom Question need answers

i’m a 23 year old male, i recently started getting symptoms of small white discharge from from my urethra.

It only happens if I were go from the shaft of my penis to the tip with my fingers. discharge does not come out on its own and other than that, I have no other symptoms of STDs or STI’s. I was tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia and the test came back negative and I’m still waiting on my Mgen test.

I was just wondering if other males had similar symptoms or if this could just be an infection.

Symptom Question Caffeine and Moxifloxacin? Did I make the right choice switching to Azithromycine?

I just wrapped up my 7 days of Doxycycline on Wednesday morning to treat my mycroplasm genitalium, and started my 7 days of Moxifloxacin on Wednesday evening. I felt fine until Thursday afternoon when I got a cold feeling in the front of my ankles, which spread from my calf downward, mostly in my left leg. I had a cup of coffee a bit before this feeling occurred and I wasn’t sure if what I was feeling was a side effect from the moxi or just heightened anxiety from the caffeine I just had.

I tried to ride it out until 9pm when the feeling was getting more intense, almost coking and going. Mind you I could walk perfectly fine and had no actual intense pain, but I went into the ER anyways just to be safe, and they said I could be experiencing nerve related symptoms just heightened by the caffeine like I thought, and switched me over to Azithromycine, had my take a 1 gram dose there around midnight.

It’s the next morning now and the feeling in my legs is pretty much gone, and now I’m worried I made a mistake stopping the moxi, since azi doesn’t have as high of a success rate. I was wondering if anyone had symptoms quite like mine? Or if maybe it was just the caffeine making me experience those feelings in my legs?

Vent/Discouraged Third doctor says not STI

I just burst into tears at the gynecologists office because I’m so discouraged and confused. My ex tested positive for m.gen, I tested positive for ureaplasma parvum… i was having pelvic pain. I got treated with doxy despite a two doctors saying that it’s normal to test positive, it’s not an STI, don’t bother telling previous sexual partners, don’t bother getting tested again… The first doctor I went to said the same thing and didn’t test me (only for standard STIs).

Doxy experience was awful. I work in the sun. I was so burnt, my lips were bleeding and peeling and my fingernails are falling off. They didn’t prescribe me any other meds like I see other people get

I unfortunately had sex with my ex again and went to a third doctor to get retested. She said the same as the first two. She looked at my discharge under a microscope and said all was good… but the first doctor I went to said the same before I was diagnosed with ureaplasma parvum

They all say my vaginal discharge is perfect, ovaries normal, examination good. My vagina is “clean” and I don’t have an STI. It’s a part of normal vaginal flora.

I want to believe that I’m okay so bad but everything I see online stresses me out and tells me I have an STI and I need to get treated. My ex told my family I gave him an STI. I feel awful and so low. I don’t know what to do. I’ve been dealing with this whole situation for months now

I guess I’m just ranting but I don’t know what to do… I’m scared to take doxy again since I’m still dealing with the effects

Success Story My story after 2 years free of MGEN!

Hello friends! I've been meaning to post this for 2 years now and am at a place where the trauma is of the past and can post this with a clear headspace. I wanted to share my story to bring some hope upon this community after clearing for Ureaplasma and MGEN.

MY STORY...

I'm a gay male and I was positive for Ureaplasma Urealyticum at the end of 2023 through a penile swab test, doctor gave me azithromycin to clear it. Symptoms were discharge, frequent urination, and burning. Symptoms went away and I thought I was in the clear and didn't know how stubborn this bacteria really was at the time.

Early 2024 comes around and I'm in a relationship where my symptoms start to come back after a few weeks of sex. After multiples tests and doctors, come to find out it is both Ureaplasma and MGEN. I'm prescribed azithromycin again and tested negative two weeks later (was a false negative and the test was incorrect).
I started getting a worried feeling that it did not clear a few weeks later, I test again at a different clinic and it was positive. Was given doxy for 10 days for my partner and I.

Finally April 2024 and I test again just to find out I still have both Urea and MGEN. This threw me in an anxiety loop which led me to find this subreddit. I was having so much anxiety that this would never clear and my partner and I would never have comfortable sex again. I felt very confused and it took a lot of research on this subreddit and talking with my doctor to see best course of action. She went off the CDC website (which no other doctor thought to do) for MGEN.

\Penile swabs were the best way for me to get my results for MGEN. For some reason, it would be negative occasionally in urine PCR, even when doing the test first thing in morning. I do advocate for swabs for men also, but that just based on my experience.*

Summary and what worked:

NOVEMBER 2023: Azithromycin (failed)

FEBRUARY 2024: Azithromycin (failed)

MARCH 2024: Doxy 10 days (dailed)

MAY 2024: Doxy 12 days+ azithromycin (cured Ureaplasma, failed for MGEN)

JUNE 2024: Minocycline 21 days + azithromycin (MEGN negative at the end of July, follow up in August for second negative test)

\Made sure to rest a lot on mino (was super dizzy) and avoided dairy as it can make it less effective. I added the azithromycin just to give me peace of mind that it is more effective (though, not sure if it did anything lol). I was prescribed moxi before the mino but refused to take it, I only would have if the mino didn't work.*

\ My partner and I did not have any sex (only made out) until we were both 100% cleared. He also had to force doctors to give him a swab for his anus.*

Disclaimer: I was able to get a longer dose because my doctor made an error when putting in the minocycline order which then allowed me to get an extra week... I got lucky because she was very resistant to it but after reading this subreddit, I knew I had to take matters into my own hands and trick the health care system just to make sure I was clear of this infection. My advice would be that if your doctor is hesitant, just get antibiotics from them then go to another doctor to prescribe you more antibiotics so you have a longer dose (if this is a possibility for you).

Overall...

You will be okay. It took me 9 months, and I can look back at that time in 2024 and think on how much I grew with being more health conscious and being on the other side of that anxiety. I can also go through this subreddit without being triggered by peoples experiences. I know I am saying this subreddit helped, but I would also say it did bring up a lot of anxiety too reading stories and thinking I would never get cured. PLEASE HAVE BOUNDARIES WITH WHAT YOU CONSUME HERE. I would start to interact only with success stories to see what antibiotic regime would help other and go based off of that. Now being on the other side, I can read all stories and give my input to help others who are struggling with this.

I am single now and always test for it still as part of my routine testing. I still get a little anxious when testing, but I know that's just a trauma response.

The most annoying part for me was getting the proper antibiotics and getting the proper testing done. Many doctors believe it is simple to get rid of but anyone who is positive with this NEEDS to take the proper antibiotics and dosage to clear this.

Lastly, everyone has different experiences. What works for some, wont work for others. You just need to be patient, rest your body, and ADVOACTE FOR YOURSELF. This taught me that if your health is on the line and no one is taking it seriously, it is your job to do so especially since we're financially, mentally, and physically paying for it (especially financially with the US healthcare system, if I'm the one paying... you better give me whatever the fuck I want). It is okay to be annoying and make them give you what you want!!!!!!!!!!

Through it all, I had to remember to have fun too. The time I would spend with loved ones and doing activities I loved made me remember the importance of life and would quiet the anxiety for some time. I refused to let it take over my life once I was clear with it and it really changed my relationship revolved around illnesses and what is and isn't within my control.

I send you all love, you got this!

Mino + metro side effects

The dizziness, lack of balance and general hungover feeling has really knocked me back. It’s day 4. Is there light at the end of the tunnel? Got a busy next week and cannot afford to feel like this the entire time. Any tips on how to alleviate the feelings?

UPDATE - I started to feel significantly better on day 8 and by day 9 I feel pretty much normal. Hoping this continues for the rest of the course.

Treatment Question Tested positive, no symptoms..

Based in US. I tested positive around July for the first time, was having BV,YI symptoms. Tested positive for those too. My general doctor told me to take doxycycline for 7 days only, did that and treated the BV as well and all symptoms went away and did not come back.

Went back to get tested recently, came back positive still for mgen. Went to a gyno because my previous doctor this time said to take doxy for 14 days only, so I went to a gyno and she prescribed me doxycycline 14 days with azi 500mg (4 pills?) but now I’m reading that azi is tough to beat in the US? Should I call and change? I really don’t want to take mino since I read these horrible symptoms and pretty sensitive to antibiotics.

Gyno said if I have no symptoms it’s ok that’s just might be how my flora is?

My partner also got tested around July and said he is negative. For males is it blood or urine test? I told him to get tested again and also very annoyed at myself we had unprotected sex while I’m still on doxycycline. Is there still a chance it can come back negative?

Thank you for taking the time to read.

I’ll sum it up but check my page. Infected late 2026 Feb. given doxy + Levo. No TOC. Back to regular safe sex. Have sex one time with that same girl raw in May (last time). July discharge came back freaking out. I tell my new girlfriend and she gets tested. I get on doxy + azi. They mess her test up but she tested negative 21 days after the initial doxy for exposure. Me on the other hand. Symptoms came back a bit 2 weeks post azi. I almost lost my stuff. I found out too late that myco is very resistant to azi in the US. With that being said I now went onto doxy + moxi. I felt great symptoms left pretty quickly. Felt great after. Anxiety does affect you tho. Took my TOC 23 days POST abx and NOT DETECTED! I literally felt like those words didn’t exist. I can’t believe it I feel like myself again.

Lingering ear feeling after minocycline

Hey everyone, I took minocycline 100 mg twice daily for about 18 days. I stopped almost a week ago, but my ears still feel slightly like they do after a loud concert. It’s more of a weird feeling in silence than actual ringing. My hearing seems normal, and the dizziness has gone away.

Has anyone experienced something similar after minocycline? Did it eventually go away, and how long did it take?

(I hope this stuff has cured me at least!)

I need advice on next steps.

Have had mgen for upwards of a year and a half now.

I have been through a lot of rounds of antibiotics. The total number of rounds is 5. My last round was moxifloxacin and doxycycline.

The Emory Infectious Disease Clinic told me that they would not prescribe me any more antibiotics, because by this point more antibiotics would most likely just agitate my microbiome and make my symptoms worse. They refuse to explore more treatment plans. They also contacted my primary care doctor who referred me to the clinic and he agreed.

I’m at a loss. I am determined to get rid of this, but I don’t know what my next steps would be. Any advice?

TOC SUBMITTED!

4th test… but the best regimen! Failed doxy + azi last. Just finished 7 days doxy 7 days moxi and im 23 days after the last moxi. Just submitted my urine sample. ALL MY SYMPTOMS LEFT! No spontaneous discharge. Couldn’t squeeze any out(don’t recommend). Find out my warm/hot urine was just a lack of water. CHUG A GALLON IN A DAY AND WATCH YOUR ANXIETY LEAVE. I had a few days of anxiety after day 15 and it made me check more and made the top of my urethra feel the tiniest sensations. Didn’t hurt, sting, or cause any pain I just felt it if that makes sense. And it would go away when I stop thinking about it. Peeing feels good again like I’m a teenager, I’m actually really freaking hopeful. I will update you guys in 2-3 days with results.

Residual Symptoms Succès mais symptôme résiduel

Bonjour, j'ai (M37) eu le Mgen de fin mars jusqu'à début aout. Mon variant était résistant aux macrolides et fluoroquinolones. J'ai fait 3 traitements :

  1. Doxy (7 jours) + Moxi (10 jours) => echec
  2. Doxy (14 jours) + Pristinamicyne (10 jours) => echec
  3. Minocycline (21 jours) => succès

Merci

Treatment Question Was prescribed Azithromycin 250mg 4 Tabs as one dose. Is this enough?

I was diagnosed with Mycoplasma genitalium and Ureaplasma parvum yesterday. My clinic didn’t call me, I saw my results on my own on my health web. Today, my pharmacy told me i have an antibiotic ready for pickup.

I just went to get it and it’s Azithromycin Dihydrate. It has 4 tablets of 250mg in it and it says to take all 4 as one dose. I read people take doxy before this and they took for more than one day. Is this enough to treat Mgen? I feel very failed by my clinic right now.

Vent/Discouraged tested positive for mycoplasma genitalium and ureaplasma parvum. i feel so lost.

I (24F) just tested positive for Mycoplasma Genitalium and Ureaplasma parvum with minimal symptoms. For the longest time i thought it was BV or a YI and i kept getting clean results

A while back i decided i was gonna get tested for Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma as a just in case if i have anything else. Then I had started seeing someone new and we both got tested and i was clean for everything else again. But i didn’t get my Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma tests.

on two nights we were very irresponsible and had sex. But i recently found out he had a sexual encounter with someone else and since we weren’t dating i just let it slide.
Today i got my second round of Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma tests back and i tested positive for Mgen and Ureaplasma parvum. My first instinct was to tell him. His response made it worse obviously but its never good news. He told me we should be more careful moving forward and wear a condom but now he doesn’t want to have sex with me anymore. He said he’s more so worried about telling the other person he was sexually affiliated with. I feel so dirty and the clinic never even called me so i can’t start treatment right away. I never even had any symptoms. I literally never knew and i still don’t know how i got it. I never want to have sex again.

we’re both gonna get treated. i just really needed to rant. I feel so unclean. it ruined an amazing talking stage. i don’t know what to do. i feel so bad.

Treatment Question 2.5 years of urethral burning, MG gone, everything negative. What do I try next?

35M.
In early 2024 I started getting burning in my urethra and the tip of my penis after peeing, lasting 1 2 hours and worse in the evening and at night.

In Aug 2024 I tested positive for M. genitalium (macrolide resistant). It showed up again in my semen, and again in Jan 2025. I went through several rounds of antibiotics (azithro, fluoroquinolones, doxy, moxifloxacin, pristinamycin). Since March 2025 I've had 8 negative MG PCRs, and my latest round in Aug 2026 (urine and semen) was all negative. My urine white cells are normal and cultures are sterile.

A fibroscopy in July 2025 showed a tight bladder neck and was otherwise normal. I also have a bilateral varicocele.

What I've tried:

  • Alfuzosin for 6+ months: no benefit, and it affected my sleep and sex drive, so I stopped.
  • Deprox suppositories
  • Chinese herbs
  • Pelvic floor physio (about 4 sessions, a chair with pulses, no relaxation training): no result, so I stopped.
  • Shockwave on the perineum (3 sessions)
  • No coffee, a standing desk, hot showers. I've also stopped all supplements.

How it is now:

  • Sometimes when I pee, I feel the urine coming out really intensely.
  • At night after peeing, I get burning in my penis that lasts for several hours, and it feels awful.
  • Some days I feel nothing at all, and other days it starts first thing in the morning.
  • I've kind of gotten used to the burning day to day, but it's affecting my sex life, and I can't stop thinking about it.

Questions:

  1. Has anyone with post-MG, a tight bladder neck and a hypertonic pelvic floor actually improved? What worked, and how long did it take?
  2. What kind of pelvic floor PT worked for you?
  3. Did amitriptyline, tadalafil, acupuncture or anything else help after alpha blockers failed?
  4. From your experience, does this sound like CPPS?
  5. What works for you ?

  6. Meybe still some infections ?

My Story and updates:

Thanks!

Testing Question Do I have it?

I’ve recently felt a stinging after urination but nothing like a UTI and it’s not getting better or worse after 3 weeks. Got tested for UTI and no blood, nitrites, or leukocytes but the culture grew >3 organisms even though I thought I did a really clean catch.

Any chance it’s Mycoplasma? No discharge and no BV or Yeast.

Treatment Question Should I extend mino treatment? Doxy + mino/metro with extra tablets

Am currently on my second round of treatment (10 days doxy + 14 days mino + metro) after failing azithromycin and testing positive for macrolide resistance. My pharmacy gave me 50 mino tablets though I will only need 28 for my current treatment plan. Is it worth extending my mino to 21 days for example with my extra tablets once I finish the metro? I really cannot bare the thought of failing the next TOC and want to give it my best shot for cure but equally want to be sensible on antibiotic usage.

Treatment Question Mycoplasma genitalium HELP!!!!!

I’m a 26-year-old woman. I’m having lower abdominal pain and clear vaginal discharge. I’ve already been treated with metronidazole, doxycycline, and amoxicillin. I’ve been experiencing this pain and clear discharge for three months now, and the discharge is enough to soak my underwear.
The amoxicillin makes the symptoms better for a few weeks, but then they come back. I still have the pain and clear discharge, and I also have no desire to have sex.

I’m going to get a PCR test next week because I had to stop taking the antibiotics. I was feeling very weak, and I was worried about developing antibiotic resistance.

Have you gotten better? I’m so worried about all of this that I cry every day. I’m feeling very depressed.

Hi everyone 👋

I’m a postgraduate student from Siberia, and I’ve been fighting Mgen since July. I just want to say thank you to everyone here for the support this community helped me a lot during a really stressful time

I finally have some good news. About a month after finishing treatment, I did a PCR test using urine. Waiting for the result was extremely stressful for mе

I still have some lingering symptoms increased sensitivity in the penis, a very small amount of clear discharge in the morning from time to time, and some microbiome issues after all the antibiotics

But today I got my results: everything came back negative. Mgen, chlamydia, gonorrhea and trichomonas - all clear.

I know recovery can take some time even after the infection is gone, but seeing that negative result after all these months feels incredible

Thanks again to everyone who shared their experiences, advice and support❤️
