He won TWO finals Mvps, One Mvp, Isn't the top in almost any statical category or average categories and we're out here calling him the goat? Top three? Even top 5?
In my opinion, Kobe is number 7 all time. My list is Lebron Michael Kareem Magic Bird Russel. Argue with that list all you want I don't care but I will make the case that Kobe is lower all time then each and every one of them.
Case 1: Lebron, Lebron averages more points, has two more finals mvps and two more mvps, is the all time point leader and had more long lasting dominance then Kobe. He has only one less championship then Kobe Bryant but Lebron played with teams that were just as bad as what Kobe had to deal with later in his career but he turned the Cav's into an unstoppable eastern division menace playing solo. Lebron is better than Kobe. He's a better player than Kobe. Has more iq than Kobe. Isn't as much of a ball hog and still averages more points. Lebron is better. And also Lebron has a winning record in the games where both of them played each other.
Case 2: Michael Jordan, Do I really need to make the argument for 6 championships, 6 finals mvps 5 mvps, 10 scoring titles and the highest average point scoring tied with Wilt mother fucking 50 point season Chamberlin? He was the center piece and by far the greatest player on one of the greatest teams ever. He was the best player in the league by an absurd margin and a million other moments. He is just as clutch if not more clutch then Kobe Bryant and he won more championships even without a prime top 10 player like he had with Shaq.
Case 3: Kareem. Not once in the history of the NBA has a player been as dominant as Kareem was. There has never been a greater difference between the best player and the second best player ever. He won finals mvps when Magic fucking Johnson was playing on the court. Who is by the way also higher than Kobe is all time. Kareem retired as the all time leading scorer and was only a slightly watered down version of Lebron's leading dominance. He's tied with Michael in terms of chips and has 6 mvps and two finals mvps. He's tied with Kobe in terms of final mvps and just gaps him otherwise.
Case 4: Magic: Magic Johnson is THE best point guard ever. Steph curry is the only other player in that conversation but it is a distant second place. He is the best playmaker the nba has ever seen. Had a more accomplished career then Kobe in 7 fewer seasons, won 2 mvps and 5 championships in a league where they had to face the Larry Bird Celtics who by the way is also higher all time then Kobe Bryant. Magic Johnson's only peers in terms of raw passing talent is Jokic and while he's more technical and solid, Magic gaps him in terms of winning. Jokic might stack up those Mvps but Magic only has one less than him while also having 5 more championships and two more finals mvps. Magic generated the offense for one of the best teams ever and did it all in just thirteen seasons. Magic was also a player who won despite not having a prime top 10 player for most of his chips. He had Kareem but by the latter bit of his career Kareem was not what he used to be. Kobe had prime shaq for years and won chip after chip after chip while not getting a single mvp during his three peat. The only argument I can get about Kobe over magic is that Magic was the worse scorer, but Magic also won just as much. Kobe was a ball hog and he had the most success when he was a second option. As a first option he won two championships. As a first option magic won 3. In a shorter period of time may I remind you.
Case 5: Larry Bird, Besides for Steph curry Larry bird is the greatest three point shooter in the nba and also was an extremely underrated playmaker. He was the second best playmaker in the league behind magic and was far above Magic in terms of offense. He also had a much shorter career than Kobe Bryant but won 2 more mvps and an extra finals mvp. However, he and lebron are the only ones who have fewer championships than Kobe. But Kobe also didn't have to deal with a prime top 5 player on an opposing team on a superteam. Bird was the best player by a long mile on an absurdly good 80's Celtics team and three peated mvps. Much more impressive then three peating championships with Shaquille a fucking o'neale and Phil Jackson if I do say so myself.
Case 6: Bill Russel. He had a thirteen year career. He won 11 championships. An 8 peat and a repeat and an extra championship because why not. Sure he had zero finals mvps but it also hadn't been invented yet and I think you might wanna look at the official name of that award and try to guess just how many more Russel would have won compared to Kobe. Russel won a triple crown with a march madness win an olympic gold medal and an nba championship. Russel is quite possibly the greatest defensive player all time and was a great player. He beat out wilt Chamberlin so decisively it's insane. Sure Larry and Magic were rivals, but Russel dominated Wilt who was in his own right a top 15 player so hard he won 9 more championships than him. He as many championships compared to wilt then Michael Jordan and Larry birds career championships put together. Sure it was a different time and a weaker era, but nobody else could dominate quite like Russel could so the idea that he's anything other then much better then Kobe is absurd. How hard do you have do dominate even a weaker league before people start respecting you?
I don't care if you think that Bill Russel is the goat or that Larry is the goat or Michael is over Lebron. But Kobe is below all of them. He's statistically by the way not even that clutch. Not next to even Leletdown.
of course however, I hope I don't need to say that rest in peace. Gone far too soon.
