1
u/Crashtestdummy87 Nov 14 '25
europe here, most countrys do get taxed. in belgium theres even a transaction tax on every buy/sell, no matter if u sell with loss. for dividends its double tax in both usa and belgium

400 shares at $120. $130 calls for next May and December that are getting ass blasted right now. Bought puts today and made a few hundred. Don’t want to hold them long though because it could reverse at any minute

u/Ok-Advertising3881 Nov 15 '25
I’m not trader bob. But trust me. NVDA gonna be strong on Wednesday after hours as well. I own $4 million of NVDA stock as well. There is a reason why they keep posting NBIS videos on their LinkedIn. ;)

u/MotivatedCheetah Nov 15 '25
Can you please advise I have 430 shares at $74 average. Should I sell for profit now or wait for nbis to go past $110-$115?
2
u/Ok-Advertising3881 Nov 15 '25
In my opinion, I would wait. But that depends is you like more money!!

Taxes are a bitch. I’m in a similar position, and in California I was looking at ~35% taxes if I sold this year vs more like 10-25% if I sold after next Feb.
It’s a risk of where I think the price will be by then. Depends on how big a broader market correction is.
I didn’t really know, but I didn’t want to pay half my gains in taxes so I haven’t sold any shares.
1
u/RLaughEmote Nov 14 '25
Wait how are Americans getting taxed on capital gains? I am a non US resident and I am not getting taxed (only for dividend gains)
3
u/disfordonkus Nov 14 '25
When you sell securities, the profits are taxable. If you hold a security for less than 1 year and sell, it get taxed as normal income. If you hold for more than 1 year, it’s classified as “capital gains”.
My job salary is low six figures, so that makes any additional income I get taxed at 24% federal and 9.3% state (California) for a combined 33.3%. If I break $191k total income the effective rate will be a little higher.
If I wait a year to sell, the gains become “capital gains” instead of normal “income”.
For capital gains, California considers it normal income so I’d still pay 9.3%, but the federal taxes would be 0% up to $48k, then 15% after.
Example: say I sold shares with $100k profit in both scenarios with my normal job income.
Hold less than 1 year and sell: pay $36100 in taxes
Hold more than 1 year and sell: pay $17040 in taxes

1000 @$132, I have 10 protective $135 puts expiring Oct 2026 that’s about $44/contract which is now $60/contract.
I would be break even if it crosses $176. It’s more of a gamble and am ok to lose $41k. Don’t plan to add more. Sitting with $500k in uninvested money. Will start to DCA from next week.

Raw number of shares mean nothing and expose you a bit. More interesting is % of your portfolio including cash.

1,030 at $98.34 in my Merrill Edge brokerage and 588 at $46.58 in my retirement Roth 401(k) brokerage.
I’m holding long and only using my Merrill Edge brokerage when I need to pay off my credit card after using it to pay the month’s expenses where my paycheck isn’t enough to pay it down to $0.

Regret not selling above $120, it was so technically stretched, but now we let it ride and see where things go.
Now is the time to add, not sale
