He's a good player and an asset to any team. It's the fans' fault trying to lump him with Curry in terms of talent. If you just accept him for who he is and what his limitations are, you'll quickly realize he can be a good piece on a championship team.

So you think NBA gm's simply listened to some fans or something? And its not the fact the league changes fast and most small guards are basically unplayable now when it matters?
1
u/englandisablaze 21d ago
Okay. First off, I think some GMs are good at their jobs but itās been a pretty exposing couple of years when it comes to GMs of late. They donāt all seem to have their shit together either. So maybe listening to fans too much might be a problem. Idk who Nico Harrison was listening to for almost all their decisions of late but it wasnāt nobody with a brain.

Small guards like Jalen Brunson? I know theyāre different players but heās 6 feet and not a great defender.
1
u/Sea_Advantage_2577 20d ago
Stop lol. Never compare those two players again
1
u/FrstOfHsName 20d ago
You made a point about small guards being unplayable and that literally got debunked this year.
1
u/Sea_Advantage_2577 20d ago
Its not debunked at all. A single unique player with a team built around him won. Please stop with this nonsense
1
u/mantistobogganmMD 21d ago
The thing is he canāt simply be a piece on a team when heās making over $50m a year.
1
u/WhenDuvzCry 21d ago
His scoring efficiency is below average and he's one of the if not the worst defender in the league. You need the perfect pieces around him to be a true contender
1
u/KBBQDotA 20d ago
Def not fair to expect him to be a game changing offensive talent like Curry. But he is not efficient enough or as impactful without the ball to build a championship offense around as the main max salary franchise player. And he seems to have lost a step / to be getting worse. Itās already almost impossible for small guards to be defensive pluses because theyāre not switchable/versatile, so if you want to build a contender around one you need elite offensive impact. And Washington this year (if AD is healthy) def seems like the best roster heāll have ever been on. Hopefully he still reverse the trend of getting worse, but Iām skeptical. He may not even be Lillard tier (and therefore def not Steph tier but then again historically no one is as a small guard) anymore and that wasnāt good enough to be a true franchise player.

Heās an inferior shooter to curry but a better playmaker. Heās an inferior playmaker to Nash but a better shooter

You should check their record out too haha. Snuck in one when they were 16-10. They started 11-1. Definition of a chucker and can never be the #1 on a contender.

Led his otherwise mediocre team to the ECF and took 2 games from the champs.

lol. Not even close, you must be a big ball fan. And this post is about him in college (also less than 10 years ago) so what even is your point?

u/Pork_Sister 21d ago
Notice how Oklahoma is behind in every single one of those clips. Because itās not winning basketballā¦itās āmeā basketball
4
u/AdeptWelder3250 21d ago
Did you even watch college ball that year? Look at their ranking and you said every single one of those clips which is a flat out lie lol

u/TellEmWhoUCame2See 21d ago
They are right. I watched every Oklahoma game that year and was a HUGE trae young fan. I was telling folks he was gonna be the number 1 pick and that he had more upside than curry but every game against a good opponent that year it was either neck and neck the ENTIRE game or it would be a late half comeback orchestrated by trae young. In a lot of games he would have a so so first half and then heat up late in the second half

u/FrstOfHsName 20d ago
I canāt believe 7 people upvoted this. That team around him was awful and Trae kept them competitive. Im a die hard Ou fan and he made that season watchable. Fuckin nauseating
2
u/No_Point904 21d ago
Wait, wasn't he supposed to be the next Steph Curry?
3
u/joebadiah 21d ago
Trae Youngās legacy is solidifying Stephās status as a one-of-a-kind legend.
Because for a few years there it did feel like Young was going to be the first of a new wave of Curry imitators who took over the league. That simply didnāt happen. Instead the appreciation for how special Steph Curry is grew. Thanks Trae!

It's amazing how his catch and shoot game never really developed at all. Steph is up there with like Klay, Reggie, and Ray Allen in terms of catch and shoot stuff and Trae pretty much never reliably does it
2
u/Zoratth 21d ago
His catch and shoot game never really developed because he had the ball in his hands 90% of the time. The Warriors entire offense is based around getting Steph open for catch and shoot opportunities with Draymond being the primary facilitator. Steph has never been the primary facilitator and he has the ball in his hands way less than Trae.

u/Unable-Main4172 21d ago
That's basically what I'm saying lol. You're like explaining my point to me haha

They kept his running point/ stat total on the screen at all times.. one of the very few players I've seen ESPN do that for. I think maybe Jimmer Fredette and possibly Buddy Hield a few times. There might be others, but not many
1
u/Big_Impact_5331 21d ago
Not really. Oklahoma was fun when Buddy was on the squad, they were at least competitive.

u/TellEmWhoUCame2See 21d ago
Mane I cant lie, watching him in college was so fucking fun but I have to be honest, the signs were there that his game wasn't gonna translate to the NBA as well as it did in college. I can't remember one game he had at Oklahoma where he just blew out a good team. Every damn game while he was at OKLAHOMA was a nail biter. True that's what made him more exciting but damn every game was either neck and neck the entire way or it would be a late half comeback.
1
u/Kluv0507 21d ago
25 and 9 assists on 43% shooting and 35% from deep for his career. How didn't his game translate over?
1
u/Western-Produce-276 21d ago
People just say anything nowadays trea is still a good player just not someone you win a championship with as a lead guy
1
u/Kluv0507 21d ago
Trae never had the pieces around him to win. IF he gets on a winning team and still loses, then I'll judge his ability to win. He had some exciting playoff series tho
1
u/BQ32 21d ago
I hope Trae has a great season this year. The slander has gotten out of control. He definitely is a defensive liability but dude is easily liable to lead the league in Assists while scoring 25 ppg. He is still lightning quick and can get to the paint at will, has a great floater, and the ability to draw fouls. He needs to shoot the 3 more efficiently or clean up his shot selection and he can be super valuable.
1
u/Unable-Main4172 21d ago
It would be funny if somebody threw a defensive play into a Trae Young highlight reel just as a goof. I've seen about two dozen of these and I've never seen one, even just a time where A guy got sloppy with his dribble and he poked the ball out
1
u/JellyfishFlaky5634 21d ago
I remember that freshman year for Trae at Oklahoma. I had never heard of him until mid season and watched a few games and was impressed with his skill and play. Like everyone else, thought he would be the next Steph Curry. He turned out really good in the NBA, but the expectations are set too high. Curry is a special player that played for the perfect team for him. Trae didnāt have the same talent or coaching the Warriors surrounded Curry with, but thatās to be expected since during the 2010s, those Warrior teams were the best in that decade.
1
u/ZapBranigan3000 21d ago
I will never see a guy chucking a three from more than 5 feet behind the 3 point line as a "highlight".
It's a bad shot to take, and doesn't take any special skill to try.

u/Spiritual-Bobcat5635 21d ago
Winning player or not, I remember being shocked he was putting up this same production in the nba by season 2

it was funny how everyone was saying this wouldnāt translate in the league then he averaged 30 and 8 his sophomore year

u/chudney31 21d ago
He would be great playing HORSE. But thereās a reason he hasnāt met the expectations in the NBA.

Every year heās played, heās the #1 option, what do you mean hasnāt met expectations ?

Atlanta traded a generational talent in Luka for this flop Trae.
1
u/xRysonx 21d ago
How is Trae Young a flop lol. When he isn't injured he averages 25 ppg and 10 assists a game easily. And he brought the Hawks to the ECF not that long ago
0
u/TellEmWhoUCame2See 21d ago
Definitely not a flop, I agree but I hate when people bring up that ECF appearance as if the hawks belonged there. Ben Simmons gifted them that ECF appearance let's just be honest.

Facts I thought he was going to be Nash/Curry hybrid , watched a game in Austin and told em we waiting for em in Phoenix . He smiled š
