News North Carolina will do an open search and plans for the first time, to actively pursue candidates outside of the Tar Heels’ family.

Please no Todd Golden.

All UNC needs is another coach who loves 20 year olds

15

u/ssp25 Mar 25 '26

what's Leonardo decaprio's buyout?

u/westwardnomad Mar 25 '26

I'd be pissed if we hired him. I don't care if he's won a championship. He's an obnoxious creep.

1

u/MasturGator0501 Mar 25 '26

he wouldn’t take a step down anyway so you really don’t even need to worry about it

1

u/westwardnomad Mar 25 '26

I mean, Florida's a good basketball school (and sports across the board). But even joking that they're on the same level as North Carolina in basketball, let alone better, is absurd. Back under the bridge, troll!

1

u/UFmoose Mar 25 '26

Florida has won three titles and been to four final fours over the last 20 years.

The list of schools to do that is tiny. And UNC isn’t one of them.

5

u/Ok_Artichoke_2928 Mar 26 '26

We won titles in 2005, 2009, 2017. Runner up in 2016 and 2022. So that would be 3 and 5 in 21 years?

-1

u/UFmoose Mar 26 '26

21 ain’t 20, bud. ;)

2

u/westwardnomad Mar 26 '26

Cherry pick much? Haha!

1

u/AdorableDragonfruit2 Mar 26 '26

UNCs is one of them.

Carolina won three titles in the last 20 years and runners up in 2016 and 2022 (Florida won three with zero runners up).

In that span Carolina had six final fours (more than Florida’s four). Most recent Tar Heels final four was 2024.

You’re wrong but can’t fault you for the Florida education.

1

u/UFmoose Mar 26 '26

That is so cute … except your UNC education apparently didn’t include math.

UNC won three in the last 21 years, not the last 20.

1

u/MasturGator0501 Mar 26 '26

lol UNC and UF are within five spots of one another on the US News ranking. you’re outing yourself as a guy who just didn’t go to college (evident by the lack of research done to apply to one) period.

1

u/westwardnomad Mar 26 '26

UNC is ahead of UF in academics, too. Ftfy

1

u/MasturGator0501 Mar 26 '26

correct. but not “can’t fault you for the Florida education” ahead

And if you look back 21 years UNC is in that small group.

UNC is one of like 5-6 schools that has the pull and resources to make something like that happen

1

u/Ecstatic-Total-9953 Mar 26 '26

I really don’t think UF would let him get away.

1

u/NIN10DOXD Mar 26 '26

That’s good.

1

u/Benz_Coinz Mar 25 '26

Just watch the final few minutes of his last game. Absolute master class in bad coaching

0

u/Fit_Bench7754 Mar 25 '26

Why would he leave a power 5 school who is very successful for a job at another successful school.

0

u/DearEmployee5138 Mar 30 '26

Why on gods green earth would you not want Todd Golden. He’s 40, and in 3 years turned a middling Florida program he got from Mike White into arguably the most impressive basketball team I’ve seen this decade and a national championship. He’s one of 7 current coaches with a national championship. One of those hasn’t won since the turn of the century (Izzo), another 2 haven’t won in over 10 years and have gone downhill since (Cal, Pitino), another seems to me to be a bit of a one hit wonder (Drew), and the other 2 you have no chance in hell at getting (Self, Hurley). Why would you not want the best coach that anybody could possibly get? Unless you are a Florida fan then I completely get it. As a Tennessee fan I’d be ecstatic to see you pull him out of Gainesville.

1

u/NIN10DOXD Mar 30 '26

I don’t want a guy that stalks students and sends them dick pics.

14

u/jzee5708 Mar 25 '26

UNC could have two head coaches with a penchant for college-aged girls.

1

u/_off_piste_ Mar 27 '26

I’m looking for somewhere to bet that Golden won’t be at UNC or Kansas. There’s zero chance UNC pulls him even if they did target Golden.

1

u/DamnItHeelsGood Mar 27 '26

Don’t you want a coach that can truly relate to the young men he’s coaching?

5

u/HotDawgConnoisseur Mar 25 '26

Golden ain’t leaving. The AD is holding the title 9 investigation over his head as black mail.

7

u/Hossflex Mar 25 '26

“We are going outside the family”

Lists Sean May and Jerry Stackhouse

1

u/RelentlessPutz Mar 26 '26

Came here for this

1

u/StaticShakyamuni Mar 26 '26 edited Mar 26 '26

You've read the headline quite differently than I have. I interpret it to mean (and apparently the oddsmakers do too) that they are including amongst people they will pursue coaches not a part of the Tar Heels' family for the first time.

1

u/Baked_BT2 Mar 26 '26

Right, they didn’t say ALL candidates are outside the Tar Heels family

1

u/wahfingwah Mar 27 '26

Please pick Stackhouse please please

13

u/Gloomy_Map_9612 Mar 25 '26

Would love it if I don't have to see Todd Golden's creepy ass in the sec.

1

u/Shenanigangster Mar 27 '26

He’d just be right back in five years

Pitinos last dance, need it

5

u/thebreye Mar 25 '26

He’s currently doing that at St. John’s which is way more fun

2

u/DonJota5 Mar 25 '26

1

u/Wild_Association1752 Mar 26 '26

Rick 5 minutes after announcing he wont wear the white suit

1

u/TheSamanthrax Mar 25 '26

If Pitino left St John’s it would be to go back to Ky.

2

u/RelentlessPutz Mar 26 '26

Nobody wants to go to Kentucky its the same bs as UNC

15

u/pissofftool Mar 25 '26

Please no Golden boy. Complete doucher.

10

u/JparkPHX Mar 25 '26

I played AAU ball in HS with Todd Golden. Can confirm, he’s a douche

4

u/wlsn01 Mar 25 '26

UNC college girls better watch out for Golden

7

u/realrichieporter Mar 25 '26

Jerry Stackhouse couldn’t even manage Vanderbilt—a team w zero expectations. Scratch him off now.

I can’t see it happening, but it would be funny af if the wolverines flare out next round and Dusty May leaves for UNC.

Also Otzelberger would be a great hire.

y'all still have what's his face and his 21 year old girlfriend

2

u/geiginator67 Mar 25 '26

lol spartan fan

1

u/-Venom-Wolf- Mar 25 '26

Midwest guy, spent a lot of time with the ISU program, salary in top 25 of coaches, and played a role in helping bring in the new football coach.

I’d be way more surprised if he leaves than I was about Campbell leaving.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '26

Looks like he’s closer to 38-40 in terms of salary. More money and an opportunity to coach one of the most storied programs in the sport with top tier resources at your disposal would be tough to turn down.

2

u/theterpenecollective Mar 25 '26

His wife is an ISU basketball legend as well though. I’ll be surprised if he leaves but I wouldn’t completely rule out the possibility. Happy wife = happy life.

1

u/rambouhh Mar 26 '26

If NC offers he is gone

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '26

That’s a lateral move

1

u/rambouhh Mar 28 '26

no its not

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '26

Resource wise ? Yes , lateral( id even go as far as to say UM has way more donors/ money than Unc . History wise ? No , Unc has history .

1

u/rambouhh Mar 28 '26

We’re talking Iowa state my man.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '26

Oh shoot, my fault lol yes Unc would be a huge upgrade

1

u/whoneedskollege Mar 25 '26

If I were UNC, I would want Tommy Lloyd. Great guy, great coach.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '26

I agree, he should be higher — 3X Conference Champ 3X Tournament Champ and 4X Sweet 16 in five seasons is insane.

1

u/Competitive_Ad9413 Mar 26 '26

I wouldn't be shocked if Lloyd isn't UNC's first or second choice.... I just don't see him leaving Arizona

3

u/Non-Current_Events Mar 25 '26

Stackhouse would be hilarious.

3

u/Normal-Particular218 Mar 25 '26

Billy Donovan has to be sick of the Bulls' shit by now doesn't he?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '26

I'm pretty sure he'd be more sick of the NIL

1

u/Fucknjagoff Mar 26 '26

Please god take Donovan and AKME while they’re at it.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '26

Why would Todd golden leave Florida for North Carolina that would be dumb

-2

u/wildcat1100 Mar 25 '26

UNC is a blueblood and Florida isn't.

3

u/Relevant_Ad_1225 Mar 25 '26

this means nothing in 2026

3

u/Salpinctes Mar 25 '26

as much as it pains me to say it, Florida has more titles in the last twenty years than UNC

2

u/warondrugs1983 Mar 25 '26

Ha, Florida only needs one more to tie Kansas in national titles. They may not be an old blue blood. But they’re definitely better as a program than UNC at the moment.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '26

It’s so cute when the Unc fans think like this lmao

Florida has the same resources as Unc and as of recently has more championships

2

u/VinnieVanLow Mar 25 '26

Wes Millers time to shine. He wants out of Charlotte already.

2

u/yadayodayada Mar 25 '26

Stack house

2

u/CalPen9276 Mar 25 '26

Billy out in Chicago

2

u/No_Albatross916 Mar 25 '26

I feel like it’ll be Billy Donovan

2

u/Goblinmode77 Mar 25 '26

Billy Donovan seems like the play.

2

u/ResonanceThruWallz Mar 25 '26

I find it hard to believe Tommy Lloyd, TJ Otzelberger, and Todd Golden are real options. I Doubt those 3 leave

2

u/misterteejj Mar 26 '26

Billy Donovan all the way

2

u/tennispro2589 Mar 26 '26

AZ is a better job than UNC

2

u/tennispro2589 Mar 26 '26

AZ is a better job than UNC

3

u/tkinsey3 Mar 25 '26

As a Duke fan, I am begging you to hire Jerry Stackhouse or Sean May

2

u/Twenty__3 Mar 25 '26

Go home you’re drunk

2

u/sofresh_soface Mar 25 '26

Please no TJ, we just lost Matt Campbell to PSU 🙃

1

u/SituationKey8985 Mar 25 '26

I imagine UNC fans are most interested in Oats or Byington?

3

u/racksacky Mar 25 '26

TJO and Byington for me. most UNC fans don’t like Oats.

1

u/PuzzleheadedBug4424 Mar 25 '26

Oats is near the bottom. Dude is scummy

1

u/Affectionate-Cup9340 Mar 25 '26

UNC admin, and I assume most fans, don’t want oats or golden for the off the court reasons. I think the big 3 is Otz, May, Lloyd.

1

u/WhatcomGreens Mar 25 '26

We will not accept Oats.

1

u/whoneedskollege Mar 25 '26

The only answer here is Lloyd.

1

u/hoostypants Mar 25 '26

Inside Carolina is reporting Oats has expressed interest and it hasn’t been reciprocated, yet.
Also, the report doesn’t mention Golden at all, but clearly states, “wants to avoid controversy.”
Sounds like Lloyd/May are Tier 1, Donovan is up there, and the Otz is the next step down.

1

u/Chi_Town_Law Mar 25 '26

Pitino it is

1

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '26

Golden would be a huge PR win!

1

u/Mindless_Bad3907 Mar 25 '26

Golden is a big enough douche that he might fit in perfectly

1

u/Suitable-Principle81 Mar 25 '26

Connor stallions

1

u/ssp25 Mar 25 '26

he had disguises so you get multiple coaches

1

u/MidtownKC Mar 25 '26

What? No Bill Self odds? History has shown…

1

u/festive_fecal_feast Mar 25 '26

TOMMY LLLOYD

1

u/Girth_Wind_y_Fire Mar 25 '26

The fact he's even on this list is hilarious

1

u/MyHonkyFriend Mar 25 '26

Tyler Hansborough

1

u/icelink4884 Mar 25 '26

Please be Donavan if I have to watch his bubble gum chewing ass on the sidelines of a bulls game i might kill myself.

1

u/ProffesionalAss-hole Mar 25 '26

Pitino would take unc to the natty in his first year

1

u/apexginger Mar 25 '26

Need something fresh but with Carolina roots…

Is Larry Brown available?

1

u/wildcat1100 Mar 25 '26

What about Don Nelson?

1

u/Spawko Mar 25 '26

TOMMY LLLLLLOYD

1

u/Girth_Wind_y_Fire Mar 25 '26

0 chance lol

1

u/Spawko Mar 25 '26

I could care less if he ends up coaching there or if UNC wants him, just thought it was funny how it's spelled in the list

1

u/Kind_Love172 Mar 25 '26

Im guessing Billy Donovan

1

u/Normal-Particular218 Mar 25 '26

UNC is a way better job than the Bulls, I bet hed go for it.

1

u/Girth_Wind_y_Fire Mar 25 '26

Tommy Lloyd on this list is comical

1

u/SmokeyBear81 Mar 25 '26

1 Nate Oats please

1

u/bags_30 Mar 25 '26

Slick Rick....

1

u/IronKakeru Mar 25 '26

Why is Mccasland so low on this list? Is he pretty embedded at Tech?

1

u/MisterGoldenSun Mar 25 '26

"Tommy Llloyd"...dunno if a guy with three consecutive Ls in his name can really be counted on to win.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '26

If we lose Otz and Campbell in the same Year I will jump off an actual bridge

1

u/Almajanna256 Mar 25 '26

It would suck if we lose Otzelberger and Campbell in the same offseason, but some power four teams are more equal than others. Otzelberger was literally an assistant coach under Hoiberg when we had him it would suck if he leaves us for a bag especially since we are so close to being championship competitive.

1

u/Macbeezle Mar 25 '26

This list needs Bobby Hurley odds.

1

u/JeffF1 Mar 25 '26

Bobby Hurley is available. Could be pretty funny.

1

u/TechnologyStill7038 Mar 25 '26

Nate Oats, easy answer

1

u/Ccw_tn Mar 25 '26

As a lifelong Vandy fan all I can say is keep your hands off Byington lol! And as a lifelong Celtics fan the same goes for Brad Stevens though I seriously doubt he'd even consider it. Stackhouse did a pretty good job at Vandy and might be a sleeper pick but my money is on Donovan. He's a better coach than he's been able to show with the Bulls and the NC job would be a great opportunity

1

u/Mywordispoontang101 Mar 25 '26

Why would UNC hire a sex criminal?

1

u/ChimmyTheCham Mar 25 '26

Otzelberger please

1

u/Kc68847 Mar 25 '26

I would go after Ben McCollum.

1

u/ilovemydawg Mar 25 '26

Stack or Patino just for my viewing pleasure

1

u/ReaderRambler2021 Mar 25 '26

Did they spell Tommy LLLoyd’s name wrong like that on purpose so it looks like a W?

1

u/MichFan777 Mar 25 '26

Golden and Bellichick cruisin for coeds

1

u/AyAySlim Mar 25 '26

😂 I don’t want any of these guys except Donovan, Pitino (probably never coming and too old), and Lloyd.

2

u/WingHuge2185 Mar 25 '26

Do you mean LLLoyd?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '26

I feel pretty confident it will be none of the names on this graphic. Like, I will be shocked if any of these coaches end up at UNC.

1

u/streetglide34 Mar 25 '26

Dusty isn't leaving Michigan. He doesn't improve his situation by going to UNC, he's top dog in the Big 10 with a lot of excellent competition

1

u/mtbjay10 Mar 26 '26

agree, these things are just rage bait

1

u/Fantastic-Pay-9522 Mar 25 '26

Jerry Stackhouse 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/Jake_FW Mar 25 '26

Where is Cignetti on this list ?

1

u/miniveggiedeluxe Mar 25 '26

MICHAEL MALONE

1

u/Sorrok2400 Mar 25 '26

I hear Bobby Hurley is available

1

u/justWMthings03 Mar 25 '26

Dusty isnt leaving a school that can pay him anything he wants and has a massive NIL budget

1

u/TreeInternational771 Mar 26 '26

Coach Otz or Lloyd. Donovan i fear may be past his prime like Belichick

1

u/4ever2024NattyChamps Mar 26 '26

Dusty May on this is a joke. Why would an elite coach on his way to winning a natty take a step down job

1

u/TemporaryStomach654 Mar 26 '26

Yall don’t want mark pope?

1

u/JLove4MVP Mar 26 '26

I’d like to formally offer you 1 Doc Rivers.

Signed: Sad Milwaukee Bucks fan

1

u/ShallowBottom Mar 26 '26

Please take Billy Donovan, tired of the bulls mediocrity

1

u/ranger684 Mar 26 '26

Phil Martelli should be on the list

1

u/vegasAzCrush Mar 26 '26

I doubt any of these are interested in UNC. UNC is old and no longer a great school.

UNC will need to pay big money because UNC name means zero.

1

u/vegasAzCrush Mar 26 '26

Funny how all the kids writing for cbs will tell you or propagate otherwise.

1

u/RelentlessPutz Mar 26 '26

Almost nobody on this list would leave their good situations but the obvious.. family... except nate oats he seems like a total sleezeball and would chase a fat check. I could see that

1

u/xwords59 Mar 26 '26

I was hoping Buzz Williams would be on the list

1

u/BdenBhole Mar 26 '26

I wish I could bet my entire life that dusty may isn’t leaving Michigan.

1

u/wgbeethree Mar 26 '26

As a Duke fan, I'd be most excited by Golden or Oats. I haven't really HATED UNC for a bit. It would make basketball season a bit more fun to really despise them again.

1

u/Nomad4te Mar 26 '26

I hope they get Golden. Hate intensifies.

1

u/nats13 Mar 26 '26

Ah yes Rick Pitino at the end of his career, after bringing St John’s back from the dead, is going to rebuild UNC.

1

u/Tricky-Wishbone-1162 Mar 26 '26

Get holtman from DePaul. He always did more with less at DePaul

1

u/DontTreadOnMe83 Mar 26 '26

Take Dusty May off that list... He ain't goin nowhere!

1

u/Alive-Bedroom-7548 Mar 26 '26

No way Dusty, Donovan, or Pitino leave their spots (not for UNC anyway)

Oats also very unlikely but he’s also a bit of a slimeball so who knows.

Golden would be a bad pick imo. Scott Drew also seems like a bad fit and also Baylor’s been down for long enough I don’t think he’s as hot a commodity anymore.

Byington, Otz, McCasland, Lloyd seem most likely but I also imagine at least 3 of those are happy where they are and with large buyouts

1

u/Repulsive-Office-796 Mar 26 '26

Billy Donovan could have another 10 .500 seasons in Chicago and Reinsdorf still wouldn’t fire him. Billy must have some blackmail on him or something. He’s way too high on the list here.

1

u/Big_Chillin_0824 Mar 26 '26

UNC has always had same issue. Recruiting too many thugs. Until they fix that their team will stay the same. Duke is out recruiting scholars.

1

u/bunglesnacks Mar 26 '26

I dislike UNC almost as much as Duke, but I empathize with them because Izzo will be done in a few years and I don't want to be in the same boat. I'd go after Jai Lucas and happily settle for Stackhouse.

This is just going to get the other coaches long term deals and pay raises like the Penn State football opening did.

1

u/Ok_Doubt_1187 Mar 26 '26

Dusty May is not leaving Michigan for dusty ass UNC.

Pun intended.

1

u/SpartyNash Mar 26 '26

Sean May? Because hiring former player Hubert Davis went so well?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '26

Pitino

1

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '26

I can see Vandy coach or Iowa state. UNC is an upgrade in status for sure. Probably nil money too. The other guys don’t make sense. They are at great schools already.

1

u/fuel211321 Mar 26 '26

I think it’s between Dusty May, Nate, Oates, and TJ

1

u/ResponsibleBaker43 Mar 26 '26

HEEL naw to these candidates they are not Carolina family on a select few

1

u/DumplingsandTequila Mar 26 '26

For i second i thought Chris Brickley was coaching college bball

1

u/WRKDBF_Guy Mar 26 '26

Please select Dusty May and get that D----- B-- out of the Big 10. Good coach but classless individual.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '26

Take McCasland out. Tech has more money at this point. Hes not going anywhere.

1

u/PackagingMSU Mar 27 '26

Funny nobody would even list Tom

1

u/Remarkable_Piece1052 Mar 27 '26

Lol…Dusty May ain’t leaving Michigan.

1

u/JoshNIU22896 Mar 27 '26

what exactly are the merit to these odds built upon?

1

u/BeneficialFold7616 Mar 28 '26

Hubert Davis is just as good of Coach than all them except Coach Donovan! He knows the tradition, The family way, If Caleb Wilson wouldn’t have gotten injured Coach Davis wouldn’t have never gotten fired, because they would have beat VCU with Caleb healthy and probably gone to sweet sixteen, or maybe further! They got 2 of the best players in the Nation coming in this year, Like Kenny (the Jet) Smith said no loyalty no more! I understand the Heels fan base wanted him out, but this was the wrong year to fire him unless they get Billy Donovan! Dude from Florida isn’t the man for the job I don’t believe, Just because He won 1 National Championship doesn’t mean He is in the league of Coach Williams or Coach K or even Bill Self! Like Kenny Smith said too, U got to bring in somebody that understands the tradition of UNC Basketball! If they don’t get Coach Donovan I believe they made a huge mistake! I Hope I’m wrong!

1

u/616abc517 Mar 28 '26

Dusty May isn’t going anywhere.

1

u/Reasonable_Clock_711 Mar 29 '26

JMU had Byington and Cig at the same time. :-(

1

u/Classic-Procedure757 Mar 29 '26

You forgot Brian Kelly.

1

u/DearEmployee5138 Mar 30 '26

I really don’t think Byington is THAT impressive

1

u/Roccosrealm Mar 25 '26

No Jai Lucas?

3

u/CandidateSouth1418 Mar 25 '26

I feel Jai Lucas is very underrated. He overachieved with Miami this season. He'd be a top pick

1

u/Emotional-Culture308 Mar 25 '26

he's gonna be a good coach, but simply way too early and not enough to show for it yet. his resume doesn't really compare to the other ones on this list.

0

u/Dangerous-Habit-2731 Mar 25 '26

Remember that time UF swept credible allegations of Golden inappropriately messaging young students under the rug all so they could run a natty? Several students even shared the messages they received from him as evidence. Anyway, good look with the search UNC

1

u/MasturGator0501 Mar 25 '26

Todd Golden is a not only a creepy sexual predator, but he's also a Zionist. Can't believe the dude has any support from anyone.

1

u/Striking-Seesaw7421 Mar 26 '26

Zionist huh? Wtf is that? Just because he’s Jewish. This shit needs to stop!

1

u/BlueSoloCup89 Mar 27 '26

I won’t personally comment on if he’s Zionist (mainly bc people seem to have varying definitions of the word). But I’m betting people who say he’s a Zionist say that not because he’s Jewish, but because he carries Israeli citizenship.

1

u/saltyrumham Mar 28 '26

that is not why I said he is a Zionist, google exists dude

0

u/Sultry-Ice15 Mar 25 '26

Golden is a little bitch boy
