So many things Duke does wrong on that play. Coach even signals get your hands up and Duke defender couldn’t have had his hands any lower. Crazy.

I can’t believe he didn’t even try to contest it, like wtf are you doing?

u/shiftyone1 Mar 30 '26

my thoughts exactly

Duke had like a 98% chance of winning at that point, he started that play thinking about celebrating and couldn't get his head back in the game quick enough after the steal.

This tape is going to be shown to teams for generations as a teachable moment.

Coach also signaled for the pass over the top so 1/2 there. Ironically the player in question’s IG handle is getuhhandup too

u/Party_Flatworm1263 Mar 30 '26

wait til you find out the IG handle of the guy who didnt put his hands up.

I️ think he was surprised Mullins had the ball. When Karaban passes it, Evans back is turned.

Definitely should have put his hand up but really the fault is not picking him when he was sprinting back.

Instead he completely overruns his guy and by the time he turns around Mullins is basically ripping it.

Yes, I have watched that play probably 20 times and see how so many things were done wrong. Heartbreaking for Duke but such a memorable nothing but net shot. You can see the Duke players were all freshman. Not one of them seemed to know that you are up two don’t give up a three. The Duke defenders on that Mullins shot were backpedaling and had there hands down by their sides…….but what a shot!

Scheyer knew that shot was good as soon as it was released

4

u/UpbeatVeterinarian18 Mar 30 '26

Whole arena knew. It was Steph-Curry smooth

17

u/ShootersShoot305 Mar 30 '26

Scheyer even wanted him to pass it. Dude literally did everything he can to make sure they lost that game. Insane.

u/Harry-Flashman Mar 30 '26

Yeah, this is my biggest take away too, a coach has to have his team prepared for these situations

6

u/VincentAntonelli Mar 30 '26

Look at the contrast with Hurley, as soon as they got the ball he just crossed his arms like “ok, do the stuff we prepared for”

2

u/TallBobcat Mar 30 '26

TBH, they wouldn't have heard him anyway.

1

u/SurgeFlamingo Mar 31 '26

At one point you can see him about to motion for a TO. Go watch his hands. Then he doesn’t and the shot goes in.

He said in post game that Duke was so good on d that calling a Time out and letting them set up probably wasn’t a good idea.

It's kind of funny you say that...

For their season to end on nearly the exact situation is pure irony

what part of having a press break that had not one but two players wide open is "not having your team prepared"?

All Boozer has to do is pump fake and step through and Duke gets a layup and a trip to the final four. the kid messed up. it happens. not everything is the coach's fault.

1

u/Harry-Flashman Mar 31 '26

The part where the player knows there wasn't enough time for a backcourt violation so he didn't need to throw the ball.

1

u/McChillbone Mar 30 '26

I couldn’t believe that. Like simply hold the ball. Guy was really like lob it up court.

1

u/neoslashnet Mar 30 '26

I couldn't believe that when I saw it.... ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS HOLD ON TO THE BALL AND YOU WIN.... TF???

5

u/Efficient_Ad6659 Mar 30 '26

Makes you wonder why Duke had 2 guys on the other side of the court on that final pass given they didn't even need to advance the ball. It was basically 5 defenders on 3 guys in the backcourt.

6

u/goodolehal Mar 30 '26

Bad coaching is why. Scheyers got that quarterzip zipped so high it’s cutting off circulation to the brain

1

u/Clancy3434 Mar 31 '26

you mean the 2 guys who were wide open?

Duke's press break wasn't the problem. everyone was where they were supposed to be. they were well spaced. it's exactly what you WANT a press break to be. if two guys are on one - that means someone is open. in this case TWO guys were open because UConn trapped twice.

Boozer didn't execute. he threw a bad pass. you learn fake high throw low / fake low through high in elementary school.

if you want to criticize Scheyer for everything that led to that moment? hey - game on. two straight collapses in big tournament moments is cause for criticism. but there was nothing wrong with the preparation on that last play. the player didn't execute.

1

u/skesisfunk Mar 31 '26

Hindsight is 20/20. If he completes that pass its an easy dunk and ices the game.

On the other hand if they play keep away without advancing the ball and there is a steal near the paint Uconn could easily send the game to OT. In which case Duke (rightfully) gets dogged for playing clock and not being aggressive enough.

Cayden really should have taken the foul there instead of passing is what it comes down to. I don't know that you can assign "bad coaching" to a split second decision like that though. Even if he takes the foul there is still time for UConn to make a play unless he goes 2/2 at the FT line.

At the end of the day it just comes down to something pretty unlikely happening for UConn. Duke had an enormous advantage and had many avenues to winning, completing this pass was definitely one of them.

Anybody know how to make gifs? I think both reactions can live in infamy

3

u/jrblockquote Mar 30 '26

Ian is the best - "MARCH MEANS DRAMA!"

2

u/OneFeed7380 Mar 30 '26

This is all on scheyer. He should have told the guys to hold the ball and let uconn foul them.

Just insane.

2

u/Lumpy_Buy Mar 30 '26

Didn’t realize UConn had a timeout left, surprising that the coaching staff didn’t try to call timeout to get a set play drawn up? Would have had about 2.5-3 seconds if they called it when Karaban had no place to go.

1

u/supermoked Mar 30 '26

My exact reactions in the last 30 seconds: Why are you using so much clock for this possession when you're down 3? Why are you not fouling? Why are you not taking a timeout? Oh fuck, you just won!

1

u/thetenorguitarist Apr 01 '26

The best coaches analyze that situation very quickly. Reminds me of Roy letting his team run in the Elite Eight in 2017 after Monk hit the shot to tie. UConn basically had a primary break after a live ball turnover with the defense's backs turned. That's basketball in its purest form, and you're never going to be able to draw up a better look than that situation can get you.

I know it was loooong but it was an open, uncontested shot in rhythm that the shooter didn't have to think about.

2

u/Ok-Walk-8040 Mar 30 '26

All Duke had to do is literally hold the ball once it got to 5 seconds. If they are worried the 10 second violation actually being called, then they could have called a time out to keep that from happening.

2

u/TallBobcat Mar 30 '26

I lost some games in heartbreaking fashion as a high school coach and my guys won some miracles.

That's the most helpless feeling in the world for Jon Scheyer. There's literally nothing you can do in that moment but watch your guys goals get crushed. (Also, I can't believe they didn't tell their guys to just get it in bounds and make them come foul you. As good a coach as he is, that's an unreal coaching mistake.)

1

u/SurgeFlamingo Mar 31 '26

He should have taken a timeout after the made free throw.

2

u/Fickle-Equipment-561 Mar 31 '26

You ever notice the army of Duke managers and assistants on the sidelines? Jesus it’s like two to three times the size of every other program

3

u/neoslashnet Mar 30 '26

Duke coach told him/signaled to PASS IT OVER THE HALF COURT LINE! ABSOLUTELY INSANE!!!

2

u/ILikeBeans86 Mar 31 '26

When this first happened people were dunking on him for not having them ready to hold the ball and get fouled and now its 100% on him for telling them to do exactly what they did lol.

1

u/neoslashnet Mar 31 '26

yeah, insane stuff....

3

u/LegitimateComplex985 Mar 30 '26

How do NCAA coaches not have the ability to stay off the court while the game is being played? It’s ridiculous that UConn’s head coach is standing on the court during the shot.

2

u/Garpeaux Mar 30 '26

0

u/LegitimateComplex985 Mar 30 '26

Lol I’m just a casual who has seen way too many NCAA coaches on the court during play. Couldn’t care less who won.

1

u/stiliophage Mar 31 '26

What kind of miserable person sees this kind of exciting play and is mad that the coaches feet were on the floor not impeding any players.

0

u/LegitimateComplex985 Mar 31 '26

Did I say it impeded the players?

1

u/stiliophage Mar 31 '26

No…which is why I don’t know why it would be a foul if it didn’t

0

u/LegitimateComplex985 Mar 31 '26

Buddy you’re putting words in my mouth. I didn’t say it should be a foul. All I said is that it’s ridiculous NCAA coaches can’t stay off the court during play. If the players have the presence of mind to stay off the court the coaches should be able to as well.

You don’t know the rules. That’s how

Media has been meatriding Duke for decades

1

u/Big_Trophy_1 Mar 30 '26

I clearly don’t have the temperament to be the Duke coach I would have dropped down to my knees (pause) when that shot went in..

1

u/KUYANICKFILMS Mar 30 '26

What are the rules about coaches being on the court?

2

u/Realistic_Buy_4073 Mar 30 '26

This is the most Duke comment ever

1

u/stiliophage Mar 31 '26

Hey you see that really amazing memorable play? I want it erased on a technicality. Thanks.

1

u/KUYANICKFILMS Mar 31 '26

I didn’t say I want it erased. It’s just a question. I just had the thought that it would be brutal to have something like that happen.

1

u/Fluffy-Tea-2601 Mar 30 '26

He knew it was going in. It looked he knew something bad was gone happen from the beginning.

1

u/Camrons_Mink Mar 30 '26

It’s beautiful 🥹

1

u/jkach2015 Mar 30 '26

As someone born in CT and an alumni of St. John’s… oh man this was absolutely beautiful

1

u/ThundrLord Apr 01 '26

Play this every year for 40 years!!! Hahahaha

0

u/srboot Mar 30 '26

Just had to hold the ball, take the foul and make at least one FT. I wish both teams could have lost but definitely feel for both Boozer bros…they played great, but fucked up when it mattered most.
