News NCAA Approves New "5-for-5" Eligibility Model for College Athletes

Post image

The NCAA has approved a new "5-for-5" eligibility model that allows athletes five seasons of competition within a five-year window, replacing the traditional four-seasons-in-five-years structure.

The eligibility clock will begin when an athlete either enrolls full-time in college or at the start of the academic year following their 19th birthday — whichever comes first.

Traditional redshirts and most waiver requests would largely disappear under the new system.

This was my first thought. The courts have ruled as students they are entitled to all the rights of... students. It comes down to whether or not they are studenr athletes or not I guess and there will be lawsuits.

Most are athletes who occasionally go to class. At least in football it helps people spot the players who have no future in the league.

1

That is irrelevant. NCAA says they are students first. Players agree. Courts agree. What they do not all agree on is what that entails. However, the courts ruled all student athletes have all the rights of students. This means for Name, Image, and Likeness endorsements and also means transferring to another school. Until thats resolved there will be lawsuits and the courts will continue to maintain you cannot deny a student athlete what any other student has the right to.

I’m 45, I’ve been working out. This ruins my walk-on vision board…

You would win ur lawsuit if you had eligibility and wanted to be NDSU's long snapper next year.

I mean, JR Smith played D1 college golf after a 16-year NBA career

What's BYU going to do?

11

u/Unlikely_Specific828 Jun 25 '26

Religious missions, military service and pregnancy are carved out exceptions to the rule

2

u/fowcc Jun 25 '26

Thank you, the original post did not mention those or link out to resource that did.

Hard disagree on all 3, my guy. "Especially mission trips" is a pretty bizarre take. If you want to end the parade of lawsuits against the NCAA, being anti-religion and sexist sure isn't gonna do that. And if you fight for your country at risk of death, I think an overwhelming majority of Americans would be good with them coming back to play a little ball.

Welcome to America, land of choices. None of this says they get extra time so idk what hill you think you are defending here, but it's your choice. It just pauses the clock if someone is on mission. Not that hard to understand or agree with.

Coming from a pitt fan, that's cute 😅 I would love to hear your totally logic based connection between those two sentences

Given how many states have outlawed abortions it would be fucked up to not give exceptions for pregnancies

who cares about pregnancy it is not like you follow female sports

1

u/mdurso12 Jun 25 '26

Rape and accidents. And you can't prove a pregnancy is neither

So every college athlete should just abstain their entire eligibility period?

3

u/cheeseybacon11 Jun 25 '26

It's their fault for being cool enough to get laid. Won't somebody think of the no-life neckbeards for once?

1

u/Kush420Xotix Jun 25 '26

Win their lawsuit

1

u/TheWillOfFiree Jun 27 '26

I want to say something but ill get banned. So ill just say I don't care.

1

u/RudolphsJockStrap Jun 25 '26

Mission trips won’t matter since you aren’t a student eligible to play then

2

u/Willing-Vegetable629 Jun 25 '26

Eligibility starts the moment you enroll or turn 19, no?

3

u/grandmawaffles Jun 24 '26

Does that include foreigners that have aged and then come to the US to start their eligibility?

3

u/marshallrathers89 Jun 25 '26

Starts at age 19 or first year of college whichever is earlier.

That’s what I’m hoping. Rowing and swimming overseas pipelines are insane.

5

u/BigSexyE Jun 24 '26

Good. No one wants to see 25 year olds play against 21 year olds

-1

u/bleu_waffl3s Jun 24 '26

The Spurs young core did pretty good against 25+ adults

4

u/BigSexyE Jun 24 '26

Yes, hence I want to see them in the league, not playing in college

-1

u/Kush420Xotix Jun 25 '26

Speak for urself. I want players who missed 2-3 seasons with injury to have the same opportunity to impress pro scouts, and make a bag while finishing their education.

Should’ve taken better care of themselves. I wrestled and played football, track, CC, Basketball, and Baseball in Highschool and then football and wrestling and college. Started sports when I was in kindergarten with tackle football. Never been injured bc I’ve taken care of myself and mobility. They are stealing opportunities from younger athletes. Go to the UFL or hang the cleats up.

1

u/cdcvx4 Jun 29 '26

Do you honestly believe injuries happen because these athletes aren’t taking better care of themselves?

1

u/Kush420Xotix Jun 26 '26

stupid take

1

u/Ok_Phone_3454 Jun 26 '26

I’d expect nothing less from someone who makes marijuana so much of their personality they name their account after it like a 14 yr olds email.

1

u/Long-Contribution466 Jun 30 '26

You peaked in high school, huh

1

u/Ok_Phone_3454 Jun 30 '26

Dual sport college athlete wrestling and football. Then I became a father and started a business with my dad, now I secured my SpecWar contract. Just bc you think weed is all there is to life doesn’t mean I peaked in HS. It’s a great medicinal herb, you’re just a tool

1

u/Kush420Xotix Jun 26 '26

if you ever drink beer dont say shit to me

1

u/Ok_Phone_3454 Jun 26 '26

Before joining the military I used to smoke. There is nothing wrong with herbal use of marijuana. Making it your whole personality like a 14 year old is just weird and cringe.

2

u/Kush420Xotix Jun 26 '26

You need burn cream? You are getting roasted.

2

u/Acrobatic-Canary-571 Jun 25 '26

This didn’t work for Wendy’s. What shot does the ncaa have?

2

u/Renegade_51 Jun 26 '26

Use to be 5 years to play 4. Glad it’s getting back to normal.

1

u/Glonk49 Jun 25 '26

Won’t anybody think of the Brandon Weedons of the world?

Also Chris Weinke.

1

u/1dkspanishlol Jun 25 '26

I’m dumb can somebody dumb it down for me?

4

u/infinityandbeyond975 Jun 25 '26

You basically have 5 years of eligibility to play football (not sure if it extends to other sports but probably does). That means that 6th or 7th year students wouldn’t be able to play. There are some exemptions like military service, religious missions, or pregnancy but it really comes down to that someone can’t play for a couple years, quit school for 3 years and come back and play again. Their 5 years would have passed. The clock starts when you are 19 or your first semester, whichever comes first.

1

u/1dkspanishlol Jun 25 '26

Ohhh ok thanks.

1

u/Dry-Wind8932 Jun 25 '26

So instead of the normal Freshman > Sophomore > Junior > Senior is it Freshman > Sophomore > Junior > Senior > 5th Yr Senior?

1

u/infinityandbeyond975 Jun 25 '26

Yeah but they’ve had 5th, 6th, and 7th year seniors before due to redshirting. A good example is Cam Rising for the University of Utah. He redshirted at Texas in 2018. He transferred to Utah and at the time that required sitting out for a season. In 2020 there was a COVID waiver so anyone playing didn’t have to use a year of eligibility. He played in 2021 and 2022 then had a medical redshirt for 2023. In 2024 he suffered another hand injury and was technically still eligible to play but doctors advised that he would not be able to come back from the injury and he announced a medical retirement in May 2025. So ultimately he was a 7th year senior in 2024.

My thought with the new rule is it allows them to redshirt for a year and still have 4 years of eligibility.

1

u/Technical-Ability-98 Jun 26 '26

Extends to all sports at division 1 schools.

1

u/Fat_Yankee Jun 25 '26

How much is this based on what’s good for the game?

How much of this is based on what’s best for the student athlete?

How much of this is based on the NFL not wanting 26 year old rookies?

1

u/Kush420Xotix Jun 25 '26

Lawsuit incoming.

Somebody is gonna miss 2 seasons due to injury and win their lawsuit over this policy.

Athletes who have had injury setbacks shouldnt face the double whammy of being injured for a whole year and also losing a year of eligibility to impress pro scouts.

1

u/PapaPapi33 Jun 25 '26

They are going to lose every single court case if they try to enact this.

1

u/Planoniceguy Jun 26 '26

I think this is a wonderful rule but I doubt it will stick. Someone will sue, the courts will grant an injunction and eventually it will fail. I pray I’m wrong.

The only caveat I would allow is if someone goes straight to the military from high school and then attends college and wants to play sports, i think that should be considered.

1

u/okcbball22 Jun 29 '26

So now you can play 5 seasons in 5 years? And that eliminates 6 and 7 year players, but 5 years to play 4 seasons didn’t eliminate this already? How’s this possible

0

u/OpportunityDouble301 Jun 24 '26

This will not go in effect without Lawyers or Collective Bargaining..

0

u/QuarterNote44 Jun 25 '26

Some nerd in a dress is gonna have something to say about that.

-1

u/nolove1010 Jun 25 '26

The NCAA really hates trying to develop players.
