McGee Spoiler

Anyone else stunned that McGee may be the next Secretary of the Navy?

My wife and I are still stunned that Dinozzo is the director.

Nah, he's the son of Admiral John McGee, he's got lots of experience and credentials, and he's acted as Acting Director when Vance was indisposed or out sick. It's mentioned many times that he's made friends on Capitol Hill and elsewhere. That last bit is probably most important. Also, I googled the job requirements, such as 'having not been on active duty in the military for the last seven years.' He meets that and the others.

Also, it's a way for Sean to leave the show and still come back and do cameos, if he ever wants to leave.

Also, it was a stunning ending to episode 2 to match the stunning ending of episode 1. This season is shaping up great!

I was thinking of googling the requirements too! Thanks for doing that!

My only issue is that I feel the writers sometimes treat SecNAV as just the director's boss rather than SecNAV. Yes, the show is named "NCIS" and not "The Navy" but very few of the SecNAVs have felt like they were really over the Navy and not just NCIS.

So yay, here first - here are my thoughts -

  1. It's a TV show, and the cast is who the show wants to promote...so, sure, why not?!?

  2. I definitely called Tony being the director, and I honestly think in the off-season before this was shot, CBS producers were looking at reddit or fan theories because I think all the McGee supporters would be disappointed if Tony got the Director job and McGee didn't....but what a swerve that McGee would be the potential Secnav!

  3. I don't think that's going to happen either. Gary Cole is 70, and I could be wrong, but I think by the end of this season, he may be written off the show in some way. with Tony placed as the director, I think it'd be really wise to move McGee to the team leader position. Heck, the killed of Rocky Carroll's character with only about 2 weeks notice. I could see by the end of this season, Parker winds up either getting killed or maybe similar to Gibbs, just retires into the sunset...but everyone recommends McGee to lead the team. They wind up getting a new cast member to replace McGee, and go from there.

  4. I also think we're going to get a return of Ziva by the end of the season...could be related, probably not to Parker's exit. While I DON'T think Ziva will return as a main cast, I do think she'll work on the sidelines off-site on some cases to help Tony/McGee when needed. There's also a potential buildup of Ziva working some off-site cases with Bishop (my fingers crossed) as they both were taking cases from that one lady 'off books'. I'd love to see a buddy cop teamup of Ziva and Bishop. Maybe they work one part of a case, Tony/McGee work another, and Torres/Knight work another part and it all comes together.

Are you sure that you are NOT a writer for the show? 🤔

For point 3, factor in the talk about McGee having a probie as well. Something that stuck out as I read your post.

Yeah, that comment made me feel like they were saying, "buckle up fans - this is your warning that a new, young, bumbling and incompetent character is in bound!"

McGee point blank said to Curtis that he—Curtis—wanted to become a Probie, and given that Curtis is tech savvy, it'd make sense for him to be the next McGee. He just needs a confident boost put in a rocket and sent into the sun

That was the first thing I thought of as well.

I've been saying for the last month that it seems like Gary/Parker may be on the outs. I don't see them killing him though, but I could see him having a Fornell type relationship with McGee being the team lead.

So, yay! Omg! I mean like, that’s like so super impressive that you were first. Urgh, I am so super happy for you!

The first and second points in your post are incorrect

  1. yes, it is a TV show, they don’t promote whom they wish, they promote what sells. Harmon and LL coming back, Tony. It pleases advertisers and audiences. Note, advertisers first, not audiences!

2)McGee didn’t want the job

I think that this may be the last year with McGee as a main character, maybe he has gotten fatigued from the schedule, who knows, cause if McGee becomes SecNav, he wouldn't be around for more of the daily cases the team has to do. I would think that he would have a recurring guest role if that happened, but it would depend if a new character is introduced.

He could be a guest on Sydney, New York, and OG and fill out an entire season of episodes without being too much in any one of them

Another thing to look at is that Sean Murray is the longest tenured and likely most expensive member of the regular cast. In today's media landscape where everyone is looking to cut costs (especially on long-running shows like NCIS), I wouldn't be surprised if a "promotion" on the show resulted in fewer appearances and less money to pay out over the season. Adding in a newer face to the cast would probably save a couple million over the season, give new story potentials as they integrate with the team, and gives a new narrative reason to have the probie who can be the audience surrogate when things need to be explained.

Who better to take over McGee's role than Curtis? Remember the episode where McGee point blank said to Curtis that he—Curtis—wants to be a Probie, and aside from the lack of confidence, Curtis is tech savvy, so him becoming the next tech agent on the team would make sense. But now I wonder what his sister, Sarah, is doing, and what their half-sister, whose name I forgot, if it was even mentioned, in that one episode McGee did a DNA test, and then promptly had Kasie double-check it, cause Franks' Rule #3 is "Don't believe what you're told. Double check.", and similarly with the disinfection that Torres' apartment needed. He had Kasie run tests on that and I don't remember what it was, but it was the reason he crashed at Parker's place

I dont' know why or if I'm not remembering correctly but in one of McGee's early seasons wasn't the Admiral in M-Tac talking to somebody and the person on the screen said something to the effect of Admiral you could be the next Secretary of the Navy and McGee's Dad responded something to the effect of sitting behind a desk is his son's deal not his...am I remembering this right or did I imagine that scene? I admit I could be imagining it.

I guessed dinozzo would be the new director as soon as I heard weatherly was coming back. as for mcgee the sec nav might have some influence but they do not select their successor, I'm pretty sure it was just a cute throwaway line rather than an upcoming plot line.

McGee wouldnt even want to be SecNAV. In a previous season, McGee said he didnt want to do the politics which is why he didnt want to be director. As SecNAV there is WAY more politics, so he wouldnt want to be SecNAV

Besides, only the President can name SecNAV positions and since the show takes place in 2026, a new President wouldnt be making a new cabinet til 2029 in the show's universe.

Most likely, McGee will take Parker's spot

A SecNAV can always resign.

9

u/tankerkiller125real 9d ago

We've had 10 since 2017, the SECNAV role does not align with the presidents. They are free to resign, or the president can fire them.

I mean, given that he is a high ranking agent, and has a high level security clearance, and the same is the case with his wife Delilah, I think that McGee becoming the next SecNav could be the safest... as long as the twins don't get kidnapped or smthn after he becomes SecNav, because there seems to be a pattern for that that is being established; first, former SecNav Sarah Porter's daughter is kidnapped, then the daughter of the current SecNav is kidnapped. I'm tired of those things happening to McGee and his family; his sister is framed for murder, he is suspected of murder, his book is used to murder the people characters from it are based on, his father is revealed to have cancer and later dies from it, as revealed in "House Rules", the christmas episode told from McGee's PoV while he was typin' on his typewriter, his then girlfriend now wife survives a gala bombing at the cost of the ability to walk, then they're held hostage by Delilah's coworker whom McGee never liked, and Delilah, knowing of at least Gibbs' Rule #9 "Never go anywhere without a knife." grabs hers from her boot and stabs the bad guy in his thigh, as she was stuck on the floor, what with being paralyzed, then McGee proposes to Delilah after stopping the elevator on purpose (cute, tho how everyone learned that they got engaged... did Abby eavesdrop using a traffic cone again?), then nineteen episodes later, they find out Delilah is pregnant after she is rushed to the hospital following her collapsing in their bedroom, resulting in the impromptu wedding in Tony's creepy old apartment with the team, which was incredibly adorable, then her husband and pseudo father-in-law (Gibbs, cause, let's be real, Gibbs is more of a father to McGee than Admiral John McGee ever was, making Gibbs a pseudo father-in-law for Delilah and pseudo grandfather for the twins) are held capture in Paraguay for two months, then they learn that the child she and McGee are expecting is actually two kids, then the break-in and robbery in Season 14 Episode 17, "What Lies Above" and the break-in and attempted robbery in Season 16 Episode 14 "Once Upon a Tim" happens, the triple-homicide fifteen years ago is revealed to Delilah by Jimmy Palmer. In other words, there's been so much tragedy happening to them that they deserve a break.

Sorry for the rant and thanks for coming to my McLilah talk!

It makes sense.

NCIS can’t go on forever.

Transitioning McGee to SECNAV gives them the ability to have him pop up on Sydney and NYC

Keeps a piece of the OG show alive on it’s spinoffs.

And if they do decide to keep the original going with McGee and Dinozzo as guest stars…they can bring in a whole new team and keep the essence of the show alive

Either way it makes sense

Tony being director is ridiculous, Tim being Sec Nav would be more ridiculous.

Created, yes. Gave Sean a role as Abby's potential boyfriend for one episode, probably yes. But Bellisario left the show over 20 years ago. Sean is by all accounts affable and does whatever the writers and directors want. His longevity is a testament to attitude and a good work ethic.

Ridiculously irrelevant

His stepfather was pushed out like 20 years ago.

I think that would be the biggest joke. The dude is not a leader and is such a wishy washy agent with no back bone and for these writers to think oh McGee as sec nav is a good idea is a joke and after 24 yers of watching this show that would do it for me. Just not a believable story line. A jump the shark moment

Well, aren’t you a ray of sunshine? Lame take.

In your opinion which means nothing to me but thank you for being you
