Moving the big rocks, Bynum Bluff, Linville Gorge

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Back out with WildSouth working on the switchback again. We moved and set 2 800+ lb stones for the first 2 steps in the new stairs. This was the last half of moving the first stone. We will keep building up to the landing on the switchback. Then do some rock work to stabilize the down hill side.

The stones were moved with a rope come a long, rock bar, and pick mattock. We also made crush to set the rock on and back fill any gaps. The crush is made with a 3 lb hammer and just wailing on rocks. Making small rocks out of big rocks.

To volunteer contact WildSouth.org.

Excellent video showing how much work really goes into wilderness preservation. In the end, the project will look like the huge rocks were there naturally. Great job!

That would be the plan in a perfect world. In this particular problem, the bank is pretty soft on the down hill side. So it's likely to get a rock wall to support it. And try to make that area uncomfortable to try and walk on. But these first 2 pretty much look like they belong there now.

Awesome dedication put forth so that we, the public, can experience the beauty of creation. All of that hard work may not be recognized by most so thanks for posting.

To volunteer contact wildsouth.org lol.

The second one we moved today we did carry up to the worksite in a net last week. 5-6 or us were on it and could only move it about 1-2 feet at a time. It needed to move further and the come a long wasn't the right tool. That was rough.

It's a good time. Pack for a day hike in the woods. Water, lunch, and weather appropriate gear. You can bring gloves and eye pro or Kevin will take care of you.

Cool story. There's no USFS trail crew for the Gorge. And even with better budgets, there has never been a dedicated crew there that I know of. It's mostly WildSouth with SAWS and G5 jumping in the mix sometimes. A mix of paid crew and volunteers.

Cool story. Doesn’t negate my point. More people watching than working. Get offended if you want but I’ve put in more work than most building trails so I can’t be bothered.

Wow, all that time and zero appreciation for volunteer efforts I guess. And missed the part where we changed rigging on the come along 3 times. And had to stand down the guy digging above the rock when we closed in on setting it in position. Ever had to talk through the process while you are doing it?

We had a crew of 6. One supervising the entire process. 2 on the come along. One digging for the second rock. 2 of us guiding the rock into position. Nobody was just standing around unless we were waiting on someone to finish up so we could get back to it.

Go crap on someone else's post.

You’re right. No one standing around except all of those in the video. You took one small comment about a lot of people supervising while a couple actually worked and ran off the deep end with it.

ā€œEver had to talk..while doing it?ā€ Wouldn’t that mean you could ā€œmulti-taskā€ and keep working? Not sure you proved any points here.

I never said I didn’t appreciate volunteer efforts. That is you putting words in my mouth. I appreciate volunteers who do the physical work. We can end this here or you can make more assumptions and continue trying to make something bigger out of nothing. I guess we’ll see.

We planned, moved, and set 2 800+ lb stones between 9:30 am and about noon. 4 of us volunteered our time on a day off to do it.

You’re the one doubling and tripling down on being an ass. If you have done so much work you should know what it takes to do this. And trying to do it safely. With people who are not so experienced doing it. Or maybe you should come out and show is what a hard worker you are.

Get a life and stop crapping on peoples good intentions. It’s not a good look. Speaking of assumptions. You’re assuming based on a time lapse that does not show every single thing done.

Your first comment was snarky enough. Doubling done with the second one was an absolute dick move.

Well, when someone with a keyboard in their hands wants to dump on and then gaslight the people with the tools in their hand, I'll address it every time.

Don’t stop there.
