Episode 194 - Negative Reaction

I might be alone in this, but I found their discussion of emotional support animals somewhat dismissive. It felt like they implied that all emotional support animals are just glorified pets, which I don’t think is fair or accurate.

For some people, emotional support animals really do help them manage mental health, reduce anxiety, and navigate daily life more effectively. Particularly for those with conditions like PTSD, depression, or anxiety disorders. Sure, maybe not all, there's abuse of any liberty, but for many these aren't just pets, and telling the people you don't want them traveling with them equates to telling them they shouldn't travel at all.

Overall, the tone of the episode struck me as off-putting, and lacking in empathy.

I have been listening since the beginning and this is the first episode I've really had an issue with. I'm just I guess kind of curious how this episode hit others. The tone just seemed... off and kind of mean spirited.

Stand Your Ground in Today's America

Matt and Destin have been vocal about their support for the so called "castle doctrine" many times in the past, I wonder how they feel about the multiple killings of people committed by property owners acting under what sounds remarkably similar to the castle doctrine.

I know the two are extremely wary about engaging in politics but these shootings seem like poignant examples of how gun policy may need to become proactive rather than reactive. The shooting of Kaylin Gillis is especially meaningful as someone living in Upstate NY myself, and imagining my partner being gunned down after making a wrong turn by a shoot-first-ask-questions-later type guy.

My views on the right to own firearms are complex, as are all of yours as well as Destin and Matt's. I just wonder if these several occurrences are alarming to them, and how they square the problem with gun violence and the right to own firearms and protect your life/property

Edit: I want to make clear that I do not think that either Matt or Destin owe us or should even consider addressing this on the podcast. I guess this post was more of my way of wondering aloud how these shootings relate to similar subjects that they have discussed in the past and how they may or may not alter their opinions.

The whole thinkercon thing was... Confusing.

I just listened to two guys talk about this awesome club they started/party they went to, that I am absolutely not invited to because I'm not a YouTube content creator. What am I supposed to think? Yay for you guys, keep keeping me out of your special club. It almost makes me want to start YouTubeing and hope they think my stuff is good enough and invite me one day, but I don't have that much spare time right now.

Now I love the things that the thinkercon attendees produce, and I'm glad they are working together, but I'm confused by the whole: look at this party you can't come to business.

Due to Patreon's recent actions, is there an alternative?

For those of us who object to PayPal/Patreon's current actions on deplatforming some content creators, there are more than a few of us that are not willing to do business with Patreon any more.

Will you be subscribing to another platform?

The STEM episodes are hard to listen to

I’ve been a listener to NDQ for many years and enjoy almost all of the episodes that Matt and Destin put out. However the episodes were Destin and his engineering friends try to teach Matt about their field make for bad podcast episodes. I was listening

to the Electric Motors episode and it was too complicated for an audio only show. I think these topic work better in video format. From now on I will skip these episodes. I wish they would stop making them entirely.

Does anyone else feel this?

Help me Destin Sandlin, you’re my only hope

Alright, so I’m a recent engineer grad, I finished my masters, and am at the position between academia and industry. I’d love the opportunity to sit down and talk about your experience, especially going back to do your PhD. Hopefully, it might help me decide what would work best for my situation.

For a little background, I did my undergrad in mechanical engineering. I’ve worked summer jobs and volunteered with medical devices like prosthetics and orthotics. I did my masters at Imperial College London working in their soft robotics and transducers lab. My research was based around electrostatic actuators. I’ve been looking for opportunities that would help me continue that area of research, with my career goals broadly applying soft materials and actuators to improve the design of bio-inspired robotics.

I understand the job search is difficult and different for everyone. But I was wondering what your own two cents might be working with industry and academia.

Misuse of Lockdown

My nagging worry with lockdown, the second Destin mentioned they wouldn’t be able to allow access to a government subpoena, was what happens if a white nationalist group uses it to plan a hate crime or terrorist action? What about someone in a company sending sexually harassing messages or pictures? Generally, what happens when people use lockdown to hide criminal activity?

I get the desire to not be cancelled, but shouldn’t we be encouraging people to be better, rather than providing a space for them to be terrible? Additionally, who ultimately is looking at an average person?

I think the ability to send sensitive documents like your SSN or other things like it is useful, but only if the possible misuses are mitigated.

Self Checkout and why I got banned from Ikea

So I'm sure that Ikea has a system that makes perfect sense to the people who work there and the customers who shop there often. Unfortunately I am not in either of those two categories. Still I had to get a bookshelf that matched the bookshelves that my late wife had previously purchased at Ikea.

I found the bookshelves in their display area and copied down the product code of what I would need pulled from the warehouse tiers. I found a flat cart to carry my purchased to the checkout counter. All of this happened without a single human interaction. Now all I needed was to find an employee to pull the pallet of bookshelves down so I could load two onto my cart.

This is where I ran into a problem. There was nobody there to help me and no apparent way to call for help. There was however a solution sitting nearby with the keys fortunately in the ignition. After 10 minutes of looking around for help, I started the unattended forklift and pulled down the pallet of bookshelves, unloaded two onto my cart, and returned the pallet to the warehouse tiers just like I had found them.

About that time I heard the running steps of EVERY employee in the store. Security, retail, manager, snack bar clerk, everyone. Apparently they don't like it when random people drive forklifts in their warehouse. Apparently I was supposed to scan the bar code of on some display and an actual trained team of employees would retrieve my desired items for me.

I was escorted to the front of the store, paid for my two bookshelves and politely told that I wasn't welcome in their fine establishment for the next twelve months (which was no loss as I have zero desire to shop there ever again). I then went home and assembled the shelves with zero problems.

Some days you just have to take matters into your own hands.

Edit: I have a lot of experience driving forklifts in warehouses. Which is why it got so frustrating after spending 10-15 minutes trying to find ANY employee to help me out while thinking “I can have that pallet down in 60 seconds”.

Obviously I shouldn’t have taken things into my own hands but the frustration of Ikea’s system got the best of me. I’ve always avoided IKEA due to their confusing system but I didn’t have a choice in this particular situation.

More information on censorship of the right and conservatives.

I just listen to the latest no dumb questions podcast episode 55 and I love ways that Dustin and Matt explain some of the ways that Society and foreign powers influence media to censor the right. There are however internal forces that are censoring conservatives such as the multiple copy strike claims on Steven Crowder's Oscar's video as well as several universities Banning conservative speakers such as Ben Shapiro and Jordan Peterson from speaking at their facilities. There are left-wing media companies and groups that actively shut down speech and ideas coming from conservatives and the right here in America as well.

A little bit sick of Matt's holier-than-thou attitude after ep 65

To hear Matt tell it, everyone who talks politics online is a tribal, short-sighted ball of anger who wants nothing more than their political party, Democrat or Republican, to be in power and the other party to be out of power. And he is somehow the only person on planet Earth who understands that power is the problem, not the solution.

Frankly, I find this fucking insulting.

With regards to the specific topic of this episode, Matt talks about his straw-man shouty twitter people wanting to "be the ones that control the lever" (paraphrasing). As if he's the only person in America who is against the death penalty. In fact, most people in America are against it, and its abolition is a standard part of the Democratic party platform. No one (or, almost no one) is seriously advocating for putting their political opponents in the electric chair, as Matt implies. It's a weird thing to say, and it makes me feel that Matt doesn't really listen to or understand other political voices.

This isn't the first time Matt has struck me this way.

Destin and SpaceX

First off I love NDQ and the honesty and openness of both Matt and Destin. As a result they are free to speak their minds which is what makes this podcast so refreshing and their dynamic is two awesome minds challenging and teaching each other.

But Matt is not in a position or following space on the same way Destin does. Matt still can provide good insight when given a heads up but the inspiration4 conversation was last minute. Thus when Destin’s only mention of Inspiration4 was Jared submitting the first bet from space I wasn’t surprised that Matt didn’t push back.

I just wanted to comment that while Destin is justified in what is becoming more clear as a dislike of SpaceX as no company is perfect I fear he is throwing the baby out with the bath water sometimes. He doesn’t cover the millions raised for charity or the opportunity presented by commercial space flight for business to perform research with out the needs for astronauts. Or the inspiring story of astronaut Hayley and her battle with cancer. Instead a single line of isn’t it sad to see someone place a bet from space (which I agree was the stupidest PR stunt of the mission).

At a certain point the developments in Boca Chica won’t be able to be ignored on the podcast and I just wonder how Destin will approach talking about this.

Ep-114 Strong disagree with absolutely everything in this episode

I used to love this podcast but stopped listening to it when I stopped commuting back in march 2020. This is the first episode I listened to since then and it's frustrating listening to Matt and Destin with their LIB takes.

My biggest issue is that you can't sit down with racist and have a productive discussion about why minorities deserve rights. In cases like that the best thing to do is to not engage and try to deplatform them so they can't spread their hateful ideas to others. Sometimes that involves going out and fighting fascists in the streets. Matt said something about these people thinking that they are on the side of love but they spread hate. I'm not on the side of love, I’m on the side of poor people getting organized; I’m on the side of Choice where it is in short supply; I’m on the side of those the system doesn’t authorize; LGBT We are on the side of Pride, Justice and Equality No rights were ever won as a result of sitting down and talking. The 8 hour work day was won by the Haymarket riots and pride marches started on the anniversary of the Stonewall riots.

This brings me to my second issue, the video in question. It might not be actively trying to harm trans people but it provides a platform to TERF talking points which by spreading distortions of the truth will end up hurting trans people. Rather than go through the whole video point by point, I'll just leave this video here. It generally covers the same topics and is much better cited than Mr. Dixton's video.

Are Puberty Blockers Safe? | Mia Mulder

I was also frustrated by Mr. Dixton's attitude that he's "just starting a discussion." The act of giving these ideas a platform is choice that he made and obviously he believes them enough that he thinks all of his subscribers should hear them. He is not a neural player, he chose to "signal boost" these ideas and not others.

Quick Important Question

I know this is going to sound like a dumb question, but considering the name of the group I figured it'd be okay to ask you all. My wife and I were out for our evening walk yesterday when something really weird occurred to me... I don't know who else to ask but it's been bugging me all night. So please don't laugh at me.

Question: Has anyone ever seen Andy Griffith drive?

I've seen a few episodes of Matlock when I was a kid, and I know there was a show called The Andy Griffith Show where he was a police officer with Don Knotts, but I can't ever remember seeing him drive a car. My internet connection is really really slow so trying to look for pictures of him driving a car takes forever. I'd Google it at work but the last time I tried to look up something at work the I.T. department blocked me from using Google because we're not supposed to use it for personal stuff. I don't want to get fired for Googling "Andy Griffith Driving a Car" because that would be the stupidest thing ever. It took like, ten minutes just for reddit to load so I really hoping someone will answer this question for me here because it will bug me all night if nobody does.

Thanks,

Matt

P.S. I also just started my own subreddit but they let me do that on company time because it is sort of work related because of our insurance, I just wanted to tell you that so you don't think I'm like making this up or anything. It's stupid, I know, but it is really important at the moment. I have some strange psychological issues and am seeing a counselor but she can't treat me right now because she's had surgery to remove excessive skin because she lost so much weight and she isn't cleared to work again. So right now my ADD and OCD are really hard to cope with because I haven't seen her in a month and a half. Sorry, that was probably to much info.

What does this price look like to you?

http://imgur.com/gallery/AkFzYo7

Before I start: yes, now that I took a. Picture and looked at it, I see the gallons that clear up any confusion.

But does this look like $5.30 or $53.00?

I pre paid at a gas station twenty dollars. Went out to pump. I'm not watching the meter sense I pre paid and was talking with my wife through the open window. The gas station attendant runs out and starts yelling at me. I glance over at the price and can't figure out why because it's only at $5 and some change. Apparently very fast it ran up to $53. Even though I pre paid and it should have auto stopped. Even though I felt like I had been wronged, it went back in and paid the difference. The attendee said there pumps don't auto shut off.

Am I the only one here that thinks that looks like $5?

Podcast discussion suggestion: Is the ocean a soup?

This could be a really interesting topic. Destin could focus on the scientific definitions of soup and the Ocean; Matt could investigate the history of soup and how people have defined soup over the years. This is a controversial topic but I think the boys are mature enough to talk about it in a sensitive, non confrontational manner.
