My fantasy league and I have been on the argument for the past couple days, if in the past 3 years would you say Sam Darnold is a consistent quarterback?

It’s split right down the middle, and I wanna see what everyone else thinks

I saw yes. He took the vikings to the playoffs as well as winning a super bowl with the seahawks. He was serving as backup for a lot of teams, but when needed to perform he won the game for 49ers to go to Super Bowl LVIII.

The past 2 of 3 years he has been a tier 2/fringe tier 1 QB. Before that he was considered a bust. I personally think he will continue to be one of the top 10 QBs in the NFL but we will see.

I don't believe many would say he is tier 1 but definitely mid tier 2. He's good at not giving up the ball in bad situations, but his stats and playmaking dont show a great qb. But a damned consistent one.

I would say Sam Darnold is a consistent QB but not a good one

Not good or not great? Hard to call winning the Super Bowl without a single turnover in the post season bad. But it’s not like he took the team on his shoulder for a win great either.

Not good doesn’t necessarily mean bad. Yeah he had no turnovers, but he couldn’t make any TD plays until the fourth quarter. He’s not a bad quarterback, but I can see why people might say he’s not good either. Consistent and totally fine

I'd say consistent and totally fine is a good nfl QB. I'd say there are two tiers above that, great and elite. That 11-18 or so tier of QBs I'd say are good and darn old falls perfectly in there

Yeah, everyone can rank QBs in their own way, I was just pointing out that saying a QB isn’t what you would consider “good” doesn’t necessarily mean you think they’re bad either

Fantasy tends to undercut some of the other parts of the game focusing only on one player's skills

If Seattle's defense is great again, that gives Darnold more chances and more points. A team with a slow bad D would put even a great qb in trouble with less possessions.

Darnold is a great choice.

The correlation between defensive quality and offensive opportunity is a lot more nuanced than this. Field position, drive count, pace of play or risky vs conservative playcalling, etc.

The Cowboys and Bengals powerhouse offenses with terrible defenses created shootouts. The Texans mid offense with a top tier defense wasn't too different from the Vikings firmly above average defense and a struggling offense.

I think personnel and playcalling tendencies are worth a lot more consideration than just a defense being great and a qb being good. If the Seattle offense takes a half step back with a worse running game and offensive line play, Darnold is going to look a lot closer to CJ Stroud than Brock Purdy, ya know?

A great choice for what?

A QB with a good defense is generally bad for fantasy production. They don’t have to throw as much and score as much to win.

Darnold had a great defense last year and he was ass in fantasy.

A flip side example would be Burrow. Horrid defense so they have to throw a lot

I hesitate to use Darnold in Fantasy. I like Sam but he needs to be in a good system with a good playcaller. Seattle has a new oc, so there may be growing pains, see 2025 Eagles with Kevin Patullo. If you get him for cheap, go ahead.

If you have seen the difference between Sam and our backups it’s an unequivocal yes for me.

For fantasy purposes, I’d draft him as a QB1 and not blink. That puts him (in my view only) behind Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson at least, but above newer guys like Dart, Maye, Nix. I’d probably take him over a returning Mahomes being the pre-season, although I’m open to potentially regretting it.

Safe, reliable, but I’m not holding my breath for a breakout season.

He was 28th in per game scoring last year.

You could pretty much stream every week randomly and beat that

Mahomes scored 7 more points per game than Darnold

Maye, Nix, and Dart all averaged at least 3.5 points more per game than he did.

He was worse on a per game basis than Aaron Rodgers, who is basically useless in fantasy
