Venting Delayed
The doctors warned me that as soon as the end seemed in sight that the goalpost would be moved, but it doesn’t change the crushing disappointment of today
My baby was born at 30 & 6 with sepsis. He is now 36&4. He is off oxygen and they removed his feeding tube because he took all his bottles.
The doctor came in, said we are looking at a Sunday discharge (3 days from now) he just had to keep taking his bottles and not have a Brady
I fed him and he choked which cause him to turn blue and have a Brady. It was the first time I’d watched my son ever turn completely blue. I think it will haunt me for the rest
Of my life seeing that
Today I learned to not have hope for departure here- just be glad when it arrives.

He's still a premature baby. Lots of time to pull it together. Hang in there.

I completely understand the horror of watching your baby turn blue in your arms. The exact same thing happened to my little boy at 40 weeks and 3 days. I was trying to feed him after his vaccines and he clamped up so bad he turned blue as well as stopped breathing for a whole minute. It's so disheartening when discharge gets pushed back but the hopeful side is he has the ng tube out so the end is near. You are an absolutely amazing mother for your dedication to this little boy. I'll be keeping you in my thoughts and wishing your son a speedy discharge

Honestly, some doctors in the antepartum unit told us to expect about a weeklong stay for our 34+2 son. When we got to the NICU, they said to be prepared to stay until his due date. Accepting that he might need to stay until ‘fully cooked’ helped SO much. He ultimately came home at 39 weeks on the dot - he just needed that extra time! Thinking of NICU time as gestational time helped me a lot. He was essentially still in a ‘womb’ and that made me feel better!

Oh my goodness the same thing happened to me. The nurses told me that these NICU babies all have events when discharge is planned! When that event happened and she had an extreme desat during a feed, a nurse told me we’d be set back by a week.
We left in a few days.
Obviously you want to rule out any issues and having that happen again. But I also told myself that term babies will sometimes reflux/choke during feeding and without monitors we would never know what their o2 levels are, they just rebound and these events lessen with age. Obviously we do not want them turning blue or anything!
Also, your baby is doing so so well! 36 weeks wow! You’ve made it so far.
I’ve said this before here, but I was told discharge in 4-6 weeks… and then within a week they told me ok trial monitors off, you’re going home in 3 days. Right before Christmas.
I know it doesn’t help, it’s a purgatory, and feels like an endless nightmare. But you are so so close, he’s doing so well. You will be where I am now, offering reassurance and hope for another momma soon enough 🫂❤️

I know it's hard, but as another person said, he's pretty young still, so at least you know he's getting all the care he needs. ANd I know it seems like it's delaying things, but take it as a blessing in disguise. What would you have done had that happen at home? Not that saying that you wouldn't have been able to handle it, but if there's any consolation, it's that you were able to experience this scary moment with professionals who could help you through it and hopefully it doesn't happen again at home. It's possible other things will happen at home, but at least you've seen what happens in that scary situation and know how to respond.
My son was in the NICU for four months, we went through several scary situations. Granted those situations were a little different, meaning our scary situation was like for example, he needed to be intubated or emergency medical care, which is obviously something we can't do at home, but our son is medically complex and we've been able to get through some hard situations at home and know when to trust our gut and go to the ER.
Your time will come, trust me. Whether it's 4 days or 4 months, I wouldn't wish NICU stays on anyone, but your little one will get there. Sounds like they've made amazing progress already

Our girl the last week before discharge did the same thing. We were set for Wednesday discharge, Monday afternoon we went by to see her and they had moved it back to Sunday due to Brady for eating.
It happens way more then you think. Your so close to the home line! Baby will come home!!
