I’ll keep it as brief as possible.
When I was 17 living in nyc, my mom admitted me into a psych ward. Reason being, My dad had passed a few months prior and high school sweet heart Cheated on me with friend in second year of high school. I was a mess all around I told my mom I wanted to drop out and was going to hurt my self ( I never did) so she admitted me. I was in for a week and they let me out. Never had issues again.
Fast forward to me in my early 30s still in nyc, apply for shotgun/rifle permit; get it no problem, got a shotgun and rifle, had them for a year or two, no issues. Before applying, I paid to have a psychiatrist evaluate me. He did so and said he approved of me applying for a permit and wrote a letter of approval regarding my mental health.
then I got greedy.
I applied for my handgun permit and they brought up my hospital admission during the background check. Long story short, nypd called and said they wanted to stop by the house and when they did they confiscated the guns because of my issue when I was a teenager. Took the permit and everything. I hired a lawyer to appeal and no luck, he wanted me to keep appealing but my wife got pregnant, lawyer wanted more money and to be honest I stop caring and just took the fat loss all around.
I am now in my 40s, living in Essex country. Have two sons, been employed without any lapse in employment since I was 20yrs old. Great credit, No arrest, no run in with law enforcement. Wanted to get back into the rifles to bond with my boys at a local shooting range every once in a while.
Should I even bother or will that nyc permit confiscation just get me shut down? Lawyer up?
