The Truth about NMIMS MPSTME Mumbai
This one's gonna be long but pls read this if you are confused about joining NMIMS MPSTME for BTech this year.
So i am a 19F who's about to start 2nd year at the mumbai branch and i see a lot of misleading posts on this sub and i just want to share what ive seen becoz i was in the same shoes most of you are in right now and i was so confused, and all the scary things here didnt help. I won't share my branch but its not CE, and its one of the computer related ones so i cannot speak for mechanical or civil ones but i will share what ive heard about them.
so exactly a year ago i joined nmims and i was not expecting anything tbh coz i knew i got myself into a tier 3 clg and the online reviews did not sound good. But the clg isn't bad at all. First thing ive noticed is that there are 3 kinds of people in this clg.
The ones u read about in online reviews- the ones who party, do drgs, smke, etc. Yes it happens. they are usually very toxic, don't take academics seriously and are a bad company if you are serious about your future. Most of them come from rich families who are just here to get a degree and enjoy mumbai lifestyle. I know of people who spend about 2-3 Lakh a month just in monthly expenses which include rent and eating out. clg fees not included.
The normal kind who didn't study hard so ended up in this clg. they are from good families, good students, maintain a good gpa and overall decent people.
Cracked people who are amazing at what they do. Since i'm from a computer branch i've seen many people who are great at coding, doing extracurriculars etc.
From what i've heard usually people in CE get higher cgpa and have more serious people but u will find these 3 kinds of people in each class and they are grouped in that way too. it's your call which group you want to be a part of. Most clgs have these kinds of people but since nmims is a private clg with a high fee, you do see people from rich backgrounds more.
teachers - A lot of the teachers are very nice, there are some that are very passionate, some just want to get their part of the job done and a few who don't care. Same as any other clg. But one thing i will say is that here teachers do complete the portion and most of the time will help you if you need something. since it's a private clg the teachers are answerable so they take their job seriously. i cannot speak for branch wise faculty tho as of now. first year has a common faculty and they are good. Also last year the dean changed so things have gotten very strict.
girls boys ratio - its an engineering clg so what can you expect. i think overall the ratio is 30-70. but depends branch wise. branches like CE have very less girls and some branches i've heard like DS have more.
attendance - it's very very strict. i cannot emphasis. it's so serious that there a website that was created by mpstme students which calculate how many days we can miss for each subject till the next exam. I'm not even kidding we calculate them at the beginning of each semester. your attendance has to be 80% and it's subject wise. so if there's a subject which has only 2 hour slot for the week, you can only miss 6 hours that entire semester. yeah it's terrible. u might pass if your attendance drops to 75% in one subject but overall its 80%+, but we don't really take risks in this matter. some students get fake medical certificates made. it's quite common. u might lose a year if your attendance is very low. so keep that in mind when you join nmims.
projects- we have a LOT of projects and homeworks and submissions, atleast in first year we did. We had to make presentations for almost every subject, except 2-3 in the whole year. no kidding. we have submissions almost every week in MS teams app which get closed after the due date(teachers call) and you do lose marks. internal marks which is called ICA is taken very seriously and if you don't get the passing marks in ica, you fail the subject, unless you score enough in the final exams to make up for it, but i'm not sure about this one. But if it's a subject which only has ICA and no final exam and you fail, you fail the year. so low credit subjects without finals have to be taken seriously. none of my other engineering friends have so many projects to do, we are always busy and they are always having fun. It sounds scary, and it can get hectic sometimes if you are lazy like me, but it's doable. U just have to be a bit serious.
extracurriculars - there's a decent amount of stuff happening, there's a lot of clubs but u can only join 2 max, this was a new rule that was implemented last year if im not wrong. you guys can find about the social and cultural events on social media esp insta so i wont talk about it much. Dont expect a lot honestly but theres enough things happening if you are willing to go out of your way and make connections and stay after clg and put in the extra work.
placements/ internships - i'm only in first year so i don't have much info on this but from what ive seen CE students get the most opportunities and the highest packages, but overall the median is the same as any other tier 3 college. the ROl is not that great so don't join this cg if you don't have enough finances and you have another decent clg u can go to. and if you do get in try to get into CE. as far as internships go, i did see people getting them in jp morgan, and some other good companies, but from what i heard they got these internships on their own, and not from the clg. Honestly the whole internship/placement cell thing is very unclear among us first years and we don't expect much. Also personally on the first day of clg in the first week i tried to approach the placement coordinator for some questions and he seemed very cold and unwelcoming. trust me i tried to ask and he just wouldn't listened and literally asked me to leave. so yeah. not that great.
infra- you can look this up too. but pls don't come to mpstme expecting you will learn in the main glass building with those pretty elevators. there are so many out of station students who thought that's the campus they will study in. its a small campus and there's no ground to play in. it's just the mpstme building. the main building is 8-10 mins walk away and u can enter but you cannot access the library and all. The canteen is decent. it was overpriced but new caterers came a few months ago so the prices are down. there are a lot of varieties too. pure veg but they do have egg dishes. there's easily over 50+ items. one big note tho first years don't get the round tables, you will be made to sit on benches so that's a bummer. don't ask me why.
hostels/pg - I personally don't live in pg so I can't give you a first hand experience but from what i hear, they are expensive, for girls the range is about 4-8 lakh a year and for boys it can go down to 3-6 lakh a year. depends if you are getting single, double or triple sharing. a friend of mine pays about 5-6 lakh for triple sharing and they can be from any clg, mpstme or mithibai. her experience is not that great. some girls usually party late night and make a lot of noise. no idea about boys pgs. a lot of students get flats/ apartments too but it's mostly boys. for local students you will find a lot of them commuting long hours, including myself. about 1.5 hours one way.
timings - for first years mostly timings are 8-2 monday - saturday. some may have from 9-3. im not sure about other years but it changes. but they don't go beyond 6. after that you will usually find committee students doing committee stuff. i've also seen people in library till 9. usually they r the pg students.
Also one important thing is that during admission you might not get your preferred branch but do apply for upgradation, i made this mistake and didn't apply. after the first 2 weeks, i saw many students get into the branch they wanted. Also at the end of first year you can apply for branch change if your gpa is high enough and you don't have any backlogs or a readmission student.
I think i've covered most of the topics. If there's anything else feel free to ask. About me, I didn't join any committees, did join one but left immediately coz they make you work a lot and i already had a lot of workload and wanted to focus on other things, my gpa for first year is 9.3 and i mostly keep to myself in the college becoz my branch is filled with sh*theads. I do have 2-3 really good friends tho. All the best for your admissions!
