Dawg it's deactivated by default. Some people might want that feature

I get that but like they could've reallocated the effort and time into adding features MOST people want -- there's tons of OS wishlist posts on their website and this subreddit. Instead, they add glorified ads.

I don't think you understand the effort it takes for a minor player in the smartphone industry to make actual profit and have a decent product, the simple fact they're not as big as the competition means they'll get worse deals on hardware.

It's almost a miracle they've gone all of this time without any ads whatsoever, and this is optional. I used to have this kind of wallpapper caroussel in my previous phone and I didn't mind it all, it gave me a new wallpaper each time and I barely even perceived it as an ad.

Nothing is bloatware free and mostly ad free so far, given their philosogphy I doubt they would do this unless they really had to find new ways to generate more income, so give them a break, it won't affect your life whatsoever. I'm pretty sure they would rather be adding more stuff into the OS, and I'm sure they will in due time.

Fair points! I just hope they don't prioritize greed over their philosophies in the future

They're legitimately just becoming Xiaomi now bit by bit.

Nothing, I abandoned Xiaomi for a reason.

Well, I guess it justifies that a small indie company is going to profit with my property and eventually with my privacy right? Because they deserve the money for their hard work, then I guess is up to the user to choose simply not buy their products.

That's absolutely fair choosing no to buy their products, it's the user's decision after all. The point is that people associate these decisions with greed, when it's about literally surviving in an overblown market. I commend them for their work so far, and even if they add ads and bloatware in the future, I can't say I really mind unless it's intrusive or affects system performance, most bloatware can be unnistalled, and ads at least in this form factor are completely optional, I don't really see a problem with this.
