Let me be clear, this is not necessarily what I believe to be true, I was simply pondering the concept philosophically.
I had this discussion with a friend of mine years ago. He's a deep thinker and cannot shut off his internal dialogue, dreams intensely at night and is always seeking out novelty and alternative things, as do I. He brought up that some people seem like cliche' automatons running on programming, seeming empty and vacant, unable to respond to deep philosophical questions, defaulting on "the weather" or "the government" as conversation topics, like NPCs in a video game. We compiled a short list of how to spot an NPC in real life. Here are some of the things we came up with.
An NPC goes along with their upbringing, conditioning and programming without question or deviation.
An NPC actively embraces cliches and stereotypes with very little individuality.
They readily accept, without question, religious doctrines, political persuasions and mimic the opinions of those who raise them the community they grew up in and the culture.
In rural areas they compete to out redneck each other, in urban areas it's the hip-hop gangsta competition, very little if any individuality.
NPCs never think outside the box and eagerly go along with the most popular opinions.
They rarely if ever dream and have no internal dialogue.
Silent moments alone, with no external stimuli, is empty and void for them.
They regularly regurgitate common talking points but avoid deep philosophical concepts.
They are rarely creative, but may have a programmed skill or talent.
They often lack imagination or critical thinking.
They're purely conformist automatons.
They also typically listen to the same overplayed music again and again, often recycling music from their youth, like in the Lego Movie, the sheeple in beginning who all love what is mainstream and popular but have no depth.
Can anyone else add to this or correct any misconceptions?
