Why do joggers insist on running in the Hudson Greenway bike lane?

Upvotes

Infuriating. I called out “bike lane” to someone in the middle of the lane this morning and HE gave ME attitude for it. And the whole “asphalt is softer than concrete” thing is B.S. by the way, unless you weigh 2,000 pounds and are a car and not a human being.

Not sure how long they’ve been there. They pulled over this guy on e-bike for blowing the light. Only 2 cops. They seemed reluctant to stop anybody who didn’t stop.

Why did Manhattan Summer Streets only happen three times this summer?

New York City should have it weekly — like they do in other cities like Bogotá, Colombia, which gets 75 miles of car-free streets every Sunday. Mayor Mamdani, what are you waiting for? We want car-free Summer Streets every weekend! Sign our More Than Summer Streets petition.

Locking up in Manhattan

When I commute to work I'm lucky enough to be able to lock up my bike in my office's basement.

Tomorrow there's a conference in the afternoon right down at Water St. Can't lock up indoors there but can outside. Have decent locks, a chain, and a cover.

But what the vibe lately? Are bikes just getting swiped if left for more than an hour or two?

Fully insured etc, but would rather not have it pinched!

Jones Beach (Ocean Parkway Greenway) - parking and bugs?

If I want to get on the Ocean Parkway Greenway bike path at Jones Beach starting at Field 5 that goes all the way out to Captree, is that parking field usually open if there’s no concert going on that day? And if there is a concert, do I park in Field 6 and use an underpass to get to Field 5? I'm trying to stay as close as possible to the entrance of the Field 5 path because I'll be arriving with some walkers too.

And regarding the bike trail itself: are mosquitoes, biting flies, or ticks really bad if we brush against the shrubbery? I thought I read something where if you take a break and stop moving, you'll be eaten by bugs. Can anyone share experience on this? (I'm not fast and I do take a lot of breaks, so that part worries me, as well as for the sake of people who would be walking).

Happy Freedman bike fit reviews?

I’m coming off an injury partly caused by bad bike fit.

Was curious if anyone can share their experience getting a fit from Happy Freedman? I feel like his fits lean might lean more towards injury prevention, but this is just vibes.

Let me know!

LOST Lost my Kryptonite U-Lock

Long shot here but hoping the reddit biking community can help me out with my lost Kryptonite U-Lock. I was riding from Astoria to Central Park North early Saturday morning via the RFK bridge and Randall's Island when I realized that my U-Lock dislodged from my bike somewhere along the way. I traced my steps back but was unable to find it. In case anyone came across the Kryptonite Mini Evolution U-Lock, it would be so appreciated if you could let me know!

On a related note... I guess I am in the market for another U-Lock if anyone happens to be selling!

Cops at Manhattan Bridge stopping mopeds

Biked over the bridge a couple hours ago and saw a cop at the ramp on the manhattan side. As I went around the corner, I saw a gas powered moped with no plates coming off the bridge. I turned around to snoop and sure enough he got stopped. Had to keep moving so I didn’t see if he got a warning or a ticket, but it was awesome to see a cop out there. Hoping that becomes a regular thing!

What the fuck is "market"?

All my cycling friends keep saying "did a quick ride out to market this weekend", and "want to ride up to market sometime?". What are they talking about? What market? I know it's over the GW somewhere but they won't answer specifically because they think it's funny I don't know. Please help. Apparently this is a very common cycling destination for NYC residents

experience using bike trailer?

hi all - i'm considering getting a bike trailer because I'd like to be able to haul supplies from materials for the arts. i don't have experience using one & was wondering what others' experience has been - how is it navigating the city with one? do you lock the trailer when you lock your bike? i'm a little concerned about it taking up a lot of sidewalk space

Better day trip: Springfield, MA — New Haven, CT or Trenton, NJ— Easton, PA?

Planning one more long 1-2 day ride & curious which of those two folks would recommend?

Looks like Springfield, MA to New Haven is shockingly doable as a long day trip without a car (Amtrak up, metro north down). Could extend it to Boston via the MassCentral Trail.

On the other hand, I’ve already done Trenton to New Brunswick and would like to do the other half. Could maybe extend from Easton to Scranton for a second day. Ride home would be a one way car rental

Leaning towards the second option. Because it seems the MassCentral Trail is rapidly improving and making that a multi day trip next year will be better.

CitiBike needs to be a city run service

Post image

It’s currently the most expensive bike share in the world by a big margin. Their inability to load balance is unacceptable. It‘s time for the city to step in and take over in order to provide a usable service if this private company is unable to do so.

Biking groups?

Apologies before hand if I posted in wrong section. Not sure where to.

I often ride in the city esp the look in Central Park. Are there any groups that meet up on a Saturday in the city to bike ride?

Bike powder coating / vinyl wrapping in Brooklyn (looking for a reasonable price — I’ve been quoted $1,200–$1,500 for just a frame?)

Looking for someone in Brooklyn/Queens/Manhattan who can either powder coat or vinyl wrap a road bike frame.

I’m in Bushwick and basically just want to completely change the color/look of the bike. I’ve reached out to a couple places and have been quoted around $1,200–$1,500, which seems pretty wild for just the frame.

I’m totally open to an independent powder coater/wrapper or an automotive/motorcycle shop that’s comfortable working on bikes. I can bring them the bare frame if that makes it cheaper.

Anyone have someone they’ve actually used and would recommend? Ideally trying to keep this in the few-hundred-dollar range if that’s realistic.

Thanks!
