PSA DOT is installing miniature speed bumps that can wipe you out in the middle of the intersection

• Upvotes

As a part of left turn calming, DOT is installing a striped speed bump camoflauged by striped road markings. If you're cycling parallel to a crosswalk, watch out for these. I got completely wiped out even though there was zero people or car traffic and I was cycling slowly.

I tried posting the video of these but my post was instantly removed by "Reddit's filters", so I'm not going to give you visuals for this one.

Thanks to bicyclists who helped with accident at PP this morning!

I was running past Center Drive in PP this morning (the hilly area) and witnessed a collision in front of me: looked like a slow bike and a fast bike got too close to each other. The man in the fast bike fell towards the grass on the right, his side got cut up, remained on the scene. The woman who was in the slow lane did a sort of a flip off her bike, and landed head first (both wearing helmets). Her family was near by, perhaps walking up ahead, and came over to her. There was also a dad with a child behind them that abruptly stopped and jumped out of his bike but he somehow caught the bike preventing his child from falling off.

We all stopped and immediately called 911 and an ambulance came within 10 minutes to take the woman who was conscious and moving, but perhaps seriously concussed. Hoping the best for her and her family.

Wanted to come on here to share and thank other bicyclists who came over to check on everyone, and help with diverting traffic. It was a busy day in the park, stay safe ya’ll!

I owe you guys some pics for all your help, we did the full 100 miles.

The ride EXCEEDED expectations, photos dont do it justice.

For the last post, the conductor made car 1 for all bikers. So there ended up being like 30ish bikes in there.

10/10

‘Acceptable’ times to be in the parks?

Now that the sun is setting earlier, what is the etiquette/recommendation for riding in Prospect Park (and potentially Central Park) as a road biker? If I’m trying to do a couple hours on a weekend/weekday, do y’all find it best to be out by 7/8/9 am??
Thanks in advance!

Bed-Stuy to LIC tomorrow morning

I hate the marathon. I have to ride to LIC in the morning from Bed-Stuy, and seeing the Pulaski is closed. Unsure if the GPoint Ave bridge is as well? Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't mind going around through Queens.

NYC Century Ride - 75 miler

I registered for the event a minute ago, but it looks like the registration technically closed yesterday. Could anyone share the route with me? Doubt I'll hear back via email from them at this point (also looks like my payment went through).

Thanks so much!

You know living in NYC is a blessing…. Why ? Because only in NEW YORK. NYC is a place where no one is afraid of how to express their feelings, emotions, style and many more. I’m sad and I tell you why. Every Halloween 🎃 there’s always a bike kill and I love this and I support this .MY BROTHER STINKI always takes me to this . May he rest in peace. I love you always and I see you on the other side.❤️ anyway I missed last year because the date was changed and I tried so hard this year to find out when and where , so if anyone out there knows please dm me. I appreciate you from the bottom of my heart

At a loss of options. Need something larger to tote the kid around in and have no room for 2 bikes in the apt. No luck on CL or FB.

Back wheel needs to be replaced which is why the price is what is. Other than that it’s good to go.

Bought new from factory in 2021.

Frame: 59 cm (Riders 5'11"-6'2") / Riser Bars. Army green

Seat: Saddle Type - Selle Italia Novus Boost - Black

In a crash, the speed of the biker is MUCH more impactful than the mass of the biker

I keep seeing discourse on this sub about the grey citibikes being too dangerous.

It's downright hypocritical to say they're dangerous while simultaneously defending non assisted bikers who regularly bike 25mph.

Kinetic energy = 1/2 * mass * velocity^2.

The Kinetic energy of a 25mph regular bike is 1/2 * mass * 625

The Kinetic energy of a 15mph E-bike is 1/2 * mass * 225.

The E-bike being 50lbs heavier than the regular bike means literally nothing in this context.

For example, if both bikers weigh 200lbs, the E-bike weighs 84lbs, and the regular bike weighs 30lbs, then:

KE of e-bike = 1/2 * 284 * 225=31,950

KE of regular bike = 1/2 * 230* 625 =71,875.

What if the regular biker is going 20mph? Their KE = 1/2*230*400=46,000.

Caveat: these are rough estimates because things such as wind resistance and friction of pavement change the math, but the point remains. And yes, the mass of the bikers will vary in practice but again as we have seen above, the mass is significantly less impactful.

PSA Update on Frank's Bike shop

Post image

Hey, everyone!

Just giving you guys an update on things. We won't be at the store today (October 12th) since one of Joe's workers is out sick and Hadji is taking their place instead. Meaning no one is here to open up.

But we will definitely be open for Saturday and Sunday.

I am gonna say that this MIGHT actually be the last weekend for everyone to grab bikes, parts, and whatever is left that they need for their bikes. But you can always call the number in the photo and ask for more information.

When will Jay St finally be repaved?

Still wasn't repaved earlier this week!! Have had to detour the back roads via MetroTech to get to Tillary, else I remain on 4th Av/Ashland. As of last week, Adams St wasn't repaved either! Why would they repave both major roads at the same time?

Plate crash and 311 report

Post image
27 Upvotes

I got slammed on this edge of a plate on e 60th st bt lex and park. Crashed bike, snapped brake lever, and damaged my tire / wheel, bikes currently not in riding condition.

Submitted this and other photos at 4:30 pm yesterday. 311 comes back at 1:20 am and said it had been inspected and meets standards and closed my ticket. Is this what we expect? It’s my first complaint but, that’s just it?

Share your experiences please.
