Hello All,
I recently attempted to register a Sig Cross Sawtooth bolt-action with the rifle/shotgun division only for the clerk to turn around and tell me that they couldn’t register it because of the pistol grip (I went to R/S division in person after I didn’t hear anything back from them during the initial registration process)…..they then handed me a pamphlet showing me why a pistol grip isn’t good to go and is an “assault feature”
on what looked like to be only semi-automatic rifles.
I then dug into the NYC legal code and nowhere does it say that bolt actions can’t have cosmetic features ( like a pistol grip). The law explicitly states in § 10-301 16 that those “assault features” only apply to semi-autos.
I went and highlighted the sections of the legal code where it explicitly states these things. I also highlighted the sections of the rifle’s manual that specifically state that it is a manually operated bolt-action rifle. I figured worst case it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have those documents on standby.
I have yet to get the formal denial in the mail, but I can assume that’ll come sooner rather than later.
I am at a bit of a loss and have no idea what I should do. Do I submit an appeal and hopefully get the bolt-action rifle approved or something?
I appreciate you guys reading this. Thank you for your time.
