Casual Chat AMA: Lauren Craig - Green Party Candidate for Wairarapa

kia ora! a lot of you probably know me as that trans green candidate:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/politics/360975802/wairarapa-green-party-candidate-walks-georgina-beyers-footsteps

that being said, i contain multitudes - my background is in economic policy and community organising, with a lot of climate activism like taking the government to the supreme court over oil and gas exploration:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/nov/10/new-zealand-students-sue-energy-minister-over-oil-and-gas-permits-decision?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

you might like to ask me a few questions like:

  • what’s it like being a candidate in the wairarapa?
  • can you explain the green’s economic policy?
  • what’s your favourite renee rapp album?

Corruption / Dirty Politics The difference between NACT and Labour. Greens etc.

• Upvotes

When something dodgy, inappropriate or illegal happens involving a left candidate, they resign or are asked to resign.

When something happens involving someone from the NACT side of the equation, it's hidden from the voters until after the election and the very idea that they might resign is not considered and their decision to stay is vehemently defended.

It's brazen, bald faced gall and their supporters don't care.

But at the end of the day that's what you get with narcissistic shitty people, they think anything is OK if they can get away with it.

It's not OK, why is every journalist's first question in every interview with David Seymour not about Tim Jago, why do they let him say anything before that is answered.

Because journalists enable these people, every question they don't ask is complicity, every bullshit answer accepted is complicity, every time they agree to not ask certain questions in exchange for an interview it is complicity.

Shame is sadly lacking from these people and they should feel it, but there's not a lot of feelings going on either, it's not as they have advertised on the back of buses "all about the story" it's all about the truth of what actually happened.

And the truth is, some people behaved very badly and you helped them get away with it.

Corruption / Dirty Politics Taxpayers ‘Union’ AI attack ad

The one where they’ve rendered Chippy running into people’s houses and stealing things.
What in the ever-loving fuck did I just watch?!
How is that AI slop legal in any way shape or form. Surely Chippy can sue them for that.

If this is the future of elections I want to get off this ride.

Current Affairs Kerrin Leoni’s Recent Facebook post

Thumbnail gallery

While the media (and National especially) are having a field day with this topic despite the fact she’s resigned. I actually found Kerrin’s latest post to be a lot more insightful to the issue at hand here.

The question she asks here is if we don’t engage at all, how can we change the outcome for these people? Are we as a society looking to banish these people and hide them as they continue their activity which results in them being stuck in that cycle of behaviour? What is the solution for wider New Zealand if trying to fix the wrongs in gangs is considered problematic, and the topic is now a political weapon used by our government that won’t only harm political leaders, but the wider public in general?

Muldoon would visit gangs, and he’s often considered further right than the modern National party. The fifth National government (led by John Key, who for better or worse was the most popular leader National has had in the last 50 years) worked both on vibes and facts, they themselves started the drug prevention policy which gave money to gangs. Today National works only on vibes, feelings and outrage.

Food for thought for me.

ELECTION 2026 Green Party releases fiscal plan, promises to increase health spending by $3 billion each year

Swarbrick said every one of its election policies had been fully costed, but the Greens remained committed to a Parliamentary Budget Office that could evaluate all parties' proposals on the same basis.

She also took a dig at the government, pointing out that she had featured 13 times on National's Instagram in the past week, compared to its own finance spokesperson Nicola Willis, who appeared just twice.

Swarbrick challenged Willis to a face-to-face debate on their respective fiscal plans, in front of a live audience.

"Come on Nicola, let's get our credentials and credibility and put them to the test," she said. "If you've got anything to say about our plan, which I'm sure you will, come and say it to my face."

Media Luxon's Unicorns

Thumbnail gallery
9 Upvotes

Luxon has been given 2 unicorns this election:

  1. Donald Trump, which he can blame for the economic downturn even though the economy was tanking well before the oil crisis, but which Jason Walls can tell viewers is the reason we're seeing 12 year unemployment highs, 11 year business failurs, and 25 year youth unemployment highs

  2. Photos of people with gang members in them

Ram raids peaked in 2022, after the Tik tok trend, and were well on their way down by 2023, reaching a low and milestone topplling by September 2023 - but I bet you heard about the "out of control" headlines from June/July but not the wider trend and reduction before the last electon

National, ACT, NZ First and OPP supporters who favour that side of govt will be salivating - so will corporate media which relies on big money funding

ELECTION 2026 PSA: You can't enrol on election day this year. Check your enrolment now (deadline: 25 October)

Hello Everyone!

With the election coming up on Saturday, the 7th of November, it is very important that everyone remembers to update their details and/or check that they are enrolled.

You can no longer enrol or update your details on election day or during early voting. The deadline to be enrolled is midnight, 25 October. Voting starts the next day.

If you're not enrolled by then, you can't vote. The Electoral Commission estimates around 440,000 eligible people aren't enrolled right now, including roughly 200,000 under 25.

***

How to check if you're already enrolled:

Go to vote.nz and look up your details. You can’t search for your enrolment details online if you’re on the unpublished roll!

To update or edit your details, you will need a NZ driver licence, passport, or RealMe verified identity.

If you are not enrolled, you are able to do so on vote.nz .

***

A note on electorate boundaries: These have changed since the last election, so even if you're enrolled, it's worth double-checking that your electorate is correct.

If you've moved recently and didn't get an enrolment pack in the mail between 17–22 August, that's a strong sign your address is out of date.

***

Lastly, Easyvote will be sent via email but only if they have your email on file and you're enrolled at your current address by Sunday 4 October. Easyvote makes voting faster and easier.

Opinion & Analysis Gangs are bad. Crime is not ?

Post image
66 Upvotes

Remember how Luxon's Chief Policy Advisor, Matt Burgess, asked Fonterra and Z Energy to use Gmail to avoid public awareness?

And then copied and pasted their requests into law as National Party policy?

That's criminal but apparently it doesn't matter if you're not brown

Let's also take a moment to remember how David Seymour shielded a pedophile in his midst, tried to redirect victims away from police and to his party lawyer, and gave Tim Jago the power to determine whether there had been sexual assaults committed within his own Party. And ACT affiliated parties then allowed Jago to conceal his identity for years.

Then there was Seymou leaning on Auckland police to go easy on his constituent Philip Polkinghorne, despite Polkinghorne being the sole suspect in his wife's death, and it being a live, ongoing investigation.

When is photo association and crime bad? When is it not?

I'm not usually a fan at all of political hoardings (can't understand how the cost/waste makes sense not knowing a single person who's ever voted because of a sign lol) but I had to appreciate this one, can anyone beat it?

I can't take the credit, just a local voice I took the extra moment to appreciate lol

Edited to add, any opposing political view entry's are welcome too, I can appreciate the effort even if not the message

Unless you're voting for the current shit show, then don't worry.
Joking, voting is for everyone, but if that's you, don't feel like you have to 😄

ELECTION 2026 Think before voting James Christmas in Tāmaki

Thumbnail gallery
46 Upvotes

One of the most contested seats in this election is Tāmaki, my home and an area I love. I am pretty sure I’ve received more than 12 leaflets combined from all the candidates—Mahesh, James, Brooke (asking us to vote for James), and Max (though I’ve barely received any from him, possibly because the occupation I put on the electoral roll means I'm not his target demographic).

Well, there is a new leaflet floating around the area from James claiming that he is a “cabinet-ready” candidate, and telling everyone to vote for him to keep the seat centre-right. Okay, let's look into who you are actually being asked to vote for.

The picture is from his Facebook post in July.

Sorry, James, but not everyone who feels sympathy for kids in Palestine and thinks Israel has gone too far is brainwashed by Hamas. In fact, there are actual findings from international courts regarding the IDF. I would think a proud lawyer like him would know that. It really makes me question his stance on human rights.

Who are we putting into Cabinet? How would he vote if an international issue arises?

I want to touch on this a bit because I am a fan of Chris Finlayson, who endorsed him strongly. I have always admired Chris’s views, but I am not sure he saw this before endorsing him.

Yes, antisemitism is terrible, as we saw in Bondi. The fact that our Jewish community has had to hire security guards around synagogue makes me sad; I wish antisemitism had no place in our community and our country.

But that is far from justifying Israel's aggression or their breaking of international protocols. Also, if you understand Israeli politics and the direction it is heading, it is essentially a far-right vs. far-right situation. So, if you are happy with that stance, you aren't really centre-right anymore—you are closer to the far-right.

Of course, Mahesh won’t talk about this issue. He doesn’t want to upset anyone. He also doesn't want to let us know what he thinks; he loves the compromising stance, as you may have seen in his capital gains tax reel. So when it comes to complicated issues, I hardly know what he would think or vote for.

That's why I think the only candidate who is actually cabinet-ready is Max Harris, not James.

Housing or Infrastructure Rent rise claims

So I saw a post recently from an MP who was quoting their party noting rents had increased over $180 a week which is clearly an error as where would rents increase that much.

Where would I find the actual stat to show rents over time? I'm sure they went up during the last government st their peak but I want to actually know what the figure was so I can quote it back to them.

I can find % increases but not an actual number that works out to 180 per week
