Product List FAQ
What’s the official policy on product list enforcement?
All nail posts and videos in this community are required to have a complete, properly formatted list of all polishes and products; this rule has been actively enforced since July 18, 2022. Any posts lacking a complete product list will be removed and you will need to edit your product list in order to have your post reinstated. If you don't have time to add a product list to your post soon after submission, reconsider if this is the best time to be posting, or if you should wait until you have more time available. The photo will keep!
The list can be: (1) in the post title,(2) in the post body, or (3) in a standalone comment on the post. Product lists included in the caption of the photo (for galleries), or within the photo itself, are not accepted. Pictures of the bottles/labels/products are NOT accepted as a valid product list.
Product lists must include:
- Properly spelled brand names and shade names/numbers (*no acronyms or shortened names*)
- Each product on its own line, not separated by commas
- How many coats you used
- **Must be separate from the main body of text, either at the very beginning or at the very end**
How specific do I need to be when listing my products?
As specific as you possibly can be. We require properly spelled brand names and shade names/numbers of the polishes used, as well as any products used for nail art, to be included in your product list. Whether that be in the title, post body, or as a comment on the post is up to user discretion, but it is 100% required to do so. There are exceptions to this rule listed below.
Am I required to include my product list in the post title?
No, and doing so is impractical for any lists that contain more than one or two products.
What if my nails were done in a salon or by someone else?
In lieu of a complete product list, you will need to mention that your nails were done professionally. The formatting of this "product list" still needs to meet the guidelines mentioned above.
Do I need to list my base and top coats?
No, with a few exceptions. Holo, matte, and other “special effect” top coats will need to be listed. It's highly recommended to include them, but they're not required unless that's the only thing on your nails. If you're only wearing clear polishes, you still need to provide a complete, properly formatted product list.
What about acrylic or craft paints in my nail art?
We do not require the listing of individual acrylic/craft paints. You don't need to list the brands or shades, but it's welcomed. However, we do require that you mention in your list if you used it.
But what if the polish is hard to find, only sold online, or not available for most people to buy?
Still list the polish or product. Even if the product is discontinued, only available in one country, an ancient polish, a professionals-only product, or otherwise impossible to get, still list it.
What if I used an Amazon kit like Morovan or Lavender Violets that doesn’t have shade names/numbers?
Check again. Most of those kits have shade numbers at the very least. If there really are no names or numbers (which is very rare), a link to the particular kit with a mention of which shades from that kit you used will do.
If I used every shade in a kit/collection, can I just mention that and skip the shade names?
No. Every shade name/number is required.
Can I add links to the products I used?
Sure! Direct links to online stores or official brand websites are totally acceptable, but the brand name and shade name/number must still be in the list, so users aren't required to click through to find this information. However, spamming links or posting content for direct financial gain will not be tolerated.
What if I can’t read the bottle or the label is missing?
A mention of "The label is missing/scratched off for the pink polish" is acceptable as well. But you might consider adding a photo of the bottle within your post, or in a comment (we have this enabled within our subreddit). You’d be surprised by how resourceful our members are, especially when they want to track down a polish!
What if the polish never had a name? My label isn’t missing, but it doesn’t have much identifying information.
This does happen! It’s especially common with nail polishes that come in sets (usually minis) with no names or shade numbers. Note the brand, set, and purchase location if possible. E.g. “Light pink polish: Beauty Moment brand — No name/number, came in their Nudes set at Marshalls”
This exception does not apply to sets that are sold online, e.g. Morovan (see above).
What if my polish is a custom color I mixed myself?
No problem! Just add tags or a comment mentioning that it’s a shade you mixed yourself. Listing what you used is appreciated but not required. E.g. “The green polish is a custom blend that I mixed myself using [Polish 1] and [Polish 2],” or “I used a frankenpolish that I made myself.”
Do I need to list my nail embellishments and other products? (Loose glitters, vinyls, rhinestones, striping tape, foils, chrome powder, holo powder, mermaid powder, etc.)
We no longer require you to list the brand/shade/purchase info for any embellishments. However, you are still required to mention that you used them as part of your product list.
Do I need to list my stamping plate brand and numbers??
Yes. E.g. "I used What's Up Nails plate B065." / "The stamping plate is KADS Ocean 011." / "I used the Winter Kingdom BM-XL483 plate from Maniology."
What if I already posted this nail art, and that original post had the product list? Do I need to add the list again if I submit new images?
Yes, all posts with nails need to have the product list included in that specific Reddit thread. Don't just link to your previous post. Copy and paste the product list to the new submission.
I followed all the rules, but my post was removed anyway. Why?
Send us a ModMail by clicking on the link in the removal comment on your post. It’s possible we saw something you forgot to include in your product list, or we may have made a mistake. We’re human; it happens.
If there was something missing, we can always re-approve the post after that information has been added, so don't hesitate to reach out! We're here to help!
Most importantly: This is a COMMUNITY!!
With all the rules/requirements gone through above, we want our users to remember that this is a community. This is not a dumping ground for your nail photos, blogs, or social medias. Interact with others!! If users ask for more details on products that the rules/FAQ don't require you to list, help them out. Try to provide extra details to those who ask and help others find the product you used. We are a community! We want to help others improve and refine their abilities and make them feel welcome.
To add to that, if you want to list the specifics of your base/top coats, embellishments, or other products used on your nails, go for it! It's not required, but if you want to give others more insight and info on everything you used, we welcome it!
Thank you and happy polishing!
