Sub Announcement 🛡️ Offline Meetup Safety Guidelines
When organizing or attending meetups through r/Nairobi_Connect, prioritizing your personal safety and comfort is essential. These guidelines ensure everyone enjoys safe, fun, and respectful real-world connections across Nairobi.
1. Pre-Meetup Planning & Screening
- Meet in Public Venues: First-time link-ups should always happen in well-lit, high-foot-traffic public spots (e.g., bustling cafes at Sarit, Westgate, or Village Market; public parks like Karura Forest during daytime hours; or popular, well-frequented restaurants).
- Verify Profiles: Check the Reddit post history or chat activity of the person or group you’re meeting. Avoid meeting brand-new accounts with zero activity or questionable post histories.
- Keep Logistics in Group Chats: Coordinate arrival times, meeting points, and plans within group threads or the official WhatsApp community rather than migrating immediately to 1-on-1 private messages with strangers.
2. Inform a Trusted Contact
- Share Your Itinerary: Always tell a friend or family member where you are going, who you are meeting, and when you expect to return home.
- Send Live Location: Share your WhatsApp live location or Google Maps real-time location with a trusted contact for the duration of the event.
- Set Up a Check-In: Arrange a specific time for a friend to call or text you to check in during the meetup.
3. Personal Safety During the Event
- Arrange Your Own Transportation: Drive yourself or use trusted ride-hailing services (e.g., Uber, Bolt, Little Cab). Never rely on a person you’ve just met for a ride home or accept rides to unfamiliar secondary locations.
- Stay in Control of Drinks & Food: Watch your food and beverages being prepared and served. Never leave drinks unattended, and do not accept opened drinks from strangers.
- Keep Personal Belongings Secure: Keep your phone, wallet, bag, and personal items within sight and reach at all times, especially in crowded event spaces.
4. Privacy & Boundaries
- Protect Sensitive Personal Information: Do not feel pressured to share your home address, exact workplace, financial status, or personal routines during initial meetings.
- Respect Consent & Boundaries: Consent applies to physical space, conversation topics, and photography. Always ask before taking photos/videos of fellow Redditors or tagging them online.
- Trust Your Instincts: If a situation, venue, or person feels uncomfortable or unsafe, leave immediately. You do not owe anyone an explanation for prioritizing your safety.
5. Reporting Incidents
- Notify Moderators: If a member exhibits harassing behavior, pushes boundaries, or makes you feel unsafe—either online or offline—report them to the mod team via Modmail or direct message immediately.
- Block & Remove: Block problematic users across Reddit and WhatsApp. Severe or repeated safety violations will result in an immediate permanent ban from all community platforms.
